Revolution - Bringing Genres Together

Killjoy, this is probably the clearest and most indisputable point of all time. If you're sitting here saying "sports games might finally be fun", you're an idiot. If you're sitting here saying "Madden might get fun", totally different story.

Now because "Sports games can be fun" tailors it to a persons opinion on a sports game. A person who doesn't like football won't think it is fun, but another might love it. Therfore, it can be fun. The "can" word gives it the option of having funess or not, depending on the person.

And it applies to games on a game-by-game basis.

If I understand you correctly, if something is wide enough, it has to be fun, right? Burials is a pretty wide category. You have mob hits, you have funerals, you have animals putting their feces in the ground -- a LOT of stuff. So since it's such a wide category, it must have always been fun?

I know it's a ridiculous example, but I'm just trying to understand how you decide whether something has always been fun or not.

What the-- I'm sorry, that example is too silly to apply here.

Sports, in general, is an activity people who participate in do so to have fun (in friendly or competitive ways). Like games. If you're forced to do it, it's likely you're not going to have fun. So sports, the category, has always contained things which are fun.

But that's what this discussion is about! Sports, as a category, have always been fun. To get slightly more specific... sports games, as a category, have always been fun. It just depends on who it appeals to. Like you said. We're arguing about the differences between using "can" and "appeals to", really. But let me expand it. Say monkeyrun went and for the first time he enjoyed Madden with the Rev controller. Well, finally it appealed to him. So sports is proving, once again, it has always been fun. You just need to find what niche appeals to you as an individual. That's why if you're specifically talking about things on a game by game basis, the story changes.

The thing is, when i say they can be fun, its because undeniably, there are people who have fun playing sports. But at the same time, another person really might not like sports at all.

Since we're on the topic of sports games. Here's what I want to see:

Tennis - move around the room to move your player, hit the ball like the controller was your racket. You can put topspin, lobs, etc on the ball. Just like the real think. Don't like to move around that much? Make a ping pong game.

Bowling - Same idea, walk foward and bowl. Put some spin on the ball with your wrist. If you want to go the full effort, strap a 15 lbs weight to the thing. Knock those pins down!

Billiards - Move back and forth to aim at the ball you want, pull back and push forward to shoot it.

Bow Hunting - Same idea. Aim at an animal, pull back to give some tension, let go of the button to let go of the bow string. Could be used in any game as a weapon.

Foosball (my favorite) - Use two controllers to controll two rods of the foos table. Move them back and forth and turn your wrists to shoot the ball.

Tons of good ideas like this, could do the same thing for Darts, Bocce Ball, Horseshoes, etc, etc (The last few may not be "sports" but they do air that stuff on ESPN ;).

Oh my God, a Billiards game would be fucking AWESOME on the Rev controller.

That is definitely going in my memory banks.

Therefore, Madden "can" be fun, it may just need a certain person, or a certain addition to the game "can" make it fun. I wouldn't say its guaranteed to be fun though.

So, how about those genres comin together eh?

EDIT: Oh billiards! What about Ulitmate Frisbee Rev? I would be the only one to buy it.

Nothing is guaranteed. Neither is your life. Which I am about to take away! Like some sort of ninja.

Billiards! Man, I never thought about that before. That shit would be UNBELIEVABLE. Think about it!

I just figured out what could be the perfect FPS control setup.

Movement - Analog Stick
Aiming - TV controller :D
Fire - B trigger
Second Fire - A button
Action - Z1 trigger on the analog stick
Crouch - Z2 trigger on the analog stick
Recharge ammo - make a movement with the controller upwards and backwards (like if you were recharging a shotgun with one hand). No buttons involved.
Zoom in and out - just move the controller forth and back, no needed buttons here either.
Change weapon - control pad
You could hit with big weapons making the movement to hit with the but of it, in diferent ways.
One more thing, if you are not pointing at the TV, the weapon doesn´t appear, and the arm and weapon move following the movement of your arm (well, the controller movement).

Woah... I´m really eager to play a FPS in the Revolution, and FPS never were an important genre for me!

Stop derailing the thread! I want everyone to orgasm at the possibility of a Sin and Punishment/Mario 64 crossbreed and explain to me what AntiGrav is. Now!

Here’s my take on how it can be used:

Shooters, strategy games, board games, etc. really don’t need an explanation, just point and click. For many games like this, only the pointer will be needed, FPS will need the analog stick.

Racing/Vehicle games – A standard controller with the pointer inserted (like the IGN mockup) could open up a world of options for racing games. Essentially, it’s then a standard controller with motion tracking and pointing. Imagine a game like F-Zero or Ridge Racer. Turning the controller would allow you to power slide. For a motorcycle, tilting it left or right would turn you. Imagine a StarFox where you’re tilting and shooting it all at once.

Action/Adventure – For Mario, I think the pointer alone will be used. Imagine on a TV, Mario replaces the arrow of a computer mouse or crosshairs of a FPS. All of his movement would be controlled with the pointer, much like the StarFox Arwing is controlled. The A button jumps, and the trigger punches/kicks. The question of the camera arises, but perhaps it could use an auto-tracking camera, where the D pad moves/resets it. Imagine the mini games in Mario 128 will be ridiculously entertaining.
For Zelda, once again, I imagine the IGN mockup to be used. The C stick could theoretically be replaced with the pointer. To activate the pointer and thus move the camera, the left shoulder button must be held down, release it and the camera stays in place. Any type of first person view in Zelda (boomerang, slingshot, bow & arrow) the camera would be controlled by the pointer providing much greater accuracy. I could also see this working with a situation where Link is riding on his horse in one direction and shooting in the other or in Halo when a warthog is heading in one direction and your shooting in another. The pointer would then control the vehicle, while the analog stick aims your gun.

A Win, Lose, Draw game would finally be fun as a party game. As a Bonus...the Rev would hook up to each opposing team's DS to hide the answers and stuff.

Action-shooter titles are going to be mind-blowing now that you actually get to *AIM* (think RE4)

FPS' have gotten way way boring since all you do in them currently is move your static HUD cross-hair over the enemy 'selecting' him over and over...

With the RevO we can see gameplay EXACTLY like the KillzonePS3 demo, where shit is hitting the fan --- no more scanning the environment as a floating camera

A distinction exists only in the context of this discussion. monkeyrun said sports games might finally get fun. But they've always been fun, they've always appealed to certain people. Just not monkeyrun.
lol. I believe things has become a little bit too phylosopical :lol
