not even though, read the report. there are accusations they were working together, its not just being an accidental puppet

No I mean the scandalous thing. Corruption part is part and parcel for someone like Trump. Being outed as a sexual deviant, that's bad in his circles.

CNN posted a response.

It's still shit reporting.

Whatever is contained in that intelligence report won't be easily confirmed nor discredited (if at all). Investigations could take months before shedding any light, and that's assuming that Trump doesn't kill the investigation right away and that CNN was on the money with its story. Publishing that piece was simply reckless. Nobody put the smallest amount of forethought into it.

They basically sabotaged themselves and failed the public in the process. Bannon is probably going to ride this bitch like a T-Rex.

CNN aren't to blame for Buzzfeed. I also agree with most of what they've said, but at the end, that is kind of guilt before innocence. It's the other way about innocence until proven guilty, so yeah, it is up to the journalists and intelligence to prove an allegation, not the victim to disprove it.

You definitely shouldn't if they have something on you. Unfortunately, the more brazen Orange boy acts the more he doubles down on feeling untouchable.

Trump refused to answer a question from the press which is unprecedented and called CNN fake news, without correctly even pointing out what he disagreed with as far as CNNs reporting.

Yeah, the "victim" sort of does have to disprove CNNs allegations if he's going to behave like that.

That's why I said this all could end in a constitutional crisis. That's what happens when something on this level occurs that no one knows or agrees on how to deal with.

That's true.

I really hope something meaningful comes out of this. I'd hate for it to peter out simply because everyone involved is at an impasse. That just lets Trump win by default.

Journalists don't have to prove anything. They are reporting on this in the right way. It's up to officials to prove if there is anything to this.

But if Trump wants to call people out for talking about this. CNN is just saying he has every right to say if anything is false.

The report ultimately matters more than a spat between CNN and Trump. He's acting pissy at them as a big boy covering this story. Objective truth about the claims is what would be damaging, not said Trump/CNN spat.

You can argue investigative journalism is also suppose to aid in proving allegations. Hence why many outlets didn't even think to leak this as they couldn't back it up.

Just watching BBC. Reporter stating he's been told from his sources there's multiple tapes of evidence of this stuff... BBC not pulling punches here by even just mentioning that this report is likely very credible. I honestly expected this to be a throwaway mention on the news then they'd move on. They're giving viewers the news which is nice to see!

This is great.

You mean to tell me the president can simple prevent an investigation from happening? Even if he is suspected of a crime?

They have reliable sources that US intelligence believed the claims in the dossier credible enough that Russia has compromising information on Trump to present to the sitting president and president elect.

They should absolutely report on that, especially given Trump's authoritarian attitude to the press as evidenced today.

Wtf is this even referring to?
It appears to be an article written a few days ago trying to defend Sessions' behavior in how he handled that voting fraud case years ago.

Something that conservatives wouldn't have attempted to do in the 80's but is somehow acceptable now... Just think about that.

It must be telling the truth!

This is completely wrong.

CNN basically reported that intel community presented Trump and Obama with information that could compromise Trump. That's a fact that happened. Bernstein detailed how the memo ended up on Comey's desk too. Buzzfeed however says the 2 page dossier in that intel report included piss showers and other salacious stuff. CNN says Buzzfeed's report is unverified. Trump is trying trying to railroad both by saying CNN is running an inaccurate story.

There is no winning here for Trump at all, unless he manages to conflate the two stories.

Trump doesn't seem to be bound by any conventional rules, so the way I see it it's up to the congress to hold him accountable of anything. Which is to say that we are in terra ignota.

This is completely wrong.

As far as we know the report was unsubstantiated. CNN was probably accurate in their reporting and I'm more than willing to believe that, but their article was still poorly calculated and resulted in the foreseeable escalation initiated by Buzzfeed. Trump will probably succeed at conflating both stories and everybody will be worse off because of that.

The irony is the CNN article has a source at the end saying the intelligence community is waiting to verify this before releasing it to the public. You have to wonder why the source and the media are not doing the same. Either this should have come out when it was first found before the election or it should not come out at all until it's confirmed.

The timing still seems strange with Obama's farewell address and Tillerson's confirmation hearing. I hope the media recognizes the risk if this gets debunked. CNN will have the credibility of the National Enquirer and the media's check on American government is officially over.

But CNN didn't publish the document, only that their sources said the POTUS and PEOTUS were shown the synopsis. That's what they're working on addressing.

The comrade accused me of being a Trump supporter. He was miffed that I criticized the rash of utterly false stories in elite liberal newspapers and the unwillingness of Clinton liberals to introspect about their loss.

Psst, all powerful countries meddle in foreign politics. Why do you think the US taps Angela Merkel's cellphone?

I know being interested in leftist politics almost by definition means seeing everything as equivalent (Republicans and Democrats, liberals and conservatives, capitalism and socialism depending on how far left you are) but it seems like there is enough smoke to be concerned that this specific incoming president's connections to a shitty foreign leader is more significant than the typical spying and influencing most nations do. It seems your assertion is there is no connection and/or the connection is irrelevant.

Putin and Trump says it's fake too. Wow, why didn't we listen to these trustworthy sources who are DEFINITELY NOT intrinsically related to the accused?

Who are these people that keep spamming links to wikileaks and 4chan?

Patriots! Duh.

It's basically over already. Over half the country lives in a news-bubble created by the internet and social media. The internet was simultaneously the best and worst thing to happen to the news.

Unless they have more proof, this is dead in the water.

You folks really need to get the timeline right. CNN is simply reporting what was debriefed to Obama/Trump. Intel community thought it was strong enough to present to them. They will of course verify and corroborate more, including Buzzfeed piss details.

This would be the worst case scenario and I'm worried you're right.

No, he can't stop the investigation. Nixon learned that lesson. If the stuff is fake, then he won't care. If it was all true, it would still be less damaging than stopping an investigation.

A day or two ago I saw a post in a DC thread where essentially they were hoping that if the CU ever rebooted, it'd do so with the bad guys winning and everything burning to the ground, right before the new universe started

All I could think was "so you want to watch world events occur in real time, but in a theater?"
