Resident Evil Nostalgia Thread

I heard the key hunting is back in RE Revelations, but I've not the money for it since it seems like the circle pad pro is a necessary accessory for the game.

I'm playing through Revelations without the circle pad and I can't say I feel the need to go out and buy the circle pad pro. That said Revelations appears to be a mixed bag of old and new RE gameplay. Segments on the ship are (sometimes blatant) throwbacks to the mansion while other chapters are more shooting and action focused. It's been fun, even though I still roll my eyes when I see, "The door is locked. A symbol of a UNICORN WITH A GIANT ERECTION is etched on the door." I, for one, don't miss those days.

0. Worth it? Everytime I pick it up, something frustrates me. (I don't think I'm even that far in, I'm at a scale puzzle.)


God is the inventory management a pain.

More frustration due to the item management will come (several spots need that huge hookshot again) and there isn't too much memorable stuff generally. (The enemies especially, it's mostly like going through some Zoo) It's okay, but just who thought that scratching item boxes was a good idea. For this alternative...

I think that's another thing that bugged me about Zero. The, "gigantic version of _____" enemies became a little too common and those types of enemies are hardly scary at all to me. It was as if the T-virus got lazy and just became a growth serum for every non-human life form it infected.

I'm the exact opposite. Those things are very nostalgic for me. My only gripe with the game is that, though I love the idea of the scanner (Genesis), it's not fleshed out enough. It would've been great if scanning enemies actually gave you info about the enemies, such as weak points. Scanning around rooms and such is fine -- I don't mind it -- but I think giving some type of bio info about the enemies would have tied things together more.

Overall, though, the game feels like a really good mix of new and old. The original RE is still my favorite, warts and all, and it's nice that Revelations makes me feel like I'm once again playing a game, rather than trying to force some type of cinematic experience on me.

That's exactly what bothers me about most big games today. I've always appreciated the gamey things about the old REs, like connected chests, different keys with symbols of unicorns with giant erections and that kind of stuff. And I still like to play games that contain somewhat unrealistic and uncomprehendably stupid yet fun things more than others.

the new games are much less cinematic than the old ones.
 
I was an oldschool RE devotee and REmake is probably still my all-time favorite but something changed when I fired up Zero. It's the only one I haven't finished and to this day I have no desire to. I think it was that point at which I grew tired of the traditional RE formula, which by Zero was becoming more heavily dependent on puzzles and puzzle gimmicks that really made no fucking sense in a survival horror universe. Then I looked back and realized that I hated pretty much every puzzle and key hunt in all the RE games. Needless to say I was amazed by the turn RE4 took and although I admit RE4's effect on the series' legacy hasn't all been positive I think it was the right call to make.

Capcom's mostly ditched the shitty puzzles since RE4 but like everyone's noticed they've dialed the action up to 11 while forgoing the survival horror aspects of the series almost entirely. I'm hoping one day they'll find a way to make an RE game truly scary again
by rebooting the franchise and burying the goofy fucking "story" they've stumbled through to date.

That's a lot of hate for RE Zero. I honestly didn't think it was that bad. A lesser RE game, but that's about it.

I had less fun with CV. Dead serious.
 
I bought and played this game when i was in like the 6th grade. Got through it with the worst ending over one weekend and then spent the next 2 weeks perfecting and loving every nook and cranny of the entire experience all the while showing it off to every single friend I had and capping every gameplay session off with "You have to go out and buy this friggin game!!"

One of my good friends Ryan watched maybe 5 minutes of me playing on my way back into the mansion for the 2nd time and after picking his jaw up off the floor begged me to borrow the game for a while. I made him let me hold on Einhander and off he went. One week later I go over to his place for the afternoon and his drop dead amazing sent from heaven GORGEOUS AS ALL HELL older sister walks up to me as I step through the door and says "Hey.. are you Ryan's friend we borrowed that Resident evil game from?"
"uuuhhh....yea."
"That was FUCKING rad. I've never had a game scare me before... you gotta come over sometime and help us with this one part..." And off she goes about how kickass RE is. I was then and will forever be lovestruck with that chic and still harbor the creepiest 15 years later crush on her.
I made her play through the game as Chris. "It's so much harder. You have to run away A LOT" ...

not enough time to write how many good times these games brought me. The first is and always will be king. I personally loved RE2 but i hear a lot of people rate it pretty low in the series. The first GamePro images of SO MANY ZOMBIES made me die a little inside from excitement.
 
My memory is renting this game. It's hard to imagine now, but the playstation was an untested system that came out after the failed 3DO. Resident Evil was so no name title too, so it was a bit of a gamble to rent both of them.

Was such an amazing game. Yeah people mock the voice acting, but the fact that there was any at all made it seem such a step up. The graphics of the mansion were amazing too.

Also echo the RE2 intro scene being amazing. Of course it looks awful now but at the time it really was great. I liked the intertwined stories in re 1and 2. I wish they would do that again (if they haven't).

I rented the game as well the first time i played it and i had the same impression. Even though the voice work was shit it felt so awesome and cinematic.

I could almost cry listening to these themes now, it's like it hits a nerve and I'm back in the mid-ninties as a teenager playing these games on a dusty PS1. Man I wish time travel was possible :(

Me too, I wonder if there will ever be room in the game market for a far slower paced and puzzle oriented RE game. I guess kids today just want to endlessly shoot stuff and that's why RE4 went in a direction I don't like.
 
I think that an RE2make would probably be the ultimate Resident Evil game. I would say RE2 and REmake are tied as the best Resident Evil, but if RE2 was remade in the same way that RE1 was, it would easily pull ahead.

REmake still looks fantastic on Dolphin, it's a shame there's no way to upres the backgrounds though:

Resident evil on ps1 was the game that made me buy the machine... so many memories...first game to actually make me jump (yep dog jumping through the window).. oh i can't believe noone "i think" has mentioned when opening the front door to the mansion (first game) and the cerberus head that goes for you lol.. (another cheap but admitedly awesome moment)

REmake was like revisiting a place from the past.. and because of the care and attention to detail in that reimagining makes it my favourite...

"bit of trivia.. i think... someone mentioned of the fmv with chris getting attacked, well screaming.. I remember it, but the actual place where he is attacked "i can't remember actually seeing it in the original... well until Remake.. the part where you turn the corner and the long corridor with the large bird cage just before you go up stairs... it is there, same corridor and the lighting highlights it perfectly... thought it was a nice easter egg..

I'd love it if 2 and 3 got the same treatment at some point before I join joseph ;)

REmake>2>3>CV>4>revelations>..............5
 
In terms of "damsel" type characters who are mostly a burden on the player character:

Rebecca (RE1/REmake) > Sherry (RE2) > Ashley (RE4) > Sheva (RE5, you know it) > Steve (RE: CV)

Those were the days when Capcom screwed over the original fans by making REmake GC exclusive. Imagine a similar scenario; Bioware decides to make ME3 exclusive to PS3, the uproar of the original fanbase would be huge, as it was back in the day.

As opposed to ME1 being 360-exclusive. Because for a long while it was. And really, are exclusives an example of publishers "screwing" gamers?

The simple fact that they did REmake for one console is good enough for me.

I'm actually in love with the whole franchise. Huge, huge fanatic.

I own comics, toys, shirts, keychains, and I recently completed my HUNK costume for comic conventions this summer (my first time cosplaying).

I started with RE2 on N64, and I needed my dad to purchase it for me. I don't even remember how I heard of it, but I do recall it was one of the first N64 games to have FMVs, which was so appealing to me, thinking, "this game is cutting edge to pack that much info on a cartridge." Also, dat COVER. I remember the car ride home, staring at the game cover the whole time. My palms were sweaty, and my body... so so so ready.

Lots of series have changed its predecessors platform. It happens, gotta deal with it.

I had a love/hate relationship with RE0

I HATED the story and how the fall of Bravo team was pushed to the side. Marcus is certainly in the running for worst character design in the series. I wasn't a fan of the enemy roster being a gigantic zoo either. I couldn't stand the slow mo nonsense that leaked over from CV.

I loved the two person gameplay. I thought it was a simple system that really worked. I certainly like it better than how Revelations and RE5 handled it.

I thought the inventory system worked really well and leech hunter is up there with the best bonus games in the series(RE3 and RE4 mercs)

I really liked Billy and his backstory. Him and Rebecca made a pretty good pair.

Difficulty was on the higher end of the RE spectrum.

I thought there was quite a bit to like about RE0 and I never felt like it got stale. I just wanted to blow my brains out whenever a cutscene started.

Yes, when most of the original fanbase bought PS2 expecting (rightly so!) to see the series continue there.
 
It took two years for my local video store to have a copy of Resident Evil in stock for me to rent, and when I finally got it home for a weekend in 1998 I wasn't even able to finish it because I didn't realize I could examine the Eagle of East and Wolf of West books to get the medals out from inside them.

The only way we're going to get the old RE back is if Shinji Mikami and Yoshiki Okamoto return to capcom.

I remember mikami saying he doesn't want to play RE5 because he knows it's not the game he would of made.

I miss these little things too....

I mean I'm playing as Chris in RE5 and I don't feel like this is really Chris from RE1.

But when I did play him in Code Veronica, I felt it.

Capcom really screwed up the characters and the story.

Though the story was pretty ridiculous in general, I also really liked finding reports that would refer to other games' characters and events and kind of refine the series' world, while being not overly blatant.

Yeah that was my favorite part. Chris' marksman trophy, team photograph, Rebecca's desk having a first aid spray.

Shinji Mikami touted the game as a GameCube exclusive. In an interview with a Japanese magazine, Mikami even claimed that he would "cut [his own] head off" if Resident Evil 4 came to the PlayStation 2. This claim was parodied in God Hand, which featured a racing dog named "Mikami's Head." Recently in an interview he gave apologies for Resident Evil 4 going multiplatform. He felt quite bad, believing some people bought a GameCube just to play the Resident Evil 4 without knowing that it would finally be made available for PlayStation 2.

I wonder why he felt bad for the GC crowd, but not the PS2 crowd. Those with GC could at least play all the REs. Many people bought the PS2 without knowing the RE series would be made GC exclusive.
 
Shame Wesker became almost a joke character now. I think Nicholai from RE3 was really good evil guy. I know he's in Operation Racoon City, so I'm going to get it.
 
I owe one of my most hilarious gaming moment to Resident Evil 0. I think I was playing as Rebecca. I encountered one of these giant toads which grabbed me and started to swallow me while Billy was there, turning right and left like an idiot and doing absolutely nothing to save me. It was so funny that I didn't even get mad but it made me lose all trust in an AI partner... XD

I encountered one of these giant toads which grabbed me and started to swallow me while Billy was there, turning right and left like an idiot and doing absolutely nothing to save me. It was so funny that I didn't even get mad but it made me lose all trust in an AI partner... XD

I never had that happen unless he was out of ammo or set to not attack. AI in RE0 was simple but it always acted how it was told to.

That would be because RE4 Leon showed any traits of RE2 leon aside from turning down Ashley and RE5 Chris is just a more a serious take on RE1(not REmake) Chris.

With RE4 I felt that it wasn't the same Leon, but just because RE2 Leon was like a clean slate. Basically, RE4 characterized Leon, where RE2 merely introduced him.

I mean, the guy had the roughest first day of any police officer ever. He was nothing before that, but it's what came after that made him who he was. It was believable.

Chris in RE5 doesn't really feel like Chris from previous games, but that's probably just because he's kind of a bland character. That said, sort of like Leon, I feel that RE5 was a departure from the character's origin because of the events occurring between games. Chris is hardened after going through so much, and his bulkiness kind of reflects that, too.

Considering that the RE games take place years apart, while I have attachment to characters I also find it easy to understand when they don't seem exactly the same from one game to another. And besides, in the case of RE4 in particular I'm happy with how Leon turned out; it was good for him to lose the rookie cop persona.

RE2 Leon had plenty of character. He was the idealistic rookie cop that nobody listens to. He tries to play things by the book which proves to inadequate for the situation at hand and ends up driven to to take on Umbrella for everything they did. Not to mention the the hurt he goes through because of Ada and how that affected him.

All of that is gone with RE4 Leon. RE5 Chris has made it his goal to clean up Wesker's mess. Chris wasn't all that bright in RE1. The game is constantly taking digs at him for that and how all he is really good for is kicking ass and being able to take a beating. He was a big oaf and it made for a pretty endearing character. RE5 Chris is played really straight but it's still a better fit than doubtful leader the REmake made him out to be. RE5 Chris felt a lot like CV Chris except without the big lanky character model.
 
A few years ago I could speed run Resident Evil 2 in about an hour in a half, 15 or so minutes over the current world record. I may actually keep trying this since it is one of my favorite games.

I don't remember much of RE3, so I may actually play through that again.
