Retro Studios working on fucking Donkey Kong

Fucking Donkey Kong would be quite difficult. I commend them on their efforts. I'm sure that joke has already been made.

I'm okay with them making DK. DKC:R is a phenomenal game.

For people who want a Retro non DKCR game but a Metroid type game instead, here it is:

Looking at videos of this game, directs, it actually looks freaking amazing.

Again, first look of the game did not do it justice. Looks brilliant.

Can't wait.

Yes I would have preferred for them to work on something new, but this isn't bad at all. It's great.

Pretty much sums it up. I understand all of the arguments for Retro doing something different, but "only" getting a gorgeous HD sequel to one of the best platformers of the past decade is pretty darn spiffy as far as disappointments go.

Why are people using sales to try to nullify other people's disappointment? Yeah, no shit DK sells well. That doesn't make this less disappointing.

Retro is a pretty small studio, it's strange how anyone here thought they would be working on some kind of AAA shit. I think these kind of projects is what suit them best.
Because that small studio made the single best game of the PS2/GC era, and it also had some of the best graphics of that era.

They were also the equal top developers graphically on the Wii - Prime 3 was absolutely untouched at the time, and better looking than most PS360 games at the time, bar resolution.

So that's why. They are graphical and game design kings.

Meh, I'm tired of Retroid, so the news makes me happy.

If they do make a new Metroid, then please try something different... like 2.5D Metroid. Just no more crappy scanning, please.

The problem isn´t that Retro makes a successor to the best 2D Jump´n´Run of the last ~18 years but that they are probably not big enough to be able to work on a new Metroid at the same time.
They should´ve been expanded years ago, Nintendo needs their more mature Metroi games to diversify their portfolio.

I notice that Nintendo is banking on the sales of 3DS games recognition to translate to WiiU and maybe vice versa. A much safer ROI and easier marketing due to similarity of game design while banking on the sales of 3DS bigger recognition.

Super Mario 3D Land - Super Super Mario 3D World
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D - Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze
Mario Kart 7 - Mario Kart 8
Super Smash Bros [3DS/WiiU]

My analysis :

Luigi Mansion Dark Moon - Luigi Mansion Wii U?
Wii Fit 3D? - Wii Fit U
Animal Cross New Leaf - Animal Crossing U Leaf?
Yoshi New Island - Yoshi U Island

There's enough smart people here that we could deduce whether Retro has 2 teams at this point.

I remember one of their artists (formally of Naughty Dog?) said he is working on his most impressive project yet. Does it make sense that it would be a DKC game? I also remember they hired an online network person, so if DKC:TF doesn't have anything more than Miiverse support, a strong case could be made that a 2nd game is indeed in the works.

Any thoughts on this?

Thats what I thought the second I saw, that DKCR TF was developed my Retro: "So retro, got two teams now...interesting"

It's not that this game will not be great. It probably will be. It's the sequel to a critically acclaimed game that brought a loved a franchise back to life. It also was probably foolish to expect different, I mean, Metroid Prime was made into a trilogy before the studio moved on. It's just that ever since Corruption, people have been waiting so long to see what Retro was capable of given free reign, and yes, DKCR may have been amazing, but let's pause for a second and direct our attention to the footage (apologies for the poor resolution):

I will tire of video games long long before I will ever forget what stepping into Phendrana Drifts for the first time felt like.

It's not that any of us are saddened by the existence of a sequel to a great game, it's that we're all frustrated by the lost alternative. We were all hoping to see them bring us brand new worlds. It didn't have to be Metroid, it could have literally been anything that would have showcased their talents more. Say all you want about how fun a 2D side scroller is (DKCR was no exception, and neither will the sequel be), it just will not give them that extra dimension of freedom to create really amazing locales, like the ones they've blown us away with in the past.

EDIT: Even though it makes sense to make DK because it sold so well, and the company's name is Retro. Doesn't soften the blow or make it any easier to stop thinking about what could have been.

Everyone knew it wasn't Metroid. I don't know where's the problem here. People thinking that a platform is simpler than an fps/starfox should just stop playing videogames.

They'll figure out how to fuck him, don't worry OP.
From the back, from the front. Vrooom, vroom, in za bathroom.

I wonder if there was this much bitching when Metroid Prime 2 was announced.

I think they announced the Prime series as a trilogy, so probably no bitching. Of course, Prime being one of the best games of that generation helped.

Personally, I loved DKCR and double dipped in 3DS, but I wanted Retro to make a more western title just to cover that side on Nintendo platforms. This is something that made me decide not to buy WiiU not even in long term. Why would I want to buy it if we got Smash Bros, Mario Kart and Mario 3D Land already in 3DS?

Now I'm glad that DKR released to such great acclaim and it turned out to be another game that Retro hit out of the park, and I'm sure the second game will also turn out great.... but c'mon Nintendo! Such an incredibly talented studio that can really do things to bolster your library and you squander them so miserably. I was really hoping that Retro was working on something more original that they could finally stretch their talent on.

... You people act as if it takes less talent to make a beautifully crafted Donkey Kong Country game. Get over yourselves. They chose Donkey Kong over Metroid because they told the story they wanted to tell in the Prime trilogy and have nothing else to say. To make it simply to appease a small maybe 5% of hardcore gamers, doing something they don't want to do, would be a disservice to both them and the franchise.

And this needs to be repeated: Metroid games don't sell. They do 1.5 million maximum. The budget for an HD Metroid would be more than it would make. Donkey Kong Country outsold all Metroid Prime games combined. It's not hard to figure out that means MORE PEOPLE want Donkey Kong.

Retro wanted to make this game and from all the videos it looks better than anything they've ever done before, bias against DKC be damned. You all act like you just wanted a shiny trailer and that's it.

People going fucking crazy here, just it's not their beloved startropics reboot or that crazy, unlikely Star Fox x F-Zero crossover (which makes Nö sense and is never going to happen, guys, get real, people!).
Who cares if Retro is working on this new game, It's motherfucking donkey Kong, man!
can't tucking wait!
That was fanboy fanfiction. Let's be realistic now.

Eric Kozlowsky (the former Naughty Dog employee) seems to be really proud of this game. He pointed out on his twitter that he worked on the snow stage shown in the trailer.

The thing is, Retro is supposed to be making a cool/bad ass/new IP game for Nintendo. They need these kind of games to draw a different audience to their systems. But they aren't.

This is like making Celda when the gamecube needed a cool/mature/bad ass game. Celda is one of the best games ever but it didn't matter.

Please make something different Nintendo.

while i totally get the disappointment - again, i wanted Metroid so hard - i don't get the "SHOVEL WARE" shit at all. i thought DKC was fairly beloved?

Retro could be doing more exciting stuff, no doubt - but some of ya'll make it sound like they just pitched Ice Climbers: NintendoLand 2 microgames.

Not a fan of the genre-ism going on in this thread. Its OK to have a million shooters in the market but holy shit God forbid we have a healthy amount of platforming games! Cant have that!

Serious amount of butthurt. Saw the game on the floor today and it looks incredible by any standard.

also, kinda this

yeah, i can kinda appreciate this too. i wonder if Awakening didn't happen & they somehow ended up on Fire Emblem, how that would've panned out here.

not too surprised it wasnt a new IP though, i figure Iwata's in panic mode to 3DS the WU, meaning recognizable/big seller franchises, for better or worse.

I think the most pressing question, is does Retro have a B team? With the rumors that the trailer was just pulled from last year's e3, Reggie's comments of "I can't tell you about that or they'll kill me", the hiring of artists whose bodies of work consisted of huge adventure game esque art, something just seems off about this being the only game they're working on.

Let's leave Windwaker alone pls.

Zelda's change in tone stopped mattering when Nintendo announced the Capcom Five.

But before that, there was a huge imbalance in the types of exclusives Nintendo was getting. There was Metroid Prime and there was Eternal Darkness. And that was it. Just like now we've got X and Bayonetta 2.

They need another Capcom Five moment.

Honestly a lot of this reeks of people not respecting 2D platformers as a "real" game.

Edit: let me put it this way. If retro was working on a full 3d massive level dkc platformer, everyone would probably love this.

2D games have a stigma of not being enough in todays gaming culture.

This game will be better than The Division and Watch Dogs. It will blow Ryse out of the water, and most of the bloat shown at E3 for that matter. Yet somehow I understand the sense of disappointment. It's just too expected. It might even have been okay if Nintnedo had any other surprises in store, but they didn't.

Or...people who find it baffling that Nintendo thought this was a huge surprise that no one would see coming.

I guess they got it kind of right. No one saw them making a move this baffling.

How is it baffling? They are making a sequel to a critically and commercially successful game.

What's baffling is that people went full retard and dreamt up a StarTropics remake or other crazy shit and are now going crazy because Retro are apparently above making a sequel to one of the best platformers of all time. Nintendo never made a big deal about Retro's next game, they went radio silent for a while just like they do with all their studios when their projects aren't ready to show.

DKCR is the best platformer since the 16bit days and one of the best ever. That said i doubt this is what retro was working on for so long. the wii game was one of the best looking on the system and this one barely looks graphically better. I have a feeling nintendo told them to put their stuff on hold and shit out another asap due to wiiU sales and since it's cheap and easy to reuse assets.

This game looks beautiful, I have no idea why so many people seem to be in an uproar. The first DKCR was better than the original games, and this looks just as marvelous, if not more. This, 3D World, Smash, and X are selling me on the Wii U.

Well, in any rate, the game as it is looks to be a great sequel, but I'll agree that this is disappointing. Retro was like the ace in the hole and it seems a bit wasted on a safe (but surely finalcially logical) sequel.

Because it is.

Played the whole game with "fucking waggle", had next-to-no problems.

I too had next to no problems playing the game with waggle, but I'd be lying if I said blowing wasn't a poor design choice. It completely took me out of the game, and I love to speed run shit like that on my first go. I'm glad the pulling mechanic is here instead of blowing. The waggle for roll was fine though. I ended up hacking it and using the classic controller scheme, and mapping roll to a button and just played the game on CC on my second playthrough.

Don't forget REmake and RE0. Those both came out in the first year and each managed to sell over a million copies. They sure as hell did better than Eternal Darkness.

Monolith:Make a game with middling sales? Great, here's a huge budget and staff to make a big new RPG IP.

Retro:Knock out another great revival of a dormant IP? Decent effort, gaijin. Now go make another to show us you really know what you are doing.

I'm mostly kidding.

Why are people using sales to try to nullify other people's disappointment? Yeah, no shit DK sells well. That doesn't make this less disappointing.

^This. Yes it makes sense from a business standpoint, completely. But does that mean we should go "oh, well, I guess I'm cool with it now."? No.

This was the ONE game I DIDN'T want it to be, and of course it turned out to be it =/.

On the one hand, Nintendo asking one of its best studios to work on a platformer is disappointing. On the other hand this will be an AAA platformer, perhaps the best for years.
