I'm going to start watching sub-genre movies, and I figured I'd start with zombies, but I have no idea where to start. What are some must see zombie movies, new and old?

Definitely go see Shaun of the Dead. There hasn't been a movie this funny in the horror genre in nearly two decades.

Night of the Living Dead
Re-Animator
Dead Alive
Cemetery Man
Return of the Living Dead

... decent list, but I'd at least add Dawn of the Dead (hell, the remake ain't bad either). And you might as well finish off the trilogy with Day of the Dead. And 28 Days Later, The Serpent and the Rainbow and the Lucio Fulci classic, Zombie (known as Zombi 2 in the States).

After those flicks, the list of watchable movies gets rather thin.

Night/Dawn/Day of the Dead. Night is ancient, Dawn comic gold, Day's kinda crappy but has it's moments. Then watch Shawn of the Dead :). And check 28 Days Later, even though there aren't really zombies in the movie. I kinda liked the new Dawn of the Dead & Resident Evil too - maybe I just have a soft spot for zombie movies :).

Shaun of the Dead is seriously one of the top three flicks of the year. I haven't had so much fun watching a movie in ages. I saw it opening night to a mild crowd and loved it, went to one of the new theatres it expanded into, that somehow attracted more people (and very excited at that), and loved it even more.

After you see it once, you see all the carefully placed references to other flicks, ranging from Night of the Living Dead to 28 Days Later. It really is great.

If you're going to rent horror flicks for a Halloween party, I recommend getting a copy of Shaun of the Dead (I'm certainly going to try) and you will be the most popular party host ever.

Don't forget the Evil dead trilogy :)

Doesn't count. Yes, even though the zombies in 28 Days Later aren't technically zombies, they pretty much are. Whereas the things in Evil Dead are actually just demons. They're not mindless, they don't crave flesh, they're just evil.

I think Night is the definitive Romero zombie flick. Felt listing the others would be overkill.

But good choice in Serpent and the Rainbow. Fulci's Zombi 2... not so much. Besides the underwater scene, that picture's a piece of shit and completely undeserving of its following.

Dawn of the Dead is widely regarded as the best film in that particular series and they're both so different that I don't think it's overkill at all.

No way. Some films are not cinematic masterpieces, but are fun flicks because of their camp nature, inane dialogue, etc. Zombi 2 definitely falls into that category. It's a lot of fun and I can't imagine someone just flat-out hating it. I remember some IGN review was like, "Fulci doesn't make good movies, but he makes entertaining movies..."

I got to agree. It's no Dawn of the Dead or Dead Alive for that matter, but it's a great flick to share some beers with your buddies and drink to.

So with that in mind I'd enjoy Shaun of the Dead more after I've watched some zombie history, as it were.

A Shining Example
Dawn of the Dead (2004) Director's Cut - but it doesn't come out until Oct 26.

Watch it. It kicks so much ass its not even funny.

Shaun of the Dead was okay. Definitely overrated though. It just wasn't very funny after the first half hour or so. If you want a real funny zombie comedy watch Dead Alive (funniest movie I've ever seen).

that needs to be flipped. im not a real big fan of the subgenre, i prefer the things that lie just on the edge of zombie movies and that's virus/infection movies.. rabid, invasion of the body snatchers, crazies, braindead, 28 days later etc

as for more zombie movies, i'd add let sleeping corpses lie, biozombie (chinese comedy that gets no love, lots of video game references) and don't listen to anyone who rips on fulci, they're fools ;)

OK, let me see what I can come up with here.

Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead - original
Day of the Dead
Zombie
The Dead Next Door (It's an older independant film, but I really enjoyed it)
City of the Living Dead
Shaun of the Dead
Dead Alive
Delemorte Delamore
Re-Animator

-

And I've got to recommend these to anyone who hasn't seen them. They aren't Zombie movies, but they're gory as hell.

Violent Shit
Violent Shit 2
Violent SHit 3
Nikos the Impaler

www.violentshit.de - all about the director and his other projects. Has some other ok movies

Can not wait for this to come out. I loved it in the theaters...

Oh, I don't care what anyone else says, 28 DAYS LATER is one of the best Zombie movies in a long time!

28 days later was fantastic and IMO the true Resident Evil flick (some similarities)

I only see the most petty, battle hardened elitist fucks putting down 28 days.

Okay, here's what I plan to watch:

Re-Animator
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Brain Dead
Versus
28 Days Later
Zombie (2)
Shaun of the Dead

Are there any that you absolutely insist i add to the list, or does that cover the genre decently enough? Or perhaps there's a movie I've put there that's best replaced with something else, or simply forgotten?

Thats a pretty good list, I'd watch Return of the living Dead, just cause I think it's funny, and their are naked boobs.

There's also this really trashy Japanese Zombie-flick called Stacy in which only young schoolgirls worldwide are affected and turn into Zombies. Stylish chainsaws and such become fashion items afterwards. I haven't seen it but it sounded so massively stupid and cheesy it has to be good (flawless logic :p) and someone on GA had a avatar of it a couple of years ago :)

Stacy is freaking terrible. Almost unwatchable.

The absolute best ones are the 3 from Romero, Night, Dawn, Day and Braindead (Dead Alive is the american version, but it`s missing some scenes and gore, so get Braindead version), Cemetary Man (Dellamorte Dellamore), Versus and Fulci`s Zombie 2.
