Risk of Rain (Steam): Side-scrolling Binding of Isaac

Trailer!

RISK OF RAIN! It's the platformer roguelike with local and online co-op! It just came out on Steam! It's £6.99! It's really good fun, guys! Also, there's a demo!

Basically, while I haven't unlocked more than the Commando class yet, it's a whole ton of addictive fun to just roll around in. It really calls to mind the progression of The Binding of Isaac, with its randomised item lists and enemy encounters, though you're a lot more manoeuvrable in this game with a dodge-roll that makes you invulnerable, and plenty of ropes to climb up and out the way of marauding creatures. You can play with keyboard or controller, and it detected my 360 pad perfectly (though there aren't any button prompts yet).

The game also has actual lovely music.

Recommended! Did anyone else pick this up?

Just tried the demo and instantly added it to my wishlist. I'm tempted to outright buy it but I already have enough games at the moment and there is a sale coming up. I'll definitely buy it by the end of the year either way.

Lord British asked me to copypasta this from the main Steam thread, so here goes:

Time played: 1 hour, 14 minutes (got to second level on my 20th try)

Wow, it's been a while, eh? Considering that the last game I reviewed like this was Binary Domain last year, I really have been slacking off on the impressions department. However, I won Risk Of Rain in a Twitch stream's giveaway raffle yesterday, and the game is pretty much brand new, so I felt that I had to play it and give you guys some first impressions of the title. So, well, here goes.

Risk Of Rain is one of a growing number of retro-styled, action-led "Roguealikelikes" in the same vein as Rogue Legacy and Teleglitch (oh boy, do I have some impressions of THAT game for you!), with seemingly randomized levels teeming with randomly-spawning hyper-aggressive enemies and randomized loot. Oh, and permadeath, because what kind of Rogue clone would it be without that? Where RoR differs is that it was definitely built to be played in co-op, and can be played online by up to 4 players at any time, according to the stream I was watching that awarded me the game. Stupid cool. Add to that the 12 or so classes you must unlock to be able to play as, each with different weapons and abilities, and you'll be at this for some time if you want to play to completion.

Now, I said that there were 12 classes, but you only start out with one unlocked - the Commando, armed with a shotgun, SMG and rifle, and a forward roll that both gets you clear of enemies for a second and grants temporary invulnerability. I soon find out that I'm going to need to make use of all of those weapons and abilities, because the enemies, even early on, come at me thick and fast. Well, some of them come at me just thick, while others come fast, small, flying, and electrocuting. Those goddamned jellyfish. AAAaaaaarrgh. Especially the boss one, he's a cunt. It doesn't help that all your abilities have short cooldown periods (your main weapon doesn't, which is the smallest of mercies), and must be used accordingly. It certainly makes for more intense, thoughtful and tactical combat mechanics than you usually see in a Roguelikealike these days, and gives the game a unique flavour.

At the beginning of any given stage, the game tells you what you must do - "Find the Teleporter". it quickly becomes imperative that you do so quickly, for the longer you take, the harder and more ferocious the game's enemies will become, usually resulting in a quick permadeath and premature Game Over. However, it's only once you find the teleporter and activate it that the fun really begins, since that both gives you a 90-second "survive" timer and summons the stage boss, as well as increasing enemy spawns! And even after the 90 seconds runs out, you still have to defeat the boss and all of the remaining enemies to clear the level and be able to teleport the hell outta there. No, nothing about this game is easy. Nothing at all.

It's a good thing that you can buy - not find or loot, buy - extra weapons and items from various randomized dumps with gold you get from either small canisters strewn across the map, or, more lucratively, killing enemies. How strangely capitalistic for a game where the whole premise is that monsters are falling from space, and you're humanity's last hope - you'd think they'd just give them to him as a freebie. The bigger the enemy, the more moolah you get - and that goes for experience points as well, which are collected in much the same way, and serve to level up your character, giving them more HP, endurance, attack power, and so on.The interplay between these elements and the relentless enemy onslaught becomes more important the longer a level takes, since there's a dramatic tension between levelling enough to defeat the largest enemies and getting that teleporter online so that the level eventually stops getting harder and harder, until at some point even your over-levelled self can't keep up and you die. Again. That said, if you beat a level, you take everything you've earned/bought with you, but if you die, you lose everything, so that's a great incentive to play smarter, rather than harder.

I should say at this point that i only played the game solo; I haven't tried the online mode yet. The Twitch stream had a four-player co-op game going on, though, and what I watched seemed to play smoothly and without any disconnects or lag. I might try some online play later, if I can convince some friends to buy the game. The game's not exactly a looker, though, so they might take some convincing, but I'll try.

I hope I've done some convincing here, too. RoR is boss, and comes highly recommended.

Play again?: Yes, undoubtedly.

Also, I dunno about comparing it to The Binding Of Isaac, which plays more like a randomized Legend Of Zelda to me. I'd rather compare RoR to Teleglitch for their similarly pixel-artsy and unforgiving nature, myself.

I didn't realize that the trailer was muted while I was watching it and the music playing was from the other link in the op. It sounds way better with that one and pretty much synced with it as well. You guys should try it

Level 6?! I can't get past level 2, unless you mean experience levels, that is.

The BoI comparison comes from the item list and combat focus, but I see what you mean.
RoR has nowhere near the number nor variety of items as BoI. But then, I wouldn't expect it to...yet.

Nonetheless, Isaac and RoR are completely different experiences in my opinion.

I followed this when it was on Greenlight, wishlisted it as soon as it hit Steam. I would have bought it but I got Valdis Story not too long ago so gotta finish it first (not to mention I also got Teleglitch to finish and I'm crap at that game D:).
I didn't even know this had coop though, anyone tried it ?

Having played it for around ~5 hours now this game is very fun. The upgrades are similar to the types of things you'd pick up in Binding of Isaac, and some of the more powerful ones are a blast to use. I've only unlocked one of the additional characters, and it is quite a bit different from the character you start with.

Still, it's kind of sad that after 5 hours I've only managed to unlock one extra class and I still can't beat level 2 (I survived the 90 second timer and killed the boss, but I couldn't finish off the final 7 enemies before dying...)

If you like roguelikes I'd say it's probably worth the while, though I haven't been able to get far enough into the game to make a full judgment on that. Maybe I'll try the easy difficulty.

This game is so great. I almost beat level 4 through sheer luck and running back and forth and in circles.

Still only an hour in, lots to go still.

Edit: Damn some of you are having lots of trouble. Just leash all the enemies around, turn and spam the commando's w as soon as it's up, then keep running in a direction. If you ever have to turn around and go through all the enemies that are following just roll past them all as you're immune to damage then. It'll take you like 3 minutes to clean up all the enemies after the gate's 90 seconds, and yeah that will probably make it harder later, but at least you beat it. The key is just finding the gate ASAP, and like all rogue-likes hoping for good item luck.

Kickstarted this baby and so glad I did. Oh man is it riotously fun. And I am so bad at it. Haven't beaten the second level once yet, but I'm getting there. The just...abilities and items and bosses and everything. Music, atmosphere. It's all so great.

Was praying someone would make an OT of this as it deserves a LOT of attention. Especially since it's $10 and I've already had more fun with it than games I spent 4 or 5 times as much on this year.

Does this have terrible systems like having to unlock stuff for future playthroughs or any sort of persistence whatsoever? If so I am not interested.

Fuck that, the satisfaction of unlocking stuff is glorious to me. I love a new thing becoming available and surprising me and trying it out and everything. So awesome.

One of the best games I've played this year; surely, it's in top 10 of games of which I experienced to enjoy. But I'm a sucker for such things, so count me biased. God, I wish I was good at writing stuff, so I could develop my feelings on this one.

Spent hours playing tonight.

I'm gonna be a total shill and say, it is worth FULL $10. I would snatch this shit up as soon as possible. Don't get me wrong, as a cheapo myself I have about 20 games on my Wanted List that are less than $20 but...jesus, I don't think I've become this addicted this quickly to a game in ages. Maybe Binding of Isaac.

The Binding of Isaac wins over Risk of Rain in one thing though: procedurally generated levels. That's the biggest issue I and people I was playing with have with the game. After 5th walkthrough it's not that fun to play the same maps all over again. Now, I see they can't do anything about it, so I hope new levels come soon enough. I'm even ready to pay if they will be in a form of DLC. On a side note: God, I love art design they came up with.

Yeah. You see the little dudes and murderlate them, then go to the lore page and look at their entry and it's like "Hoooooooly shit that is terrifying"

I'm not TOO turned off by lack of procedurally generated levels to be honest. I would certainly welcome the inclusion and it may extend other people's play a bit more but having such large and open levels and trying to find where the teleporter is this time is still fun to me. A lot of times my plays are about the strategy of the level set up and getting shit to spawn in certain places. Like with the enforcer, since I know the area around the teleporter I try to decide where will be best to set up my shield and such. I can completely understand people getting tired of doing the same level, it's just not an issue for me. Kinda like how maps in stuff like Payday 2 or Gunpoint or whatever will always be the same but they keep me coming back and playing them.

What characters have you guys unlocked and which ones have been your best runs?

I unlocked the Engineer and have been using him like CRAZY. I've gotten farther with him than any other character. Half of that was based on lucky items, but I managed a 44 minute run out of it and unlocked a ton of other shit. Other than that, the Enforcer is pretty sick too when you can find a good place to hole up and tank shit. Back to wall, shield up. Best item for him I've found is the banner because when you're waiting for the teleporter you level like mad and having fast heals and even faster shots is fantastic.

I tried Huntress while the game was in beta and I absolutely loved her. Nonstop kiting and teleporting; I see her as the straight better version of Commando. As of now I have enjoyed Acrid the most. Absolutely devastating when fighting slow durable bosses; gotta keep stacking poison. Sniper is fun and quirky, but playing him solo is nigh impossible — you should have someone managing the agro, like Enforcer.

Right now all i've got is the
Enforcer, whom I hated at first but kept on playing with in a multiplayer session. His shield bash + gas grenade combo is excellent for letting other classes put the work in, and fortifying a position with your shield down and a higher rate of fire shotgun feels incredibly badass. Super risky, because if something jumps around you then you're in trouble, but so worth the danger. I feel like a wall with which enemies fall in front of as they try their damndest to get past me. But they never will, for I am Lieutenant Motherfucker. I really want the Huntress Class, but I've only got 4 monster logs so I'm a long way out from that happening :(

Seems like Bandit is much the same. He takes some REAL work to use, though I can see him being pretty boss in multi-player. Fire from distane, throw dynamite when close, smoke bomb then dyanmite to break and headshot to reset your Smoke Bomb cooldown. Unfortunately...that's a hell of a lot of micro. Dunno if I will ever get good with him. Never know though, I'll certainly give it the old college try.

Loving this game. Bloody hard but so much fun. Haven't come close to getting psat the first teleporyet yet.

Think I'll try out some coop tonight. Would be nice to unlock a different character.

Longest run is 7 minuets I think

edit - turned the difficulty down and that did it. made it to level 4 (some lava/magma level, dont go down!) and completely screwed myself over. Unlocked a bunch of stuff though. Game kicks so much ass. I just have to turn it off when I die out of frustration haha.

Welp, found my two favorite classes.
Huntress and Engineer. Huntress is a glass cannon, but my winning run with her was based on getting Soldier's Syringes and the Heal on Hit items. Multiples. Oh my god nothing could drop my life quick enough if I was hitting them.
Trying to unlock more now instead of beating the game as I've done it twice now with two separate classes. It's fun to try and figure out how to unlock them based on clues in the unlockables section. Haven't even found that damn janitor.

Also, has anyone else found weird things in levels? Like, just...small odd things that may not actually have to do with anything? For example, on the 3rd stage ice level that's the real big bridge and valley, if you go all the way to the top left...there's just a random fence there with a bush or two. And in the magma core in one of the cubbies there's some weird...idol thing. Just really random, interesting stuff.

God I really hope this game has post-content updates and releases. Hell, I'd buy goddam DLC for it if it meant another character or more bosses or more levels. This is an unrealistic amount of fun,
