Donkey Kong Banaza Direct announced for June 18

I'm still not a fan of the art direction of the levels. DK looks great to me. Don't understand the hate for that TBH. But the colors and modeling of the environment is just kind of off-putting to me.

Also concerned that this game will be a one-trick pony, or something like a Switch 2 tech demo, and be super shallow beyond just breaking stuff. Hard to believe Nintendo would do that, but from what they've shown so far, that's it.

Glad they're doing a nice, long ND for this because they really still need to sell it to most of us, I think.

I hate that DK

+1 to the redesign looking horrible.

He went from looking cool to looking retarded.

The problem isn't DK's chara-design, but the horrible art direction of the environments.
I can't even believe it's from a Japanese studio, this problem of garish colors... I haven't seen anything this hideous since Splatoon.

True. It was a cross-gen release with a plaform that sold less than the game itselt would eventually sell on Switch.
For BOTW being multiplaform was as good as being exclusive because nobody had a WiiU.

That's why it sold as much as it did on swich.
Same with Mario Kart.
Samek with any other WiiU game.

Swich on the other hand has sold 100M+ units. Swich 2 sharing games with it slows it down.

Don't say it "slows it down" sister, you have no way of knowing that that's true. Next time, please type "could slow it down", treating a non deterministic universe without any fake certainties really helps our sensitivities.

Thanks for the cherry-picked, low-res screenshots.

First few I came across. Have a few more, those are promo material.

As I said, blurry terrain textures make it look ugly imo. Plus I think the art direction is way weaker than in Mario Odyssey but that might just be me, dunno.

I'm hoping at the end of the direct they announce a demo for the game on the store, I think them doing a direct now is maybe cause they not got as many preorders in as they would like, although for me will buy come release day but so far I just see the smashing mechanic of the game becoming repetitive and boring after a while , hoping the direct goes all out showing what the game about and not like Mario kart direct which was pointless

They always do directs for their big games.

At first I thought the general IQ and art design was close to dislike for me, but when I watched the treehouse gameplay sections I came more around to its style.

The moment to moment gameplay looks very fun and the since I enjoyed Odyssey immensely I have no doubt I'll enjoy this "open world with a main objective but also go find a bunch of optional mini side things" very enjoyable.

I'd you're going to have a large open map with a fully destructible landscape the procedural textures for the chunks are gonna have to look less bespoke and lower res, even if this game was made exclusively for PS5 or XSX it would have these limitations too.

Its just the price you pay for full destructibility. Whether that feeling of destroy everything is fun for hours upon hours remains to be seen but I think if theres enough variety in the landscapes and new moves or what have you then I believe it can be.

The bulk of the content of Luigis Mansion 3 was "just" hoovering physics objects up for 20+ hours but its one of my favourite games ever. I forsee a similar deal here.

All that is to say, I'm very excited for this game and I cant wait for tomorrow direct!

The is a very important Direct, imo. They have shown very little about the game. While, what they talked about sounded very interesting.

Nintendo needs to show the game has more depth than destroying the environment. It feels like Nintendo was desperate to incorporate some Minecraft elements into the game. The reason, imo is to try and pull in the children.

So, we will see how much depth is in this new game. I have high hopes, but Nintendo needs to be more forthcoming with information.

Edit: Tomorrow is important. BTW, NINTENDO!!! We still need a release date for Metroid and we need to see footage of Madden, NBA 2k, WWE, and EA FC!!!

hope they add some dk content into mario kart world
free diddy

I bet they will, and soon. DK only has one costume which is weird, he's the only character that has costumes that only has one. Even Birdo and Shy Guy have two, while the other 'main' Nintendo characters all have four or more.

I think it looks great though the terrain destruction gives me concern that this is more about sandbox gameplay than focused platforming but it is what it is. I still think what they've cooked looks good. I get some Banjo-Kazooie vibes from it (a character riding on the back that expands gameplay options, large 3D worlds with collectibles). I'll take it.

I wonder why they didn't show the actual f'ing game before. They gave us absolutely nothing the first showing, now they put some meat on the bone. Looks a lot better to me than before. I'm actually interested now, wasn't before.

Feels like they do this quite often. Most memorable example for me will always be Mario Odyssey where they didn't even touch on the entire capture mechanic in the first trailer(s).

Exactly. This DK is not a platformer (except maybe in some of the challenge stages), it's a terrain destruction sandbox. Which is a weird direction to take this franchise (would have made more sense for something like Wario). Maybe they want to very clearly differentiate this from the next 3D Mario which is probably coming for the holidays.

It is what it is, but I'm still disappointed I'm not getting a proper 3D DK platformer. We've only ever had a single one, there's much more potential there.

a lot of nintendo simps in here defending the odd moves they are making after dk we have nothing first party until October.
So 6+ announced exclusive games (so far) for 2025 is not enough? Remind me again how many Sony has had since April.

Anyways DK looks Amazing. They were definitely holding back a TON of content. Can't wait!

After mario kart it should be clear that nintendo is not gonna spend money on graphic dude.

Without even seeing the whole game I'd argue there is a ton more platforming here than what we had in DK64. DK64 was an awful mishmash of context sensitive movement options and needless backtracking. DK64 was nothing like the Country titles that came before it. At least this carries on things like barrel blasting, roll jumping and Animal Buddy styles of gameplay. I was wishing for more emphasis on realistic swinging and climbing gameplay but what they are offering here looks like a natural evolution to the series.

finished watching it, lol amazing

The Odyssey team is all over this game, they love Pauline. It's like they are now aiming for a total lore reboot by starting with her and DK at the beginning, pre-Mario, so I wonder where that will lead in future games.

Their pairing gives me Ralph + Vanellope vibes but it definitely adds a needed extra layer of weirdness that it felt lacking before. What's the deal with this not showing up at their previous demos... late-development retooling of the story to add her, or did they just remove her from all the previous things as a planned reveal?
