BOTW wasn't exclusive to Switch
True. It was a cross-gen release with a plaform that sold less than the game itselt would eventually sell on Switch.
For BOTW being multiplaform was as good as being exclusive because nobody had a WiiU.

That's why it sold as much as it did on swich.
Same with Mario Kart.
Samek with any other WiiU game.

Swich on the other hand has sold 100M+ units. Swich 2 sharing games with it slows it down.

Don't get me wrong, I'm excited about DKB, but I don't need to see anymore.

Give us a proper Direct, Nintendo!

I don't like the aesthetic either, it's a bit of a hard barrier for me. Sad, given the quality devs involved.

It evokes for me the trash-tier procedural design of No Man's Sky, which I absolutely loathe.

I hate "random junk in a landscape" look, it feels un-designed in the worst way. My games should be curated gardens of inventive design, like a typical 3D Mario platformer offers.
Gad, can't see those pictures, it really feels like visual sugar overdose, to the point you don't want more of it because it's just "too much"... Also, "random junk in a landscape" is close to what I call modern armor designs in most western shooters (junk armor)

Only reason I'm gonna even look at this game, is because its from the Odyssey team. Sucks that all we are getting is a second banana character platformer, with nothing else even dated yet.

As much as I love Nintendo and their games, this launch has sucked thus far. No Zelda, No Mario, Prime 4 at some point in the future like the past 7 years.

Talk about a dearth of games to play. Switch 1 launch window, this ain't.

How about a new IP title Nintendo? Is splatoon the last one?

People have such bad memories.

Breath of the Wild (cross-gen) and 1-2 Switch were the only first party games at launch. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (a port) came out late April (1.5 months after launch). Then we had ARMs in June (3 months) and Splatoon 2 in July (4 months) with the holiday lineup being Mario Odyssey in late October (almost 8 months) and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 in December (9 months). Neither Mario or Xenoblade has release dates announced at the time Switch 1 launched, not until E3 months later (many people were expecting them to be 2018 games).

Switch 2 launch window is comparative or even better, depending on how the games themselves pan out. Mario Kart World is a step down from BOTW as a launch game sure, but it's also not cross-gen. Donkey Kong Bananza, a new AAA 3D platformer exclusive, takes the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe slot 1.5 months later. Drag x Drive will come sometime in the summer as an ARMs type equivalent, while there are Switch 2 exclusive DLC packs coming for some popular Switch 1 games (Mario Party and Kirby). September through December still need to be filled in, but we know of Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Legends (October), Kirby Air Riders, and Hyrule Warriors as announced 2025 games that will likely release in those months. And that still wouldn't take us to the 8 months after launch mark when Mario Odyssey released, that wouldn't be until February 2026!

Also, third party support was abysmal, indies were only just getting started on it, NSO was just a smattering of NES games instead of frikkin F-Zero GX and Wind Waker, and there was no backwards compatibility whatsoever.

8 years from now this will all blend together just like it does for Switch 1 now and we'll say "Oh yeah, there was a ton of great games!"

Typically Nintendo lowballs the first trailers of a platformer then cranks everything to 11. 3D mario and Odyssey come to mind.

We haven't seen shit for DKB

I'm shocked its even 15 mins. Mario Odyssey's direct portion after initial trailer was only 7 mins

still gives me hope indeed, because there were some areas in the Treehouse footage that actually looked fun, even if I hated the main areas they showed. If there's more of the good stuff I might be able to overlook the awful garish levels, sort of like I had to overlook things like the cooking world in Mario Odyssey.

Nobody remembers how bad the switch 1 eshop was at release. Vroom in the Night Sky was a launch title ffs.

I don't think people remember how anemic most console launches are.

Yahoo!!! The reason I got my Switch! I'm really interested in seeing how involved platforming can get when you can climb most surfaces, roll jump, turf surf and what they call chunk jump. There was some footage of people flying through the levels with these abilities and it looked really satisfying. I think people have this idea that you just dig until the level is no more then game set and match.

What's Chunk Jump? Like a double jump?

I really have no interest in a direct like this. Sometimes Nintendo really goes overboard with overly explaining their first party games, that I just want to say "shut the fuck up and let me play the game". Most of the time the information they reveal in these directs is basic gameplay shit you could have inferred from previous showings. No thanks. I was already sold on the game.

There is going to be a Nintendo Direct this Wednesday. It kind of makes me wonder if they are going to release a demo.
Seems odd that they are doing this so soon.

This is a thread to discuss about it.

already a thread

Well my good sir or ma'am, it appears first Donkey Kong rips a chunk of earth from the ground. Then DK leaps into the air with the chunk in hand, he can jump off of the chunk boosting his jump height.

Think the Yoshi Jettison technique from Super Mario World.

I am wondering if they are going to put out a demo since they are doing this so early.

Pikmin 4 had a demo, so I would not be surprised.

The first game trailer didn't do anything for me ( but that's because I only think of Donkey Kong as an amazing game during SNES 2D games. the one on Nintendo 64 sucked ass and I have no hope for this.

Hopefully, this deep dive changes my mind.

I want a Mario 3D game sequel to Mario 64. No gimmick stuff or super power like hats or a car cleaner backpack :(

I personally don't want that. I like Mario 64 but the thing I like about 3D Mario games is each have their own unique mechanics.

I will now use sarcasm in my response because I am incapable of understanding your point of view: Yeah its selling so badly, they really fucked up

No don't worry about it 😀. Their sales are great but can you imagine the impact of EVERY 3RD PARTY IS HERE right from the getgo? Total dominance…had they sent out the development kids earlier and to more developers as has been documented that many did not get it early if at all before reveal. But that dominance and 3rd party will eventually come.

If you are going to quote me, please don't change the quote.

This is what people don't get...
Right now, Nintendo has the spotlight, sprinkled in are some nice third party offerings. Imagine 'all devs' having dev kits for the last 12 or 18 months (don't know for how long they have been made available). There would be much more ports out now and on the immediate horizon.
People have limited budget. Imagine 3 first party titles and not 5 but 50 third party offerings...one would have to decide wether to buy Mario Kart, Donkey Kong or one of the dozens of other titles.

Sounds exactly like something Nintendo wouldn't want.

Surely the reason they put DK a month after Mario Kart is so that they wouldn't compete for our attention.

I think I kinda like this strategy.

Treat each release like tent pole. When the game releases everyone is aboard.

Though sucks if you wanna know release schedule in advance.

Only issue is, Nintendo makes a ton of games that I simply cannot even imagine why anyone would play them, not just me. So when such games will be given spotlight, I will be pretty much in dark.

I think I will pick up Switch 2 during its final years so I have a good selection of games that are to my taste.

exactly.
Same reasoning third parties are coming later mostly. Would they have had the dev kits, a lot of them would have had ports ready for launch. Less spotlight for Nintendo, less sales.

They are not mutually exclusive you know?
Which is exactly my point. You said they should have done a general direct instead of this one. I'm saying they can do both.

This Direct is gonna have to do a lot to convince me, what I've seen so far hasn't done it.

This game looks like a terrain destruction tech demo that they decided to put DK in, without much else going for it. I have seen zero interesting gameplay so far (smashing through shit is gonna be fun for 10 minutes and then get old), zero interesting environments (the underground theme sucks), very little actual level design, nothing to really do except smash through stuff. Nothing about this feels like a DK game. I wanted DK64 but better.

Breath of the Wild climb any surface
Full environmental destruction
2D section with barrels
Bananas

Not really sure what else you could want.

They already made a better DK64, Tropical Freeze.

Im glad they are trying something a bit different.

Edit: My bad thought you meant DKR.

In BotW the mechanics served the gameplay. Here it just feels like a game with cool mechanics that that are the gameplay, and don't seem that interesting beyond the first hour.
