The email said ”Marvel Studios - Open House Invitation." What that meant, I didn't know. But it's Marvel, so I went, and I'm glad I did, because I got to see concept art, footage, and/or more from every known movie on their schedule, up through Captain Marvel. Yes, Infinity War, too.

Before a (still-embargoed) screening of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, io9 was among several outlets who were lead on a tour of Marvel Studios' new offices on the Disney lot in Burbank. Along the way, we got peeks and glimpses at this year's Spider-Man Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok, next year's Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, and Ant-Man and the Wasp, as well as Captain Marvel, currently without a director and scheduled for March 2019. Here's what we saw.

We stepped into an office with walls lined with concept art from all the upcoming MCU films, but our eyes immediately went to Carol Danvers. There were only three Captain Marvel images up on the wall, but they packed quite a punch. The first two featured Brie Larson in her costume, which appears to draw heavy inspiration from her classic comics suit. Though the design kept Captain Marvel's signature eight-pointed star emblem square on the chest, its look and feel were more akin to Ant Man's suit than Iron Man's. Like a form-fitting armor, her suit is less spandex and more military grade, covering her whole body. Her iconic sash is more of a utility belt, favoring function over form. In the concept art she stands tall, staring off into the distance, looking hopeful but tough.

The third image showed her fighting off a something in a giant metal suit with a helmet; the creature looked almost like the Kree sentries. Between her hands, glowing red energy–a.k.a. Captain Marvel's energy projection and absorption powers. According to screenwriter Nicole Perlman, Carol Danvers' backstory is going to be different than the one we know from the comics, but if this concept art is to believed, the Kree are still going to make an appearance one way or another.

We see bits of two sequences, the first involving King T'challa's correlation at Warrior Falls: his royal bodyguards, the Dora Milaje, rhythmically stomping and chanting aboard a ship. A shirtless Boseman descending a set of stairs into a pool of water and receiving the power of the Black Panther. The footage is beautiful and colorful and musical--unlike anything we've seen in the MCU thus far. The second, potentially more spoiler-y sequence, involves Ulysses Klaue (Andy Serkis from Age of Ultron, upgraded with some sort of prosthetic arm) meeting Everett K. Ross (Martin Freeman from Captain America: Civil War) in a South Korean casino to discuss mixtapes and vibranium.

The footage shifted then to a casino in Korea where Klaw (Andy Serkis) enters with eight men and talks to Everett Ross (Martin Freeman). Ross noted that Klaw’s entourage is so big, he must have a mix-tape coming out, to which Klaw replies, “I do, get him the link.” There will be a big shoot out in this casino featuring both those characters, as well as T’Challa.

Black Panther is going to be amazing.

It's mostly Slayven lol.

He's not entirely wrong, if Captain Marvel were a 1:1 adaptation of the character it wouldn't be a very good movie. There's going to be some major retooling involved that will give the character a new identity similar to how Tony Stark and RDJ have becoming interchangeable since his film debut. So honestly comic fans' opinions of the character don't matter much until we see what direction they're going with her.

There's no character that needs it more than Carol, too. Marvel writers have failed repeatedly to update and modernize her for current readers.

For what it's worth, I think most of us would love a good Captain Marvel film, and really hope it's great.

It's just... if Marvel had come up with an interesting angle for Carol and had a good story around it making her an interesting character, it's odd they've not used it for the last fifteen years of comics and only made a great Ms Marvel book by... having someone else be Ms Marvel.

Exactly. The movie will just be Brie Larson cracking jokes in a cool costume. I bet none of Carol's worst traits will show up in the film. If they get a good director for it, it could be fantastic, regardless of the comics.

Larson herself already admitted the character has a long and complicated history that will mostly be jettisoned in favour of a new approach. I couldn't be happier and I like Carol (before her intense character assassination in CWII).
