So.... At what point did NeoGaf do a complete °180 towards the oh so beloved DKCR?

I still find it sort of pathetic a sequel to one of the best games of last gen inspired far more anger than 3DWorld's reveal did. The most I can see wrong with it is that it's just furthering the Wii U's lack of genre variety, but as a product in-itself it's going to be fantastic and probably set itself apart from its genre-competition as Returns did.
If MonolithSoft can work on something like X and a 3DS game at the same time, I bet Retro is probably doing the same. That might be where the Metroid game is....I'd love to see a Retro Studios 2d Metroid.
I'm so glad they are working on this and not some crumby new ip with a mature look appealing to western audiences. If there is one thing lacking on Nintendo systems its colorful, family friendly mascot titles. System seller, that's what this is.
There is a significant amount of the hate due to not being what people wanted online, but even if this thread's title wasn't a clue a significant portion GAF at the time of its announcement did have a decidedly negative reaction towards it. I'm not really sure how you couldn't notice this, otherwise the debate for the past few pages wouldn't have been happening in the first place.?
for every 1 'hate' post, there are 10 'I'm happy about this, dkc is so awesome' posts. The reception here is pretty positive given that it is a pretty straightforward sequel.
Personally, I didn't care for DKCR on wii, so I'll be skipping this one.
I love Metroid Prime, but let's be honest: DKC Returns is way more fun than any of them (MP1 may be a better total experience though).
I dont know how I feel about being able to turn in mid air.
They were also the equal top developers graphically on the Wii - Prime 3 was absolutely untouched at the time, and better looking than most PS360 games at the time, bar resolution.
I'm inclined to agree that Corruption looked better than most PS360 games (resolution aside) at the time that it was released. Skytown looked incredible:Yeah... Not even close.

Eugh does that salty thread title ever need a change :/
I want Retro to work on DCKR3 after this one. And I haven't even played the first one yet which I'm about to get for 3DS. They can work on Metroid after the finish the DK trilogy. DK deserves some love too...

Maybe the financial success of DK will help facilitate that.
When the game comes out a lot of crows will be eaten.
I'm really curious to see how this game does given the low install base of the wii u and whether it will drive sales.
I'm pretty sure it will do ok though as the worst case scenario is that sales are poor for wii u version, but the 3ds version sells at least as well as DKCR.*
* I know no 3ds version has been announced, but we all know it will come.
Doubt it. A 2d DKC platformer is a 2D DKC platformer, the room for surprise is limited.
That's the thing. Noone said Retro is not doing anything else lol
LoL, of course it will drive sales!! It's a motherfuckin' Donkey Kong Country Returns sequel for which even David Wise (the snes trilogy's orignal composer) came back![]()
And for a 3DS Version --- errr no. The 3DS could barely handle the Wii Version (half the framerate, less details).
Retro did. They said they are just working on DKC.
Nintendo says a lot of things, to be fair.
When the game comes out a lot of crows will be eaten.
Their staff level agrees with them.
Also what would people say is the level of sales where making DK again was a mistake? If it sells less than MP1, 2, and 3 this time? Also outside of the Wii U needing games this sequel would make a lot more sense on the 3DS.
Then Metroid would have probably sold proportionally worse while costing disproportionately more to make.

BUT WHY ARE THEY STILL NOT USING THE KREMLINGS? AND WHY NOT USING THE AMBIENTATION OF THE SNES GAMES MORE?... i am sorry retro, but in dkcr you can sometimes feel the " why i jumping into those stupid enemies with no personality in this stupid, out of context, stage..."
Donkey Kong Country was the biggest selling game of the Super Nintendo right after Super Mario World.
And it was a Western game that appealed to western audiences, just as the new DKCR and its 3DS port did. It's also a tough as nail platformer in spite of its family friendly look.
The "mature looks" begging is so tiring, yet another variant of the "Nintendo is kiddie crap".
"Mature looks", "new ip" is so superficial, what matters is the game itself.
Actually I don't think they should have worked on Metroid at all. The series needs a break after how Other M bombed and shot a lot of credibility out of the series. I think they should have done some other IP revival like Sakurai did with Kid Icarus if a new IP was off the table. And no I don't think it had to be a gritty dark shooter either.
+ harder to port to handheld. 2d dkcr on wii u + handheld makes huge financial sense.

But "everything" (enemies, bosses, many stages...) is out of place in dkcr apart from donkey kong itself... he is just "lost" in there, and he needs to go back "home".
In terms of loving the first game and not liking this one?
I don't think anyone hates this game or thinks it will be bad. Just not the game some wanted. I think DKCR: TF will be a great game quality wise. I might even enjoy playing it at some point. However there are far to many platformers coming this holiday or already out on the system . Retro Studios was looked to by some as the be THE studio to make something that Nintendo studios in Japan either couldn't or simply wouldn't make given that it was a western studio. So hopes were put on them. Especially with the third party situation thew way it is. That I think is the core of the disappointment people have toward the new DKCR game.

Yup if this is there only game coming in the next 2 or 3 years is such a wasted 3 years after DKCR. They should have been working on a game build for the WiiU taking advantage of the WiiU gamepad, I just dont see how a platformer will push the WiiU gamepad.
If Nintendo doesnt wanna get into the mature FPS and shooter race, why are they not making adventure games? The only announced 1st party adventure game is Zelda WW and its a HD remake. Star Fox and Metroid would have been perfect to bring at this point in the WiiU life.
But "everything" (enemies, bosses, many stages...) is out of place in dkcr apart from donkey kong itself... he is just "lost" in there, and he needs to go back "home". Enemies on the nes games were epic, on dkcr they were an embarrassment in comparation... and sometimes the ambientation in dkcr...
This is to be expected considering they're not the same people. Different folks, different strokes.Kindof funny how people are clamoring for them to to make a new IP, yet complain when they assert some creative freedom within existing franchises
They were big ugly crocodiles. And those too were alien to Donkey Kong at the time, who spent most of his time sitting at the top of a red construction girder throwing barrels at a fat plumber. Change is a good thing.
After how bad Rayman Origins looked shrunk from 1080p to 240p I hope not a 3DS butchered port. Give Monster time to make their own original DK.

"I prefer the old DKC aesthetics too, but we're in the minority"
NO, what? how is that even possible? people?

This is a great example of being blinded by nostalgia. I'm not even going to expand on the fact that there's nothing remarkable about DKC trilogy enemy designs (in fact I find them awful) because that's subjective, but enemies out of place? The tikis are tribal masks, they're pretty much at home in a jungle, they make as much sense as crocodiles. Same goes for the rest of the enemies and bosses, they're animals, what's so out of place about that? And what the hell was "epic" about DKCs enemies? But "everything" (enemies, bosses, many stages...) is out of place in dkcr apart from donkey kong itself... he is just "lost" in there, and he needs to go back "home".
