Resident Evil HD Remaster |OT| Rediscover the evil.

I hope reviewers take Capcom to task for falsely labeling this game a "remaster". I doubt it though.

In what way is it not? Serious question; I haven't really been following it, but I thought the resolution had been improved, the detail of the characters, frame rate, etc?

By far the dumbest exchange, perhaps even across all mediums, is when Barry brandishes a firearm, and Jill in typical Jill fashion has no idea what it is. Barry doesn't clarify to the poor girl in the conversation what kind of gun it is, but rather "it's a weapon." But then, the real nugget of the conversation is what follows: "it's really powerful-- especially against living things." So, you're telling me that this random gun-shaped object that you just pulled out of your ass is a gun, and that it was designed to be effective against living things? "Jill, this is a rice cooker. It's really effective, especially at cooking rice." I can't believe that Barry had to explain, although in what could be the dumbest way imaginable, what a gun is to a cop.

Special Tactics and Rescue Service indeed.

I might be wrong, but didn't Barry gave her Acid Rounds during that cut-scene?

Not to mention, a weapon powerful "especially against living things" in a house full of zombies (and zombie dogs) isn't really something to brag about.

EDIT: Yeah, I remembered it right! :D

It's not even a weapon. Barry gives Jill acid rounds for the grenade launcher during that scene.

You mean the most brilliant exchange across all mediums.

Yeah, it was acid rounds. That's why I couldn't remember exactly what it was. I thought he gave her a new gun. It's still just as dumb.

You really have to see this game in motion on your TV to really appreciate it. It's a wonderful looking game. I am stoked to replay it (for the 100th time probably)

Much as I'd love a mod to put some of the original voice acting in it would be tough as many of the scenes are pretty different or just missing in one version or the other. For example in Remake there is no Barry walking into the Snake room.

*walks past a dead giant snake rotting before his eyes*
"Jill have you found anything interesting?"

I just remembered one. I'm sorry, I can't stop posting these quotes. They're too good.

"What happened to Wesker?"

"He is sleeping with the ultimate failure! :D"

I mean, what the fuck. They're supposed to be shocked with that plot twist.

It's such a shame they ditched the live action intro. That's the GOAT!

Hahahahahaha. The dialogue was epic in the original game. It is truly a masterpiece.

The best bit is if you save Jill without having visited her cell first.

Jill: "Wesker is here. He's..."

Chris: "Oh, I know, anyway, let's go."

I forget, what is the pre-order bonus?
Unsure of other platforms, but PC/Steam receives the soundtrack and a Mansion Guide PDF which I do not recognize.

RE4's Steam preorder materials (artbook, double disc soundtrack) have yet to appear again so I'd jump the gun if you're at all interested in these extras- in all likelihood they won't be offered at a later time.

Unless of course they figure out you can actually sell those as DLC on Steam and generate extra revenue but heeeeeey let's not get too far ahead of ourselves now.

I guess upgrading all textures, changing engine, replacing a lot of background elements with real-time rendered elements, adding shading, improving lighting, adding new controls, adding support for wide screen, adding free reload, localizing the game, adding new costumes, adding support for multiple resolutions (PC), adding support for higher framerates (PC), and adding customizable controls (PC) isn't good enough to call it a remaster?

No, it's not. The master is the original files, in this case the 3D assets used to create the renders of the room. All these are are up-ressed versions of the GC's background pictures. People duplicated the "enhancements" by applying a few filters in photoshop in the announcement thread and detailed how it can actually make it look worse in some cases.

Also you are hugely embellishing the work done on this game. I've already explained how the backgrounds are just cheap tweaks. The wide-screen isn't an upgrade, it's a failure. The last-gen backgrounds are stuck in 4:3 format. To make them wide-screen they would have to re-render them (hence why it's needed for a remaster). Instead they've been forced to crop them and use the pan camera technique, except because it's zoomed in it screws up the POV used for the original background. Controls, localization, porting in RE5's costumes and models and all that other crap is nothing when you have the source code.

I really hope they accidentally release the game early so that I can play it today like what happened with the evil within, that would be a dream

How exactly was the original dialogue as bad as it was?

Even the average man in the street speaking in a monotone, could of recorded better VO.

Does anyone know if we're getting the PS4 theme too? I got the PS3 theme (which sucks) but nothing for PS4.

Have you ever watched a c-teir horror movie and listened to the dialog? Intentionally campy. Or at least, someone who genuinely liked c-tier horror wanted Resi's dialog in that style.

Barry Burton: Jill *chuckles*, don't scare me.
Jill Valentine: That's what i was going to say. Aren't you supposed to be going over the first floor Barry?
Barry Burton: Yeah, your right, but just take a look at this! It's Forest! Oh my god!
Jill Valentine: It's awful!
Barry Burton: I'm going to find out what caused Forest's death. It looks like he was killed by a crow or something. Can you look around the first floor Jill?
Jill Valentine: Okay
Barry Burton: Hey Jill, this must have been Forest's. You don't have a weapon, take this with you... I can't believe...
----
Barry Burton: WHOOOOAAAAAA! This hall is DANGEROUS!
----
Wesker: Don’t be a hard dog to keep under the porch, Barry.
----
Barry Burton: Is that you Jill?
Jill Valentine: What's going on? How come you look so scared?
Barry Burton: Look at this... What do you think of it?
Jill Valentine: I've been thinking something's wrong with this house!
Barry Burton: Right..
Jill Valentine: Hey! What is this!? There's a page missing!
Barry Burton: Yeah, i thought about that too. Perhaps that was the most important part. I think i'll stay and look around more.
----
Barry Burton: Jill, have you found anything interesting?
Jill Valentine: Yes, but i can't see very well.
Barry Burton: How about going down to check by yourself. I have a rope here.
Jill Valentine: Oh do you. Well then i'll try to go down using the rope.
Barry Burton: Wait..
(Jill climbs down into the hole and Barry drops the rope down with her.)
Jill Valentine: Hey, what's going on!
Barry Burton: Now i've done it! Sorry Jill, wait, i'll go and get another rope!
Jill Valentine: Barry! Barry!!
(Barry returns with another rope)
Barry Burton: Hey, are you there Jill? Grab the rope! I'm sorry Jill..
Jill Valentine: I didn't know THAT way going to happen.
Barry Burton: Sorry.. I was really careless...
Jill Valentine: Are you okay Barry? Maybe your getting tired..
Barry Burton: No i'm alright, don't worry. Jill, i found something.
Jill Valentine: Thank you, i'll take this then.
---
Jill Valentine: Could a creature like this really be the ultimate biological weapon?
Barry Burton: Really, Wesker is a crazy man.
Jill Valentine: Tyrant is not completely developed.
Barry Burton: But we can't let it live. That must be the computer for monitoring this creature.
(Barry presses a few wrong keys on the computer and lets the monster out)
Barry Burton: Damn you!
(Tyrant knocks Barry out)
Jill Valentine: Barry! I can't control what it does!
(Jill kills tyrant and check on Barry)
Jill Valentine: Barry! You're alive!
Barry Burton: Ugh.. I'm really embarrassed, i was clumsy.
Jill Valentine: Lets get going.
----
Jill Valentine: Richard! What happened?
Richard Aiken: Oh Jill! This house is dangerous! There are terrible demons! Ouch!
Jill Valentine: Your wounded, what kind of demon attacked you?
Richard Aiken: It was a huge snake, and also poisonous. Ugh....
Jill Valentine: Poisonous? Oh no, Richard hold on.
Richard Aiken: There is serum. Oh no, i should have brought some with me.
Jill Valentine: No problem, i'll go and get it.
Richard Aiken: Thanks...
(Jill returns from getting the serum)
Jill Valentine: Here's the serum, Richard hold on, i'll give you a shot now.
Richard Aiken: Jill, here's my radio, you should keep it.. I'm....
Jill Valentine: No, Richard!
Richard Aiken: Jill, be careful... Ugh......

Greatness.

Re1 seemed less intentional and more like the developers didnt have a good grasp on the english language and also thought the players were too stupid to have basic thought logic.

Still like the camera angles in these style of games. Can't believe that type of thing died.

It's sad isn't it? I'd kill for developers to make games like this again.

Some BSAA Chris gameplay
Does anyone else actually like the new panning camera like i do?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-ZEnMwHW9Q

I swear I was trying to find some footage earlier with someone playing with proper controls, the last dozen I clicked on were all playing with the new analog movement.

The panning looks good but I wanna try it for myself to decide.

Forgot where I read it but Mikami and crew asked the VO's to say their lines slowly so they could understand them better which unintentionally made it super campy sounding. Not sure if that's true but I remember reading that awhile back.

Wesker: Don’t be a hard dog to keep under the porch, Barry.

Oh, I've never heard that one, when does he say that?

There's another great Wesker line that I've only heard recently. "You have to excuse me Chris, but I'm not used to escorting men", when he forces Chris into the Tyrant lab at gunpoint if you let Rbecca die.

Re1 seemed less intentional and more like the developers didnt have a good grasp on the english language and also thought the players were too stupid to have basic thought logic.

There's an old translated pre-RE2 interview with Mikami where he says as much...he oversaw the VO but didn't have a grasp on english to notice how bad it sounded, also, he insisted that the actors spoke really slow and clearly for the american release as it wouldn't have subtitles. He said that after people pointed it out he couldn't unhear how weird it was. I'll see if I can find that interview when I'm not at work.

It's in the REmake when
Jill is listening to Wesker and Barry behind the door.

I reviewed Resident Evil HD for GameSided. I gave it 8.5/10.

GameSided said:
Resident Evil HD is the definitive edition of one of the series’ greatest works. The brilliant level design, lighting engine, scare tactics and mood-altering score nails the deeply atmospheric vibe as great as we’ve ever seen. It’s the same Resident Evil you know and love; it’s just got an extra coat of paint added on top. Even with some of the blemishes littered around the upscaled full HD output, I’d heavily recommend picking this up to anyone looking for a true survival horror experience.

Jim Sterling also put up his review, too.

What about the crypt which is now fully real-time rendered? Or every outdoor area which has now been overhauled? Or the other areas which looks much improved? You're quick to say everything has been upscaled with nothing else done, but that's not the case. If your standard is "everything re-rendered, or it's not good enough," then yeah, I guess nothing they've done will impress you.

And I'd personally count every texture being improved, new engine, higher framerate, better lighting, and new shading as something more than "all that other crap."

So how moddable do we expect this game to be on PC?

The game should be pretty moddable. The game is using MT Framework and there's a bunch of tools for modding games with that engine. That said, don't expect mods on the scale of something which has an SDK available, but I expect a bunch of graphics mods, and I'm hoping people will figure out how to modify the enemy and item placements.

The game is a remaster, anything more would be a remake (which this game was back when it launched).

If you think all the game's doing is upscaling GC environment with a sharpen filter then you are mistaken because they have redrawn some areas from scratch, and in some cases they have actually redone entire environment in 3D for some areas, while in few cases they redo parts of the area. The lighting model is also improved a lot over the original and they have ported the game over to MT Frameworks. There hasn't been a single remaster launched till date (not a remake) with this much work put in, this is necessary due to the nature of the way the game was rendered.

You are completely underestimating the amount of work Capcom has put in to this remaster, read through the digitalfoundry article to see how much work was done in the game digitalfoundry article.
