Resident Evil 5 review thread

Playing RE4 thru the first time was probably my best gaming experience since I beat Deus Ex for the first time, and DX just happens to be my favorite game ever.

Himumu since this is your first Resident Evil out of the gate don't ruin it with spoilers dude trust me you'll appreicate it more that way.

I seriously can't get over Chris's look though he really looks like the Hulk.

For those saying Resident Evil 2 was the best...eh I'd have to strongly disagree playing the games NOW. Back in the day though when I was 12 the atmosphere that game provided was insane, but now it's a bit hollow...and barren. That kind of atmopshere worked for the mansion / Resident Evil 1...but for 2/3 the city was so barren and dull playing it now. The best thing about those games now are the files :D.

Take it to the RE series playthrough thread so I can yell at you there. :P

So I've been playing with Type D and I'm saying to myself "No way, is Type A, B or C superior in any way or form to Type D." I swtiched to Type A to see what it was and I have to say...Crow is quiet tasty.

Im putting my faith in Capcom (because if ANY company deserves it, Capcom is the one) that the final product will be mostly headache free on the control end of things.

If not, well, I guess we'll always have RE4 :(
It's honestly that much worse to you? I fail to see how that's possible.

I'm pretty sure it's just a demo thing. Before long I was ripping through the axe man like nobody's business, blowing up barrels and uppercutting him with ease. Try B mode again. :\

i reacted the same way to the demo, solo. i said so in the demo thread, and was subsequently grilled for four pages by amirox who insisted that if i couldn't quantify what it was that was different between re4's controls and re5's demo controls, then there must be nothing different, and that i had an ulterior motive.

it was glorious.

You see the problem with RE5 controls is that it is exactly like a tank. Unlike other games where you aim your torso moves along with your arms, RE5 seems to think just moving your arms around is enough which brings extreme frustration when trying to move about and shoot. I look at how Ryan Payton helped simplify MGS controls which were a chore on the PS2 , but now is far more easier and efficient when trying to do something in the game and especially online.

RE5 needed that western guy.

Duck Amuck said:
And those people complaining about the controls weren't interested in the first place.
On the contrary, considering the crazy amount of love RE4 gets on this forum and the fact that RE5 can be played coop (I have a hard-on for coop games since I suck at competitive online) I was really interested. So much so that I created a Japanese account so I could get the RE5 demo zero-hour.

I even downloaded the demo again when it came to North America's XBL in case they tweaked the controls after the Japanese demo.

I want to love this game so much, I like the premise, I like the characters, the location, the concept but I simply can't play it. I'll be avoiding the official release thread because I know I won't be buying the game.

And you're right. Chris IS more slow compared to Leon. You'll get used to it in time.

I wish it was possible to play as Sheva on 1 player mode. It'd be interesting playing as a lefty.
I agree. I've always wanted to play as a lefty in a third-person shooter. It'd be a refreshing change of perspective.

But yeah, Chris is certainly slower than Leon. I've been doing another playthrough in RE4, and it does just have a different "feel" than what I got with the RE5 demo.

I don't like the idea of
Co-Op Mercenaries. I was kinda hoping they would've given you the option to use a single character, but it's seems like it'll be Co-Op only. I'm not always gonna be online (or have someone to play with in person) and having to be stuck with an A.I. partner is disappointing.

I'm actually starting to get annoyed with Co-op in general, to be honest. Doesn't the single player experience mean anything anymore?

Alright, its definitely quite a bit less janky with scheme A, but far from great. I think RE5 is going to require lots of practice and lots of patience on the control side of things.

I don't think I agree with this. It's like saying that a game once considered perfect in 2005 continues to be perfect in 2009, no amount of improvements to the genre can eclipse this perfection, which is rediculous considering the amount of high profile, top tier 'similar' games.

And that's fine, as long as Capcom is fine with expecting to never grow their fanbase outside of the RE4 game fans.
Considering how hard Capcom is working to try and attract western gamers to their titles I think your thoughts are mistaken.

This.

RE tank control was never been a part of my good experience and i don't know why they still try to remain it for the zombie run and stop in front of you for 5 secs game design sake.

Zombies with guns, on turrets and riding motorcycles was enough for me. Fuck this direction.

RE4 had enemies with crossbows, miniguns, using machine gun turrets and rocket launchers. There was even a boss fight with a guy using firearms.

And don't give me this crap about "control issues." Again, if RE 5 is anything like RE 4, this whole thing about "control issues" is invalid, since RE 4 had NO "control issues."

I played and enjoyed RE 4, but playing the demo of RE 5 it took me a long time to get a control scheme going that I was even vaguely comfortable with and even then it wasn't great. Your character still moves very badly and tank-like. It's like they're afraid of actually making movement reasonable. In the end I still felt more like I was steering my character rather than just moving them around. It's a flaw and it's high time they fixed it.

Now, what are the review scores for people who don't have any friends that like shooters and thus won't be able to actually play it co-op? I wasn't terribly impressed with the AI in the demo (real-time inventory really doesn't work when you need to pull it up, swap tabs and then try to give your partner more ammunition because she's run out and you're beset on all sides by a never-ending horde) and I'm not likely to play with just some random jack-ass online.

Um... yeah. That's exactly what RE4 controlled like. They aren't called tank controls for no reason.

I personally did need some adjustment time... but I think it's mainly because of the dual shock controller... I don't know what it is about it, but aiming just feels really shitty. I actually got a Wii over the weekend and I loaded up RE4 and instantly I was kicking ass without having any adjustment period, the GC controller just feels a whole lot better.

Sign me up to the 'I think RE 5 controls like fairly shit' club.
I really expected to love the demo.

Did you guys read the OXM UK review?
They said they found it fairly disappointing and said in the end you have a co-op 3rd person shooter/horror against better competition in all of those categories.
Deadspace is scarier, Gears 2 is a superior 3rd person shooter and Left 4 Dead has better co-op.

It was fairly bitchy for OXM, they usually suck up everyone's ass.

Duck Amuck said:
Is it confirmed that
Mercs is co-op only?

Well not exactly. Just from the way that they said
you unlock Mercs Co-Op and how based on other previews/impressions saying you're partnered up for most of the game.

It makes me a little worried. Though we'll have to wait and see.

You versus amirox? I totally have to see this.

Regarding the first spoiler:
I hope the Majini can shoot and walk at the same time just to piss people the fuck off.

I bet you the official thread will devolve into THE CONTROL SUCK argument we've been having for weeks now.
yep we need a separate thread for control bitching.I'm sick of the same group of people spewing the same arguement up repeatedly.

There's apparently caves full of Kijuju dressed as if they are in tribe warrior gear and not in modern clothes! Thus, the game stipulates that all Africans are savages!!! RACISM!!!
Well I can't make a fair call if that's racist or not as I'm not black or African, but that's going to piss some people off when they find out about it or just see footage of it, on top of the main game being full of black enemies. Again, I'm not black so I can only tell how I feel about it and it's kind of weird seeing a game with mostly black enemies. The majority of games I've played have been 90% white enemies or they have non-human foes. I'm not saying the game can't have black or African enemies either. It's just a change for me and I'm sure it will look very weird to people who don't play games. And sort of unrelated, but I think Medal of Honor:Airborne is the first time I've ever shot up Italians in a game. Finally, I got to shoot up people in a WW2 game who I vaguely resemble and share some ancestry with. :lol Now I just need a game with Dutch and Irish enemies and I'll have my bases covered. But seriously, it is good when games branch out and have all kinds of different people in them. I just hope RE5 isn't some cheapshot to a lot of people.

Episode 4 of the viral campaign, "Bridge", has been unlocked on the Kijuju website.

Watch it here.

The password is "temple" if you're asked for it.

These viral videos are actually really cool, it's great that Capcom have been given the budget to do it.

I was hyped for this game but I'm getting mixed feelings now, it just doesn't feel like there's any compelling reason why (in the single-player front) I should purchase this and if it's even taken RE4 to a new level.

Same.

With about a month to go, I am not hyped at all, especially after the demo.

and coincidentally, that's when RE4 stopped being really amazing and became simply *good*

Fuck that noice. Krauser was amazing and without decent projectiles the enemies would have been a cake. The balanacing was perfect when in the beginning you had problems with the basic pitchfork guys and the more you learned to exploit their weaknesses the more deadlier they became. Reapers were badass and seeing a monk with the RPG was just so hilariously exciting :lol

I didn't like the Minigun dude because they were relatively easy to deal with. Chainsaw guys ftw.

It's probably too much to ask Capcom to simultaneously develop RE/Zombie game titles have a) old-school creepy, slow rotting zombies + freaky BOWs in creepy/trashed environment or b) new-school, infected, tool-toting villagers in poor, isolated rural areas. I like both :/.

RE5's controls didn't bother me that much. Not exactly the most intuitive, but I'll manage I guess. I'm a sucker for co-op so I'll adapt. Haven't messed around with the different types really yet.

With old-school and new-school RE content and a new Dead Rising, my zombie trifecta would be complete.

Bravo! Too bad I canceled my preorder, so I'll never experience it.

seriously guys, unlockable modes aren't spoilers, not unless they give away something major about the plot (like say, a hypothetical unlockable side quest where you play as Jill would be confirmation that she isn't dead as the trailer tells us) but Mercs Co-op isn't a spoiler at all.

it's a fucking selling point.
