In normal circumstances people would think that you are the asshole there.
It's a violation of trust, consent, privacy. There's nothing good about it.

Even if it's done with supposedly good intentions it just shows an underlying dishonest, manipulative and actually kind of malicious personality.

Which is why it's so hilarious to see how that kind of thing collides and reacts with the general worldview of ResetEra.

It's not just about who you are and what you've done it's also about how you identify and how you are identified.

So if you are a straight white male you can get banned forever for agreeing with the wrong guy (such as Richard Lewis recently) or saying that you will still buy THQ Nordic games.
I can easily imagine that any straight white dude doing this "violating privacy" thing would probably be accused of doxxing and putting people's lives in danger etc etc. Hysterics would undoubtedly follow for sure.

If a trans person, who is popular on the forum, does the same thing though? Now you gotta factor that in. Now it's just a "whistleblower" who is fighting the good fight and the evil mods just want to keep their private conversations private. How dare those mods have their own thoughts in their own heads! Finally, confirmation of my theory that "Duration Pending" and the time it takes to be finalized IS due to them looking through a users post history with prejudice looking for reason to ban them. Even if all those posts were perfectly acceptable and nobody complained or reported them at the time.

And we already know that in many cases "Multiple past infractions" is often bullshit because you can cross reference with the ban tracker and see maybe that user only had ONE previous ban.

Personally I don't think anyone that clearly wants to be a mod and allows others to champion them as a potential mod should even be considered. They're starved for power and control, and they'll easily allow it to get to their heads. That was the problem with previous GAF mods, they cared more about having control and being "internet celebrities" than they cared about actually maintaining a healthy community.

This whole debacle is pretty much the prelude to Era's downfall when you really think about it.

If things get more draconian, the people that just want to talk about video games likely won't survive for very long. Even the people that managed to avoid social topics will find themselves knee deep in them on the gaming side as "problematic" stuff will be even more at the forefront than before. Either that or mainstream titles will start being banned topics, which will bring about its own wave of dissatisfaction from the people unaffected by these social issues.

On the other hand, if this whole thing is just lip service from the staff, then another similar incident is all but inevitable. A lot of posters are already skeptical that anything will change. Many stopped caring after Ket got unbanned, but a bunch are still going "wait a minute..." seeing as others like Brock are still banned and people are seeing Cerium for who he is like in the socialism thread.

This is a no-win scenario where the options are either remain stagnant (which will cause further resentment to bubble under the surface), or to overcorrect like crazy which will do the same while simultaneously pushing out large swathes of the userbase. It's only a matter of time before another explosion happens, even if it consists of a bunch of lesser explosions.

My NeoGAF user name and avatar have been lifted from one of the lead characters on a science fiction show called The Expanse. Good show, that. One of its core messages is giving every group a voice and learning to coexist in an ever-widening universe. It's the kind of thing that plenty of ResetEra folk claim they're into. But I refuse to believe that. ResetEra has more in common with the totalitarian regimes of that fictional franchise; "get in line, all the way at the back because you don't fit our preferred racial and gender profile; this is our safe space; shut up or be banned."

I think I'm droning on way too much today without joining in the fun parts of this thread, so I will indeed shut up, but I'll leave you with my vision of Hobbes as a moderator because I need a fucking chuckle after all that diatribe:
