Reddit apologizes for "Online Witch Hunts" regarding Boston events

It was obvious as hell that they weren't the same person. Some posters blew my mind that night. That overlay gif threw me over the edge.

Same here. Aside from having white skin and dark hair there was little resemblance.

There were people who said things like, "Look at his nose!"

It reminded me of when people on Maury Povich's DNA test episodes point at the picture of the infant and yell, "He/she has your ___!!"

I really didn't see many people making the nose comparisons outside of Ether Snake. I could be wrong, but it was mostly absurd speculation regarding other possible connections.

Edit: There was (I believe) a pretty ridiculous phase morphing photo being circulated.

the sunil tripathi thing was just stupid. didn't look anything like him

the high school track kids, i put more blame on the media for that one

Me too. I was following the reddit threads when I could, and by the time the NYpost thing happened, most everyone had agreed that they weren't suspects because of the shoes. It seems like the NYpost looked at reddit, found the brownist folk that people were looking at, and ran with it.

it wasn't even just the new york post

the day before that, cnn and fox news both claimed to have pictures that the fbi was distributing to law enforcement - without making it clear whether the pictures were of persons of interest or actual suspects in the case

both channels then described the pictures in detail, and it was obvious the pictures they were talking about were pictures of those two kids

i still don't know if the media just made it up, or if the fbi did actually give out their photos to law enforcement

I think that the FBI told them something about someone in a white hat. Since one of those kids did have one, they just ran with it. :/

And while the Sunhil thing was horrible, it seems like the media is now pointing fingers at the internet to cover their own asses. The internet did it! Not US!

I thought most of the people were kidding in the GAF thread as evidence by the "omg Sunhil's uncle in the Youtube video looks like the creepy old guy in the bombing photo"?

This shit is pretty sad. Not to mention I saw a lot of GAFfers posting about how they were sure it was Sunil before the names of the suspects were released.

The cat is out of the bag. We will never be able to go back to a pre cell-phone/photos everywhere age where people post everything in attempts like what Reddit did. It sucks, but the FBI and similar organizations are going to have to take that into account going forward.

edit: Wonder if ironcreed will eat some crow about what the internet will do to hamper an investigation since he was so adamant it wouldn't happen... All it takes is just one person to start this nonsense before it snowballs out of control.

what did he do wrong?

Read the thread.

I think it's pretty generous to even say that CNN did not call them suspects. This is their original breathless report:
SUSAN CANDIOTTI, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: We have learned from a federal law enforcement official who's regularly briefed on the investigation that images of two men -- there are two photographs we're tacking about here -- are being circulated among law enforcement agencies around the country.

And those agents and law enforcement officers are being asked to be on the lookout for these people, because they are possible suspects -- possible, we emphasize -- and of high interest. The reason we're being told that there's a high interest in these people is because of the timing of where they were right near the finish line before the blast went off, and also because of what they have with them, what they are carrying.

In this case, at least one of them is carrying what appears to be a dark-colored backpack. And they have also circulated a memo, so to speak, among the agencies and describes it this way. It says: "The attached photos are being circulated in an attempt to identify the individuals, highlighted therein. Feel free to pass this around to any of your fellow agents elsewhere." We know also that authorities do not yet know the names of these people. So they truly are trying to find them and are calling them possible suspects.

So yeah, they only call them "possible suspects" of "high interest", technically, but the implication is there -- and that is the same thing people trashed the NY Post for (the post also did not say they were suspects, technically). I would like to point out that she claims "[they] are calling them possible suspects" but that is not in the quote she read.

Anyways, CNN would go on to rehash this story with varying degree of alarm and detail throughout the night, but rather than C&P all of them I will skip to the end

DEBORAH FEYERICK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: You know, it's interesting because they've been very carefully guarding, obviously, by looking at what we see there, who they may show us once the cloths come off the easel. They've been very, very careful. You have to keep in mind, Wolf, they've been going through hundreds if not thousands of photographs isolating individuals who seem to stick out who don't belong where they are.

And so, the expectation is that once they do reveal who is under or what is under those easels we'll have a much clearer sense. Yesterday, we were talking about these two young men who were of keen interest. They were circulating all around an image that went viral, one man in a white baseball hat, another in a blue jacket. But they went from sort of being on the top ten to well below that. So, it'll be interesting to see who they unveil when they pull the cloths off those easels

That was 5 minutes before the FBI press conference releasing the photos of the bombers and they were still claiming that the blue jacket duo had been a "top ten" suspect

not sure if old, but a body was found suspected to be that of sunhil tripathi

Police found the body of a man in the Providence River and they think it is 'very possible' that it is missing student Sunil Tripathi who was wrongly accused of being one of the Boston Marathon bombers.

Tripathi, 22, was a Brown University student and has been missing since the middle of March.
Authorities are hoping to reveal the identity of the body today, but police lieutenant Joseph Donnelly told The Boston Globe that 'it's very, very possible' that it is Tripathi.

The body was discovered on Tuesday evening around 6 p.m. in the river near the Wyndham Garden Providence Hotel, but it is not yet known when the person died.
