Retro AV Club Thread 2: Classic Gaming Done Right!

Thanks for the input guys. Im doing 1920x1080 for the line 5x output. Line3x seems to work without issue but it doesnt fill the screen like 5x does. Ill try other 5x resolutions and report back.

edit: So it's definetly a sync related issue. Several games constantly drop sync completely on line5x but line3x solves everything. Any other resolution on 5x fucks with the aspect ratio so thats a no go. It's really not a big deal because when I move I'll have my dvdo edge hooked up to this TV. I was just playing around after hearing the update helped with compatibility on the ks8000

On most of my displays, having it set to 5x and 1920x1080 results in overscan. With 1600x1200, the aspect ratio set to 4:3, and my KS8000 set to 4:3, it results in a decent picture.

Here's a shot from those exact settings:

I either use that, or line3x at 16:9, depending on my mood.

So at Nintendo's shareholder meeting someone asked about the GBA VC, at which Nintendo's reply was that they have the mini and are looking for psychical ways to do so.

If this means a Gameboy or Gameboy Advance classic system...

That's how we get Mother 3.

So I was looking to get some back up JP21 RGB cables for some of my systems and went to my go to seller on eBay "retro consoles accessories"only to be shocked by $1,000.00 prices...

What in the world did I miss?? Last time I ordered cables from her about two years ago, I paid less than $30.00 a piece.

Retro Console Accessories used to previously take down their listings whenever they filled the daily quota

Now it looks like they jack up the prices to keep the listing up, which is fine by me since I won't have to constantly update my ebay watch list whenever their scart cables go back up the next day

Not sure if I asked this before, sorry if I have, but is it normal for CRT to have "ghosting"?

I'm not sure what to call it, for example, the opening of Super Mario Bros 2 when we fall from the sky, the clouds sorta leave a faint image of where they were, it's only noticable when there is a black screen behind the moving object.

That's good to hear. I'm just going to watch the cables I'd like to pick up and wait for the prices drop.

Thanks to everyone who kindly responded to my RGB query on the last page. I am not worthy: turns out, I needed to hit the fucking "RGB" button to make it all work. Whoops!

Anyway, my jaw hit the floor upon seeing Street Fighter Alpha 2, so there's that.

Has anyone here pre-ordered the OSSC 1.6?

I noticed that my bank had the charge at pending payment for a few days and then it suddenly went away from my account, with the money back in bank total.

It's probably the system where it's a test payment with the actual charges when the order's shipped like Best Buy, but I'm asking to be sure

Yep, but mine hasn't disappeared. It's now appeared as a proper transaction. It's probably just a bank processing thing?

I just got a notification telling me the order's been properly charged now, thanks

Did you try changing this option?

Allow TVP HPLL2x

Controls whether video digitizer H-PLL uses 2x sampling clock internally on supported video modes.

On: Enables 2x H-PLL, generally reducing jitter at the price of inaccurate sampling phase due to internal bug. [default]
Off: Disables 2x H-PLL, which might help with Line5x stability.

I tried that after I went through the wiki. It didn't seem to make a difference but thanks for the input!

Hmmm, I'm betting more on game collections for the Switch to be sold retail. That would be pretty sweet to have a Classic version of all the consoles!

I'm happy with my PVM at the moment but if it breaks down, I will probably start seriously looking into getting an OSSC.

OSSC+ snes question for you guys. I just hooked my OSSC up to my ks8000 for the first time and I'm getting very noticable screen tearing.

I do not get this on my dvdo edge+ sharp aquois combo downstairs . I'm using 5x mode and I've tried playing around with the LPF settings but that hasnt made a difference. Does anyone have any ideas? All of my other retro consoles are packed away so I can't test anything else.

Samsungs have great input lag and have poor motion interpolation (I think that is what its called; whatever its called that is the same as Jutter). I took back a lower model Samsung the same model year as yours because of that. I ended up with a Sony that has more input lag but never tears or has that strobe light effect in fast motion that Samsung had. Even on my framemeister, playing A Link to the Past, the game would suddenly tear and Link would appear 1/6 of the screen away from where I last was. Playing Mario was equally terrible.

Your DVDO seems to resolve it but I even noticed it on the Framemeister too. I am sure the 8000 model has better tech than the 7000 series but there was no way I was going to buy the 8000 series due to the size and cost.

My 2010 model Samsung doesn't do it and it works perfectly w/ the OSSC. I decided to get another one and just have more than 1 TV in my office/game room.

I'll see abot getting me an OSSC after I move out for the millionth time into my new apartment next month.

I would like it for 240p 5x and low latency 480i. I'll keep the Framemeister for most of my 480i needs. Though hopefully a new emulation PC will take over that need too.

How much can the OSSC multiply 480p?

I'm #teamCRT but I could imagine picking one of these up down the road.
I feel the same way but I'd like confirmation that it works on my TV.

My pre-order number got called a couple months ago but I passed. My TV will only take line 2x max via the OSSC. I didn't think it was worth it for that when I currently play on a PVM. I use my HDTV about an hour a week so I'm not going to buy a new one to get greater than line 2x for retro gaming. So I'm a maybe in the future as well but not right now.

multiplies 480p 2x. 480i 2x, 3x, 4x.

I don't want any VC on a new thing. I want VC on the $300 thing I just bought. I don't care if I have to buy my games a la carte. The only thing that would interest me in a GBA VC machine is if it had HDMI out but I can do that now with a RPi3. I just can't get excited for any of these emulator machines.

honestly I just want a GBA with RGB out that isn't a gamecube. not interested in a mini, though I suppose if it gets hacked then it might be a nice little device to carry around

I was set to give up my PVMs now that the OSSC has become such a contender, but I got Rockman X2 today and while playing, I decided to turn on my 14" one (My setup let's me output to 2 PVMs and my TV simultaneously). As much as the OSSC is a great tool and with the audio mod, has become the centerpiece bridging my retro consoles to my modern setup, the PVM still beats it in image quality. I couldn't believe it.

I thought I'd be able to sell these monitors and retire young

, but I'm not sure now.

Also, looking good David!

The OSSC has made me feel comfortable, it works absolutely good enough to be my main way to play my old consoles. I love using them on the big TV and being happy with the looks (I'm not really into artificial scanlines, just roll w/ big chunkys on the OSSC).

That being said, I plan on keeping at least one great CRT for as long as possible (forever?). I like having stuff on the big TV but it's really really easy to have Wii hooked up w/ a bunch of stuff ready to go on the CRT. The aesthetic is exactly my tastes.

It's a good feeling, satisfaction at the end of the hunt. Godspeed my friends.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
I mean, I just look at something like this on the OSSC:

And I'm like "yeah, I'm fine." I really like being able to play on big screens. I mean, yeah, obviously, there are still advantages to CRTs... but we're getting pretty close.

Fuck it, now that OSSC has HDMI I'm in. Will throw the Framemeister on eBay.

EDIT: And after watching the MLIG video about it IK'd already wondering if I made a mistake, lol.. Only RGB consoles I currently have are my NESRGB modded AV Famicom and my RGB Modded SNES Jr... ughhh

got my new 240p hardware this week: psp go!

Nice! I just received mine yesterday along with component cables and the cradle. I didn't know the cradle didn't come with a power source, but luckily the PSP 1000 charger has the same voltage needed.

Have you tried it on an HDTV with OSSC or Framemeister?

Hi all, I have a question.

I recently bought a EuroSCART cable and want to eventually use it with a 1-Chip 01 or 02 SNES (US version) and the Framemeister.

I realize I need to buy a EuroSCART to Framemeister adapter cable, but I was not sure whether I needed just the passive one or the one with the sync separator.

For reference, I have this SCART cable: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Super-Nintendo-stereo-RGB-SCART-lead-SNES-CSYNC-FULL-SHIELD-GROUNDED-cable/201284360714

This website says that:

"Generally for Framemeisters with Firmware 1.08 and above you can use this passive adapter. For older firmware you may experience sync problems when using a "sync over composite video" cable, therefore for older firmware we recommend the EuroSCART to mini adapter with built in video sync separator to achieve composite sync (CSYNC). A composite sync (CSYNC) signal eradicates timing problems often experienced with the XRGB mini up-scaler when connected to particular gaming machines, so even with the latest firmware you may still need a video sync separator if your SCART cable can only supply sync over composite video."

I'm not sure whether the SCART cable I bought only supplies sync over composite video or not.

i haven't yet since i got a CRT. i'm still on the fence getting a OSSC, my TV (kuro 151FD) is known to have a lot of lag so that's the biggest setback of retrogaming on it.

Just the normal EuroSCART cable from Micomsoft.

https://solarisjapan.com/collections/micomsoft/products/eur-scart-adapter

Your SNES should send out CSYNC through the SCART cable and the Framemeister will pick it up just fine. It's literally the same setup I'm using right now, exact same SCART cable and all.

Anyone have experience using the HD Retrovision cables on an OSSC? I've been using them with my SNES on a CRT with component inputs that I've had for the last 10 years, but I know at some point it is going to kick the bucket, or I won't have the space to dedicate for it, and I want to have a replacement in mind whenever that day comes. Is there really any kind of noticeable difference with using them as opposed to SCART cables?

I think the basics of SCART vs Component is RGB SCART has slightly better colour accuracy, but each console also has its own quirks to look out for, for example the PS2 tends to drop sync over Component, so you are better off with RGB, where as the original Xbox outputs a blurry image over RGB, so Component is better for this system.

On using Component with the OSSC, I tried this with the PS2 once and I couldn't see much difference to RGB SCART, although I read that OSSC had some issues with SNES output (has always been fine for me over RGB).

The other thing to watch out for with SCART is that it can be used for composite signals, as well as RGB, so you do need to be careful that you're buying the right kind of cable.

After a small delay due to a technical hiccup, it looks like the gscartsw lite will be shipping out at the beginning of this week.

Pretty cool - I like getting new retro shit. Though, this reminds me that I need to buy a bunch of SCART cables now... this shit never ends, mayng.

Man, repro carts have totally ruined Ebay as a source of retro games. I had a couple drinks and wanted to spend some money on a copy of Conker's Bad Fur Day but the amount of repro listings makes me not trust the supposed non-repro ones.

At least SNES sellers semi-frequently take pictures of the PCB. N64 does seem to be the wild west.

I see tons of listings for repro boxes too, they list them as custom. I'm wondering how easy they are to tell the difference on, at least with the cart you can look at the pcb.

I don't have a problem with translations. But, yeah, people straight up selling bootlegs and calling them repros is crazy. I was looking at Pokemon GameBoy games the other day, and holy shit. They have found a way to sell fakes without eBay caring by simply calling it something else. It's insane.

This is normal. I've seen it on multiple CRTs and only with the same kind of material you mentioned, typically very bright i.e. white content scrolling/moving against a black background.
