Wii owners, I have one en route. It's my first Nintendo console since the SNES I got on my 15th birthday (1995 yo!). I have an official YPbPr cable. So, Wii into PVM or HDTV? My tv has really good 480p over YPbPr imo. I'm thinking HDTV for Wii games and if there are any VC titles that I can't play on og hardware I'll go PVM for those.

Fuck. I want BOTH! Specifically that component one.

In lesser news, I had a hankering for my small CRT and composite and 8-bit images from the new Final cart. This one is much better then the first releases...just better all around.

I know this thread is all about chasing perfection. But this setup is near perfect to me as well:

Danny Dudekisser

I paid good money for this Dynex!
My new TV stand should be here soon-ish, and that'll give me a place to actually put a bunch of systems... so that's going to be a huge boon for actually having a halfway decent setup for the first time in 8 years.

Way too much fucking awesome happening in this thread right now.

Can I just say how nice it is to see that PVM haul to go to a real retro gamer? Excellent. Had a similar experience a couple years ago at my employer. It's a small private college with a TV studio for the media program. Five BVMs in storage. I have two.

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
I still don't like his component switch. I understand why he made it like that but I hate the ports pointing up on it.

Works with Composite I believe.

Good point, although in reality for my current setup I would just need one composite and about 4 S-Video. Composite is only for the NES, I haven't stepped into the realm of modding it for RGB yet and still need to get RGB cables for my SNES/PSONE and a SCART to Component converter to use them all on my consumer JVC.

I have a PVM but it's only 14 inches so it's a little rough to play on for extended periods being that small.

@Bodine

That is such a sweet haul, I would have made the same choice and easily have pulled $500 for all of those. Hope you get plenty of mileage out of each of them.

They look great on both, it depends on the game for me when it comes to preferring HDTV or SDCRT. Monster Hunter Tri for example, definitely on my HDTV. Mario Galaxy, my CRT.

I find that VC games also look nice on an HDTV, it appears to just line double the native 240p image when the Wii is set to output 480p. If on an SDCRT it will output 240p in component which is only a small step from the quality you can expect with RGB.

Ok, trying my HD Retrovision cables with SNES on my plasma TV. The bottom half of the screen looks great but the top half has a weird blur effect. Anyone have any ideas here? Clearly the TV can read the signal. I have never heard of a TV creating this kind of effect. Surely it's the cable right?

BTW, tried two consoles with two games on each. Same effect every time.

EDIT: Genesis works perfectly. So it's not the TV. But ... the image not all that great. Miss my scan lines. TV has only the most minimal amount of lag, though. I'd bet if I had an OSSC it would work really well but ... think I'm done trying to anything with a modern TV when I have a PVM available. I'll never learn...

Alot of wii games are 16:9 so if you're happy with the picture quality on a flatscreen just roll with it!

Most vc titles can be forced to 240p which makes playing them a dream on a CRT.

Hack that wii asap. It's such a wonderful machine with homebrew!

Great shot man! That really brings me back to the days of playing in my friends garage when our parents would kick us outside. We would all huddle around a tiny tv with an n64 hooked up using an rf-pigtail adapter. Even back then we knew it was ass but we didn't care.
Some people get too caught up with resolution or frame rate and forget a time when we were grateful to just play whatever we had.

Edit: I've had a few people PM about selling some of the PVM's I picked up. If you're willing to make the drive to Louisiana I'll sell the 1954Q's for $250 each. I think thats a pretty fair price and would like see them go to the community anyways instead of horded in my spare room. (i'm looking for an MVS and an RGB NES too if you want to trade)

Am I the only one who tihnk the one on the left looks better?

bvmcomsgg.jpg

It's the color of the BVM that's making it look bad,way to much red. Also the scanlines aren't that sharp on the CRT when looking at it normally. My Panasonic does that, when taking up close pictures they look nice but when you're playing they sort of bleed into each other and look like dots instead of lines. The PVM and BVM has nice, hard straight edges that are clearly defined.

Not having a PVM for a while and using a CRT I thought it looked just as good. But now that I have one again to A/B with a SDCRT it isnt even close.

Maybe its the SNES funky resolution? I couldn't say without pics.

It all depends on your tastes. Remember also though, these photos don't really convey what these screens look like in person. They show differences, yes, but really well calibrated displays always look far better in person than in photos.

Also, some people just like more subtle scanlines and less sharpness. There's nothing wrong with that and sometimes I agree with it. To be completely honest, any CRT that takes S-Video or better and is in good condition is going to be a really great option for most systems. RGB/Component are amazing, but hardly necessary for enjoying gorgeous 240p graphics.

No, PVM/BVM's are reference quality.

Yeah, that's the correct way of putting it.

BVM blows it out of the water. pictures don't do it justice.

Thanks, I'll try to find a PVM then.

If PVMs are expensive by you, really anything that takes s-video or better will be better than a fixed-pixel display as long as it's in good condition.

Yeah. Also,a set of HD Retrovision cables into a component WEGA will get you as close to a PVM as possible without owning one. If you plan to use SNES alot get a mini and have it modded, thats probably as big a jump in terms of sharpness and clarity as a PVM to an SDCRT.

I have a friend visiting me in a couple of weeks, and we want to do a play through of an NES title. We were thinking Castlevania or Metroid.

Any way, my NES runs composite. I want to get it modded for RGB, but I want it for when my friend is here. So the question is: does anyone have a good estimate of how long it takes for the Tim Worthington RGB board to ship to some place like Florida, and/or is anyone on the board here doing express NES RGB mods? I would pay a bit extra for the express service of course.

I mean, composite is probably ok for now, just wondering.

Have you considered an AVS? Will cost about the same and you can play it on your big screen. I love mine to death.

I wish I did this. I bought the sharp twin famicom turbo, everdrive n8 and fds stick. By the time I get around to grabbing the rgb board I should have just gone with the avs/nt/mini.

The sharp twin famicom is fucking rad though.

How do you feel about cable length though? That was the thing holding me back. I went with an AV Famicom for the RGB mod in the end thanks to the controller ports.

tbh no I haven't, since I have a Framemeister, pro monitor, and SCART to component transcoder going into consumer CRT (which I'm getting rid of) it made sense to me to stick with analog RGB setups. I'd like to be able to use it on a CRT as well, if I decide to go that route in the future again.

They're quite a bit more expensive than an RGB board right?

The AVS is $184 after shipping and taxes right now, which is significantly cheaper than getting an RGB modded NES

I don't think I'm that much of an NES freak. And for some reason, I fetishize having an RGB modded original console, so part of the appeal is in that.

Please post in here if you find someone to do the mod. I have been looking for a while to get one modded.

The cable length isn't great that's for sure. Because Im still using composite with it I use a long a/v cable and I just drag the console out onto the floor in front of the couch old school style. Everything is packed away right now but when I eventually RGB mod it I also intend on extending the controller wires.

What a good way to find a PVM locally? I tried to get one on ebay last year, but cancelled after finding out it was a poor quality one.

Also I got my Gameboy Player working now with Gameboy Interface. It's S-Video, but it looks great on my CRT. Thankfully the NTSC Gamecube I bought locally at Disc Replay has the digital port still.

It's tated the wrong way though. Unless you're the Spiderman, then it doesn't really matter. :D
Seriously, too bad most shmups from that generation didn't provide a full set of display settings (rotate clockwise, counter-clockwise, etc...).
