Resident Evil Nostalgia Thread

Chris in RE5 doesn't really feel like Chris from previous games, but that's probably just because he's kind of a bland character. That said, sort of like Leon, I feel that RE5 was a departure from the character's origin because of the events occurring between games. Chris is hardened after going through so much, and his bulkiness kind of reflects that, too.

Considering that the RE games take place years apart, while I have attachment to characters I also find it easy to understand when they don't seem exactly the same from one game to another. And besides, in the case of RE4 in particular I'm happy with how Leon turned out; it was good for him to lose the rookie cop persona.

Though Chris in RE5/Rev looks very different from the original RE, the character actually seems very much the same to me. I think the problem with his character in RE5 is simply that his physical change suggests a major change of attitude/lifestyle, which we simply don't see. It's implied and mentioned in passing here and there, but from one game to the next, there's very little to go on. But it still works story-wise because, well, walking dead can make all sorts of shit change in a New York minute.

A few years ago I could speed run Resident Evil 2 in about an hour in a half, 15 or so minutes over the current world record. I may actually keep trying this since it is one of my favorite games.

I don't remember much of RE3, so I may actually play through that again.

Which scenario? The A games can be finished in under half an hour. I know I've done Leon's A game in under 27 minutes. Claire's B game is longer than Leon's B but I'm not sure if it should take 45 minutes. I should probably speed run it again to be sure.

My best run was the REmake in under 46 minutes.

Never did speed runs for RE1 but my friend could finish it at around 44. I think someone finished the DS version around 38 minutes.

46 minutes?!

WHAT?! That's absurd.

I remember completing Leon A in 35 minutes. Shit was ill.

Not sure which version since I have RE2 on just about every platform.

Funny thing about the REmake is you can do it that fast by essentially doing a knife run with Chris. Use the hand grenade to take out Trevor and keep just enough ammo for the Snake 2nd fight, Plant, the spider, and the second Tyrant fight(for some reason his first form goes down super quick with the knife)

Smart use of hand grenades, juking, and knife dodges goes a long way.

You can do RE1 way under 30min. It's lot easier for me then RE2 as with my shitty memory RE1 is easier to remember and doesn't have B scenario to confuse you.

I must say I hate the added enemy and location in Remake. They look like something from RE4. Imo very unfitting to RE1 vibe so I actually place it lower then the original.

As opposed to ME1 being 360-exclusive. Because for a long while it was. And really, are exclusives an example of publishers "screwing" gamers?

Yeah if they don't already own the system it's going exclusive to; do you like it when you have to drop another $200 to play one game? I bought a 3ds just for revelations and I dream about playing it on a regular sized television. Am I a fanboy?

Finishing RE1 and RE2 A under 30 minutes???

Finishing REmake in 46 MINUTES!!!!!

..........

How.. just, how?

But....

The Doors loading alone time takes 3-5 sec each one :\

OMG I'M SO SHOCKED :O

Edit: What about all the puzzles solving!?

I think its crazy, even with the infinite magnum after multiple playthroughs takes me some time.

Claire A

I've never seen these runs on Playstation and Twin Galaxies still has Claire A on Playstation at like an hour and something. kunonabi, do you have a video of these runs that are under an hour or whatever?

I don't have any capture equipment so that is a big nope on that. I could take pictures of an ending screen if you want. It might take me awhile though to do the RE2 stuff. The 27 minute run has to be pretty much perfect to get it that quick. Claire's games are longer than Leon's but it still shouldn't take that long.

The REmake would be much quicker and easier to do. I actually found it online originally and then just worked on it until I matched it.

Oddly enough I can't speed run RE3 to save my life. It's my favorite game in the series but it takes me forever to get through it. RE3 is probably my favorite to do knife runs on though.

Most speed runs for RE online are really slow.

You mean Lisa Trevor and the cabin area?

I can't agree there. Those were just a couple of the many things that improved REmake over the original, in my opinion. Lisa especially was like a nice injection of pure horror.

RE1 definitely has a different feel from REmake as well as the entire series, and this works in its favor in a way. At the same time, I played it both before and after I finished REmake and it just ended up seeming like a much simpler experience. Not to mention shorter and easier.

REmake was made in the first place because the Gamecube's hardware allowed Mikami to express his true vision. And, honestly, I think the game does exactly that, it takes the already good concept of the first game and really cranks up the atmosphere and tension, truly fulfilling Resident Evil's role in the survival/horror genre.

To each his own, of course. RE1 does have aspects that can be appreciated. I miss the ugly green wallpaper!

The problem with Lisa is she isn't a threat at all. You can use the stepping animation to avoid her in the cabin, you can avoid her completely in the catacombs, and you can just push the stones in the coffin room. She is a complete non-factor.

I never really considered Lisa an enemy, to be honest. Sure, she was always trying to kill you but for those reasons you listed she was more of an obstacle. She was mainly there to add to the already terrifying atmosphere of the game, and she does a damn good job of that. Anytime I hear her moan in the distance I immediately tense up.

I actually just finished REmake this morning and started up RE2. So good.

When you hear her enter in the caverns, goddamn...
I also recently replayed REmake. So good.

This REmake talk is putting a tear in my eyes, I was a PS2 owner at the time and i didnt have a chance to play this game due to Capcom's backstabing (for me at least),,, i played RE1, RE1DC, RE2, RE3 Last escape (jpn), RE3 Nemesis (us) , Code Veronica X, RE4, RE5,,, and i finished them multiple times, but it seems that i missed the best one of them,, DAMN you CAPCOM,,, bring it in HD already even if the backgrounds look like shit.

Shouldn't be too hard to get your hands on someones Wii and a cheap copy of the game.

If Silent Hill 3 was possible on PS2, then REmake with its nearly static backgrounds would certainly have been possible as well. Let alone on Xbox. The GC hardware had nothing to do with Mikami jumping ship, it was all because of Nintendo's moneyhatting.

Yeah, it's still like an open wound, which immediately starts to itch when it's mentioned. Even if they decided to release a HD REmake, it still wouldn't be the same as experiencing it back in the day. That being said, I'd definitely want to play it at some point, but I sure as hell don't want to buy another system just for it.

I wonder...

REmake was released 10 years ago at the beginning of last generation life cycle, and till this day it's looks AMAZING:

resident-evil-remake.jpg

So... how would the game look like if it was made NOW at the end cycle of THIS GENERATION with the pre-rendered backgrounds?

Can you IMAGINE O_o" !!

Just buy a Wii, so you can also play RE4 with the best controls and good graphics, RE0, REmake, Darkside Chronicles and Umbrella Chronicles.

If they'd give the REmake treatment to RE1 (yes again), 2 and 3, on the PS3/360, still using the super high quality pre-rendered background with very detailed character models and effects....well I'd probably dir from a heart attack of joy.

It's wishful wishful thinking, obviously

Just played through REmake not too long ago, and it is still fantastic. I really miss the atmosphere of the classic games. Haven't picked up Revelations yet, but from the demo it seems to touch on some of the series' roots.

WTH how can anyone hate the new REmake areas. The outdoors and cabin were creepy as fuck.

The only stupid thing in REmake is how they handle Barry's betrayal with Jill. He pulls a gun on you, you let him help you with Lisa. Then, after the fight Jill totally forgets about him pulling the gun on her. WHAT.

The problem with Lisa is she isn't a threat at all. You can use the stepping animation to avoid her in the cabin, you can avoid her completely in the catacombs, and you can just push the stones in the coffin room. She is a complete non-factor.

Not for a new player who never heard of her. I'm sure a hypothetical noob wasted all their ammo on her before becoming wise to her invulnerability.

Well, the game definitely wouldn't have looked as good on the PS2, though the difference wouldn't have been as bad as the one between the PS2 and GC versions of RE4.

That said, I was merely just talking about the generational leap in hardware. The jump to the PS2/GC/Xbox generation allowed Mikami's vision to be fulfilled. I mentioned the GC just because that's the system that the REmake happened to be released on.

As for those who never got to play REmake because of the exclusivity agreement, that's tough luck. I was a Gamecube gamer in 2002 and it was definitely nice to be on the winning side of the whole Resident Evil thing, not just because I was an RE fan but because back then I was in middle school and would always get shit from my PS2-owning friends about how the GC sucks. It was nice to have a truly awesome game for my system that others couldn't play.

Of course, nowadays, that sort of thing is just silly and bitter "console wars" bullshit. The lack of REmake for Sony players is definitely and injustice. But honestly, now you can get a Gamecube for nearly nothing, and a Wii for pretty cheap. Hell, Gamecubes were $99 NEW towards the end of the system's life cycle. And REmake and Zero still look decent, even on HD screens (as long as you play the game in 4:3), so they're worth checking out even for people who are used to HD visuals.

Yes, when most of the original fanbase bought PS2 expecting (rightly so!) to see the series continue there.

How was this a reasonable assumption when Zero was always bound for the GC after moving over from the N64?

Back in that day, I had always assumed RE would be on at least PS2 and GC, and I was right.

That's only if you choose to give Barry his gun back. If you don't, Lisa will kill him.

I sold my copy of remake a while back :( I want to replay it.

Having never played the first one, I remember a promo gamestop had where if you traded in sonic adventure 2 battle, you'd get $35 towards remake, so I instantly did it, that first day was amazing.
I must have replayed that game 12 times, never did use Chris lol , I needed jills inventory space B^)

As for the other games:

Never played resident evil 2 until last year, I need that game remade now! I finished it but I want to see REmake's style done on it.

Played resident evil 3 when I was a kid, damn that nemesis , that fucker scared me

Backstabbing? The same what SE did with FF?

Either way I'm glad I got too play Remake, such an awesome game :)

Back in the day I was always hesitant to use Chris, because you're right, Jill has more precious inventory space.

However, if you want a good challenge and an even better feeling of survival, play with Chris on the Mountain Climbing difficulty. Burning bodies at that point becomes imperative.

Oh Resident Evil, my favorite game series next to zelda.

I never owned a Sony console so I never took part in that world. In 2000 my buddy bought a dreamcast and started playing code veronica in front of me and then the rest was history. Bought a dreamcast and played CV. But then I was hooked and had to go back and played the rest. Bought the original on Saturn because I knew 2&3 were coming out on dreamcast. Bought a gamecube the day REmake came out, bought RE0, RE4, RE5 all day one. I bought a 3DS in December half knowing that I wanted to get RE:DS and Revelations. Still haven't had a chance to buy either because i'm beating the zelda games I missed out on with Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks. Today I own REmake, RE0, RE2, RE3 on gamecube to play on my wii. RE5 on xbox. And I had RE4 and RE:CV on cube but sold them to buy the xbla versions when the drop in price or get a deal.

I actually just started replaying REmake last weekend, I remember when I was able to beat it in 2:30 with Jill, now I'm a gimp playing hard mode with Chris

Now that I think about it, Deadly Silence is the only iteration of RE1 that Nintendo-only gamers are able to play, and it was released 10 years after the original game.

It'd actually be really cool if Capcom pulled the same thing with REmake. To celebrate its 10-year anniversary, they release it for the download services or for Vita.

Or Resident Evil: Deadly Silence 3D. :O

I actually hope Capcom gets around to porting CV, REmake, Zero, RE4 and RE5 to 3DS/Vita at some point. Would love to have the entire RE series on the go.

From yesterday's episode:
ltWGL.jpg

industry people/ gamers ran this joke into the ground. But I never thought a mainstream show like this would actually use it. Also, notice that he uses the old school logo, which is fucking awesome.

That's really awesome and cool !

I wish Capcom could at less make a teach demo for RE2 for the next gen consoles... something to make us dream about it like we did with the tech demo of FFVII.
