RIP Tom Petty, dead at 66 after cardiac arrest. TMZ and CBS reporting.

RIP. What a great musician, just saw him in May, he seemed great.

What a sad loss, sending thoughts to his family and friends.

Damn it.

Tom Petty was one of the first "adult" musicians I ever liked as a really little kid (the others being the band the Cars and Peter Gabriel). I loved his music (with the exception of Don't Come Around Here No More as that music video scared the HELL out of me as a kid).

Rest in peace, Tom.

THIS MAKES ME SO FUCKING UPSET OH MY GOD NOOOOOOOOOO

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers was the first band I ever saw live. My entire family grew up with their music. My father and I based our entire musical learning on Tom Petty songs. He's going to be absolutely crushed. I'm ready to weep. Absolutely heartbreaking.

This is really tough. I just saw him live again this summer and he was great. I'm a huge fan of his music. It's just..wow...what a legend.

My SO got to see him on his return to Gainesville show. She saw it for free, no less. The Strokes opened. Stevie Nicks came out. Gainesville gave him the key to the city. He played a forever long set.

I had to work that night. Never had the chance to see him.

I saw him a few years ago and he absolutely killed it. The guy played for nearly three hours without a break and looked like he just loves life. This is going to be a tough one on my parents too. Shit day for a lot of people.

In December, Petty told Rolling Stone that he thought this would be the group's last tour together. He said, "It's very likely we'll keep playing, but will we take on 50 shows in one tour? I don't think so. I'd be lying if I didn't say I was thinking this might be the last big one. We're all on the backside of our sixties. I have a granddaughter now I'd like to see as much as I can. I don't want to spend my life on the road. This tour will take me away for four months. With a little kid, that's a lot of time."
