Resident Evil Nostalgia Thread

I'm so bummed out that Capcom decided to let go of the semi-realistic character design and go with an anime look that doesn't make any fuckin' sense like this...

jessica.jpg
Wtf is this shit?
Even if you let the stupid, nonsensical and impractical "high-heels in a combat suit" slide, it takes a whole new level of imaturity and incompetence to come to, and approve, a design like this.
I can't imagine that during production no one said "Hey, this character design... Well... It's fucking retarded!".

I got the RE5 Artbook recently and in the Jill section, they showed the various sketch with one of the showing Jill with her mind-control apparatus around her neck and in the text section it said that the director told the artist that if they put it on her chest, they could show off more skin and she'd be sexier to which ''all the guys in the studio were okay with.'' Herp derp.
Well, I can imagine now.

oT:
Two or three years ago I saw a (used) GameCube and all RE (used also), but since this is Brazil, the GC was U$$260,00 and each game US$60,00. *sigh*

At least I finished all them on the Saturn/Dreamcast. Never played Zero, and REmake just a little. Holy shit REmake is gourgeous.
"Hey, why do I need this
flask to carry kerosene?
Humph, maybe for something later...
Wait, I killed you zombie! Why are you rising and running so fast? Oh shit! Oh shit! Where is the Safe room! Where is the Safe room! Oh shit another one!!! Mommy!!!

I hate all of you in this thread, because I can't play these games.

I clearly remember my uncle going through the first RE phases, with his PS hooked up to the stereo. Shat my pants, I was like.. 6-7.

Well, I tried to play RE3 when I was 12-13 but I didn't get too far.

I tried to play REmake, but I ended up with no ammo.
I restarted, killing every fucking zombie with the knife. Nobody told me about crimson heads.

And that's it.

I mean.

how can I dodge the zombies? I hate this! Fuck you Capcom, and fuck you for not taking these games to XBLA-PSN-somethingelse with a noob-friendly difficulty setting option.

I remember back in the day when the RE2 demo came out. I played it at a friend's house late at night. After I finished I had to walk home in the dark to my house a good half mile away. I've never jumped at so many shadows before in my life. I swear I even heard that telltale licker hiss coming from a few alleys I passed.

I think that an RE2make would probably be the ultimate Resident Evil game. I would say RE2 and REmake are tied as the best Resident Evil, but if RE2 was remade in the same way that RE1 was, it would easily pull ahead.

REmake still looks fantastic on Dolphin, it's a shame there's no way to upres the backgrounds though

I really hope that Capcom can find the incentive go ahead and find a way to make REmake and Zero HD Versions. The character models look fantastic.

Sooo...

I have a PAL GameCube, memory card, controller, RE0, REmake, RE2 and RE3 just sat here collecting dust. I just can't get past the GameCube controller, I truly hate it, just as I feared I would when I first wanted to play REmake and RE0. I'd be willing to part with them for a fair price.

I really like this thread. I'm not that big a fan of the PS-era Resident Evils, but I sure did enjoy them. But REmake is really something special. It was my first game of the last generation and it really blew my mind. The graphics and sound were incredible and I still think it is one of the best looking games even today. It is great to explore the mansion and find a key or item from time to time that helps you getting through some locked door you've encountered before. Everything is implemented so well. The best thing is the atmosphere though. You're running out of ammo and you know there are a couple of crimson heads between you and the next save room, but you have to make it there. Or the simple, yet powerful melody of the aqua ring. I've never had any problems with the controls either and I think that the camera angles made it a way deeper experience.

REmake was also the first game that inspired me to do speedruns. I'm sure no master, but I like to challenge myself. I still have to clear the invisible enemy mode, but I know that I'm going to replay this game frequently so I might do it sometime.

I'm also somewhat intrigued to play Revelations knowing that it's more "back to the roots". But I don't think it's ever going to happen, since I know I'll never buy a 3DS.

I love me some old Resident Evil but c'mon we all know Resident Evil 4 is way better than Resident Evil 0. And way scarier.

God RE0 sucked...I picked it up after REmake hyped me to high heaven and after the train section it was a total mess.
RE4 is better than RE0, definitely. Then again, RE4 is arguably better than most of the entire series. Regardless of the move from survival/horror to action/horror, the pure design of RE4 is brilliant through and through. There's nothing else quite like it.

RE0, I thought was a weak Resident Evil game, but not terrible. It just came at the end of "old RE" and showed how dated the classic design was. They didn't know what to do with it so they just threw a bunch of ideas out there while sort of rehashing the mansion/police station.

I enjoyed that game on some level, anyway. The drop from REmake to RE0 is like the drop from RE4 to RE5. Trying to replicate the goodness of the predecessor, and failing. Though honestly, at the end of the day RE5 actually left a worse taste in my mouth than RE0 did.

Additionally, I tried to play Code Veronica (for the first time) a good several years after RE0, and I wasn't able to finish it. I was at least able to finish and mostly enjoy RE0, regardless of its flaws. Something felt "off" about Code Veronica to me. Maybe I should buy the HD revival version and give it another go. But for now it seems like RE0 is underrated and RECV is overrated.

I remember playing the demo of RE2 over and over again while i was waiting for the game to come out...this was my first experience with the series. When i finally got the game i could play the demo section with closed eyes. :p
Good times...

But Dead Space is at least as action-oriented as RE4 and 5. They kind of admitted that it was basically RE4 in space (with some of its System Shock roots remaining). It has some mechanics that make it look like a survival horror, it's still mostly about confrontation and action sequences. Especially DS2.

Yeah I was really disappointed in DS in that regard. It's just another shooter, brilliantly done and with awesome atmosphere but still a shooter.

That'S all good and well and correct but it's a different genre. RE0 is survival horror and RE4 a fantasy/fairytale shooter with castles and monks and millions and trillions of enemies. That's just not what I want from an RE game.

Yep, it definitely depends on what you want from an RE. I like RE4 a lot too and it was one of my favorites on Gamecube, but I don't like it as an RE.

I was so hyped when There was a rumor floating the RE4 on ps2 might be a different game and actually be canned original ghost airship version that was shown in first RE4 trailer. Sadly it was just a rumor............

£25?

RE2 still has the best cover as well. I picked it up based on the cover alone.

I like the EU cover more.

They really should make a HD version of REmake, if only to let the original fans of the series who never owned Gamecube/Wii have the chance to play it.

Did RE:Umbrella Chronicles or RE:Darkside Chronicles change/add anything to the previously established RE story? Are they even considered cannon?

Yeah they are part of the series canon, UC shows what Wesker was doing during the events of RE0-3 and has a brand new scenario in Russia. DC shows how Leon and Krauser first knew each other before the events of RE4.

I'm the only one here who is starting to wonder if RE3 isn't best RE?

Carlos was blah but I love the vibe of that game.

I've always thought RE3 was the best game in the series by far. I thought Carlos was awesome. I liked the whole supporting cast actually.

Damn all this talk has me wanting to play through the series again. Might give an RE2 knife run another shot. I keep getting stuck on the damn gator though. He never seems to take the same amount of knife shots. Some times he goes down with just a few and others he takes an obscene an amount. I figured it was connected to hitting him in the eye but some of the runs where I get the most eye shots take the longest. The rest of the game would be super easy but that damn gator.

Yes you are :P

For whatever reasons I never enjoyed the third and now it's probably too late to give it another shot. After REmake I just can't go back to PS1 graphics.

I like the EU cover more.

Imho that was one of the few times the US cover was better.

The PAL cover doesn't even make any sense, looks like some Terminator game.

EDIT: F**k it. I'm gonna start with RE2 right now.

Gah, that kinda looks like a bad photoshop to me. I can agree though that the RE4 EU art is pretty superior to its NA counterpart.

yeah defo prefer the EU cover. you can tell its creepy just by the cover, the US one could be just a pedophile or something.

RE3 isn't the best, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. Nemesis was a great villain who really increased the intensity of the game.

REmake actually knocked RE1 down a peg, so now my order of preference of the first three games is: RE2>RE3>RE1

Resident evil 2 does not need a remake. Its more or less perfect as it is.
It doesn't absolutely require one, but of any game in the series it would definitely deserve the upgrade the most.

RE0 was actually quite a tease, considering that it featured an area from RE2.

Not the best, but I actually like it more than RE2. But I can completely understand that the two scenarios and all the changes RE2 brought with itself convinced people more. RE3 isn't that much of an improvement after all compared to RE2. And the fact it had only one scenario was probably a drawback for many.

I was always disappointed with the resi 2 box after years of eyeballing my resi 1 cover with madnut chris on the front being attacked from all sides by holographic spiders and a large crow.

best boxart.

Can't unsee those pics from the mirrored boxart thread since I first saw them. XD

Man, this brings some good memories. I'm going to set up a whole month this year and just replay them all in sequence. RE4 is a masterpiece, but it doesn't even match my love for RE1 and RE2. "The master of unlocking" FTMFW!

RE3 is the only one I didn't finish. It was okay, but I only have the PC version (was given away for free in a PC gaming magazine a few years ago) without a gamepad. I quite liked the game, but tank controls + keyboard are a true pain. I'm stuck on Nemesis after the clock tower.

I quite liked it until then, but Nemesis can be annoying and the slightly more action orientated city setting suffers even more from the old mechanics.

Really? I played REmake on Dolphin and much preferred KB to gamepad, holding the W key down and using A and D to turn feels really natural.

So RE thread, this topic made me pick up the only RE I own that I haven't finished:

re0_3.jpg

0. Worth it? Everytime I pick it up, something frustrates me. (I don't think I'm even that far in, I'm at a scale puzzle.)

God is the inventory management a pain.

i remember spending a week at a friends house on summer vacation.

we played through resident evil and i still remember the adrenaline rush fighting the tyrant at the end.

the design and structure blew me completely away. i ended up buying my playstation for resident evil 2. so worth it

Just 1K'd Code Veronica.

Now I busted out the Dreamcast to get some RE2 action.

I wish that RE2 would get the REmake treatment in HD.

I know.... tell me about it.

My less favorite RE game ever.... yes even less favorite than 5.

I wish that RE2 would get the REmake treatment in HD.

They should make one Remake that includes both of RE2 and RE3... because they are the only main RE games that left without any upgrade since the 32b era, and they are so connected to each others .

Resident Evil (long box version) was the first game I bought for my brand new Playstation way back in 1997. I've been a huge fan of the series ever since. I like the new games (I think I like RE5 more than most here on GAF; having a partner to play with all the time helps I think), but the old games are my favorites. Code Veronica being my most favorite, followed closely by REmake on GC.

Recently I replayed RE3 (the only numbered game in the series I never cleared) and posted a bunch of stuff about it on my blog; here are some links and pictures if you don't want to click through:

Now I'm playing Revelations and it does bring back nostalgic memories of the old games. I've started posting about it as well; here are some links/pictures:

There's a bunch more on my blog; I'm seriously not trying to get page views or anything, but I was JUST experiencing this same nostalgia for the old RE games and I am too lazy to copy/paste everything I said there, sorry lol

How does REmake play on the Wii (the Archives version)? I've always wanted to play this game, but I was a pussy at the time. I remember this being quite scary.

It plays exactly like the Gamecube version, especially since you can just use the Gamecube controller.

But using the Wiimote is weird. You don't play with motion controls, you move with the nunchuck and you use buttons on the Wii-mote to shoot, open the status screen, etc. It's just Gamecube controls mapped to the Wii-mote, so I always found using the GC controller preferable.

I was an oldschool RE devotee and REmake is probably still my all-time favorite but something changed when I fired up Zero. It's the only one I haven't finished and to this day I have no desire to. I think it was that point at which I grew tired of the traditional RE formula, which by Zero was becoming more heavily dependent on puzzles and puzzle gimmicks that really made no fucking sense in a survival horror universe. Then I looked back and realized that I hated pretty much every puzzle and key hunt in all the RE games. Needless to say I was amazed by the turn RE4 took and although I admit RE4's effect on the series' legacy hasn't all been positive I think it was the right call to make.

Capcom's mostly ditched the shitty puzzles since RE4 but like everyone's noticed they've dialed the action up to 11 while forgoing the survival horror aspects of the series almost entirely. I'm hoping one day they'll find a way to make an RE game truly scary again
by rebooting the franchise and burying the goofy fucking "story" they've stumbled through to date.

Then I looked back and realized that I hated pretty much every puzzle and key hunt in all the RE games.

I actually loved the key hunting in the classic RE games. It's part of the design that makes RE so great. I miss the times where I knew the mansion or the police station by heart, and when I picked up a new key, I knew exactly where to go. It forces players to backtrack and that makes it scary for players too because that's when players remember they've never killed the zombie in the hall on the way to the locked door or worse yet, a hunter might be waiting there in the once empty hall.

I heard the key hunting is back in RE Revelations, but I've not the money for it since it seems like the circle pad pro is a necessary accessory for the game.

So I started RE2 yesterday and I'm really surprised how well it still holds up. The only thing I'm missing is the quick turn also a map button would be nice. Other than that it's as awesome as I remembered. Already low on ammo (even though I managed a few multi-headshots with the shotgun) and mad at myself for wasting a few herbs. No problem with the tank controls, it's kinda fun maneuvering around the zombies.

Limiting the saves is also adding so much to the suspense, they should really bring back ribbons, maybe add an oldschool mode to the next RE.

And yeah item management is a real pain in the ass.

Even got quite scared two or three times (it's so awesome when the Licker passes by the window), that's something that no game since RE2 managed (and I played pretty much every horror game I could get my hands on since then) ..

Game looks ok on my 46 LCD, way better than I imagined.

Honestly I thought the game would be a bit of a letdown after all those years but it's quite the opposite. After playing all these wannabe horror games the last two gens (Dead Space, Condemned, RE4/5 and so on..) is nice to see that my bitching that the genre is dead wasn't just nostalgia but a fact.
