I can boot the game but when it asks me to update Windows Live, I'm unable to install it. It says "The Installer has insufficient privileges to modify this file: C:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\xlive\sqmapi.dll."

I have 4 hours trying to figure out what the problem is but nothing is working. i have windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit. Without updating Gfwl I won't be able to save the game

I think all you have to do is download the GfWL client from Microsoft's website instead of trying to install the one that comes with the game. It worked for me and I'm on Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit as well.

I liked RE5 as a game, if not as a Resident Evil one.

It's probably my most re-played game of last gen. I must have played through it about 7 or 8 times across various co-op runs and with the upgraded weapons etc. I'd play it again now, absolutely.

I feel like RE5's only real crime is that it's too much like RE4 without being anywhere near as unique or interesting. Mechanically it plays and controls just as well, and I feel even makes some improvements with the replayability and upgrade paths etc.

Why does everyone on gaf seem to hate RE5 so much? :( I honestly think it's just as good as RE4. Sheva is kinda useless as an AI partner, but as long as you take away her weapons, she can't really fuck things up lol

I haven't played it in a couple years, but I played RE5 sooo much because I had so much fun with it. The campaign, mercenaries, and the DLC were all so good. I even played with random people online for the campaign and still had a good time. It's not old school RE, but I still think it managed to perfectly provide a great sense of tension and fear during combat because of how threatening the enemies are, and while ammo is not as limited as a RE1-3 type game, it's certainly kinda limited enough where you want to aim carefully, and not waste bullets like any old action game.

I just don't understand why so many love RE4, and hate RE5. It felt like a good sequel to it. I prefer the RE4 style controls, so I always played RE5 like that, with one analog. Feels more like Resident Evil to me when you play it like that. I also think it's probably one of the most enjoyable in terms of characterization and story. Chris, Sheva and Jill are all portrayed great, with well done cutscenes and dialogue.

That's just my opinion anyway, I just don't like being a minority :(

You, I like you.

Code Veronica was an excellent game, but mercilessly difficult.

I like you more.

What's the best console for Resident Evil these days?

PS3? You can play 1 (including Remaster) right through to 6 on PS3, right? As well as Code Veronica, Umbrella Chronicles, Darkside Chronicles and Revelations? In all liklihood Zero will come to PS3 as well even though I'll play it on PS4.

I'm in such a Resi mood at the moment. Feel like re-playing the main series, and I owe Code Veronica a second shot as I never finished that. Not played the Chronicles games either. I might try and pick up a cheap PS3.

I agree with you. Especially about the controls. Switched immediatly to RE4 tank controls because the normal setting felt like total crap. Yes it's worse than RE4 ... but is it a bad game? No. But I think a lot of people actually like it. We need to focus our hate on 6 and Code Veronica
What the hell is people's beef with Code Veronica? Granted, it was my first Resident Evil game and one of my first PS2 titles, so I do have exceptional nostalgic feelings for that game. But I definitely don't see why it would warrant any hate from fans of the series.

I feel like Sheva's AI gets a bad rap. It's not perfect, but it is probably the best AI Partner that has a health bar. Even games today give the player AI partners but they have infinite health and sometimes don't even interact with the enemy (see Last of US, Bioshock infinite, RE6.) She is still vulnerable like the player, but it doesn't feel like she is an escort mission unless you play on the higher difficulty. Almost every other RE game had people the player met up with but then they'd wander off.

Nothing in that game really sticks out as bad other than maybe the mirror puzzles.

PS3 has every RE except Mercenaries 3D, Gaiden and Zero right now. If you have a BC PS3, then that includes the Outbreaks, Survivor and Dead Aim!

Yeah PS3 is the way to go, just grab the RE6 anthology for really cheap these days and you'll have all the mainline RE games in one package.

I don't really like 5 I found it pretty bland and forgettable, but I like 6 so far from what I've played with Dusk Golem so I feel that one is treated unfairly.
Although those reasons are more in tune with what I like about some other series not Resident Evil. (RE2 and REmake are my favorite.)

RE5 is pretty solid and fun, especially in co-op. I don't really have much of problem with Sheva if you give her the right weapons. I think the biggest flaw is it's that almost every setpiece and boss feels like an inferior retread of RE4.

I tried but it didn't work. The latest gfwl doesnt wanna install. In the setup log it shows 76% completion and then thats when the message I posted above shows up

That's one hell of a deal.

I recall that never made it to the UK though. Then again, my main PSN account is North American so maybe I should just import it.

They have that entire collection on EU PSN I believe. Resident Evil 6 might be missing (and nothing of value was lost), but you get all the other resident evil games for like 69,99E if I'm correct. Just search for Resident Evil Collection on the store.

It is also weird that people complain about tank controls in re1-cv but then RE4 uses tank controls and its like the bomb for some reason. I mean, you literally cannot strafe in the game.

I still like RE4... but it is far from being a top tier game imho. It does a lot of things worse than even mediocre games get right consistently.
Yeah, re 4 has the same controls as the old games.
I sometimes thing people have problems when your character is facing the screen and they have to push right to make the character go left.

EDIT: HOLY SHIT I FEEL STUPID. You can simply create an offline profile and everything seems to work. The game created a save file for me and all the game content is available to access on the display menu. I don't need to play online so this is good news. Learned my lesson with Gfwl though and still hope this game comes to Steamworks ASAP

Thanks for the help and sorry for derailing the thread

Good deal. But Code Veronica is definitely part of the RE mainline.
It may have no number but its story is more relevant than RE"3" which is just an RE2 sidestory.

Holy crap, I didn't know that "pausing" the game at the option menu had no effect on freezing its progress. I left two zombies dead in the right wing and "paused" the game to take a shower and make something to eat. Sure enough, while tracking back towards that save room on the 1st floor of that wing, both of those bastards came back as crimson heads and tore my ass a new one..lol.

I only had a pistol and no herbs or a first aid spray in my inventory when fending them off, so after disposing them, Jill was limping to the save room at a danger status..lol. Had I died, I would of lost about 30 mins of unlocking various rooms of the mansion.

From now on I'm not gonna be so stingy with my ink ribbons...haha.

Love this game!

BIO3 was originally a sidestory but it is nothing like one now. Apart from taking place in the same city, it's actually a lot more relevant to the series than BIO2 technically is, since a lot of what BIO2 set up (G-Virus) never actually got used.

Finished my first Jill playthrough. Played on Very Easy to see how fast I could make it, didn't die once, final time was 3h 56m. Not bad for a first try.

I could probably do less than three hours next time If I don't save anyone, but I don't think I'm gonna replay it any soon.

I'm still not sure if zombies come back as crimson heads after a certain amount of time or if it's triggered by an event in the story. x_x

RE3 more relevant than RE2? That's a bold claim. It's been a long time since I played RE3 but what of its events have an impact on the main storyline (besides Jill not dying)?

Raccoon City's destruction and it's consequences for Umbrella and the series' universe government.

Maybe Jill being infected and developing an immunity to viruses?

Well, we now have Sherry with her healing abilities in RE6.
And there was Curtis in Degeneration.

And that's it.

The destruction of Raccoon City and everything that happens afterwards (mainly Umbrella's fall).

I don't recall this. She simply got infected by NE-T-Virus and Carlos cures that. She could still succumb to the G-virus.

Bio5's "hair immunity" thing not withstanding.

Anyway, someone asked about the unused costumes so here's some screenshots:

I could swear, I've seen that red Rebecca outfit before...
they color changed her Basketball photo in Bio2's outfit color from green to red
.

I'd love to see Jill 04/05 make it into a game one-day. And Jill 02 basically became the "Battlesuit" of Bio5.

I think RE5 is about as good as RE4, but I think RE4 is incredibly overrated. Even the controls in RE4 aren't good enough. And I've read many people claim it is like the best game of all time... I just find it hard to believe that people feel that highly about the game and I am a long time fan of the RE series.

It is also weird that people complain about tank controls in re1-cv but then RE4 uses tank controls and its like the bomb for some reason. I mean, you literally cannot strafe in the game.

You don't need to strafe. The controls and camera are a perfect match for the enemies you encounter. But there's a dozen RE4 threads on GAF where you can read why people like it so much.

Weren't antibodies found in Jill's body used by Wesker to develop Uroboros?

She had the red costume in RE1 Director's Cut.

I would burn them all just to be safe..lol. The trouble with blind playthrough is that you don't know which rooms throughout mansion will trigger a cutscene when a character enter it.

But yes, either or, from what you stated, will cause a downed zombie to turn into a crimson head. I believe that easier difficulties give you a little more time as to when you're still able to burn the bodies.

I wouldn't recommend this route, the only way you'll get Anthology for a reasonable price is used, and every game but RE6 is a download code. Even buying new, the codes are probably expired by now.

Not from what I remember but Bio5's story is so hastily written
EXIT. STAGE RIGHT. WESKER. ENTER. STAGE LEFT. WESKERS SON IN Biohazard 6!
that it's completely possible.

...Looking around the antibodies/cure for NE-T is under the T-virus line. AFAIK this means Jill could still be infected by G-virus but T-Veronica wouldn't harm her(? IIRC it's part of the T-virus line) and whatever new virus/plague (Plagas) the series introduces could still possibly infect Jill unless they hastily write in "NO. REALLY. SHE'S IMMUNE TO EVERYTHING!"

Raccoon City's destruction is pretty much the cornerstone event of the entire series. Not to mention it's also the first game to explicitly implicate the American government's involvement. The series story "Bible" was written for BIO3, making it the foundation of every subsequent game (besides CV).

I don't recall this. She simply got infected by NE-T-Virus and Carlos cures that. She could still succumb to the G-virus.

The NE-T Virus does not exist, it was made-up by the translator. The virus she is infected with is the mass-produced t-Virus, strengthened by the chemical composition secreted by the Nemesis parasite. The strengthened aspect is the only reason Wesker uses her antibody, as he could've just used any number of antibodies for the regular t-Virus.

Whether Jill would succumb to another virus is unknown. She has antibodies for the strengthened t-Virus and the t-Abyss Virus which might provide some resistance, but since those two viruses are dramatically different from the G-Virus on a genetic level, it's doubtful she's immune.

I really forgot that happened in RE3, not RE2. That definitely changes my rating of its importance. Looking forward to replaying both.

Granted, BIO3's background story has much more impact than the main events because the game's main focus was the "last escape" angle, but even on that level it's pretty important. Derek Simmons and Adam Benford were BIO3 epilogue characters and the story of "Super Sherry" was first proposed by BIO3's writer.

So I'm just finishing the second part mansion. I have all the key items and am ready to move on to the altar room. Should I backtrack to the courtyard now to get the other MO disk? Or will I need to go back in that direction any way? Also, I dun goofed and didn't realize there was a more powerful shotgun in the shark tank if you save Richard. Is it worth it for me to go back and snatch it up?

Yeah, I got the one you mentioned, but
aren't there three? Including one behind the waterfall in the courtyard? Or am I misremembering?

If your low on ammo - it's fully loaded with 10 shells.

I have about 12 shells left, so I think it's worth my time. Thanks for that. Dem Hunters tho. Sometimes they go down in 3 shots, sometimes 6.
