I kind of want one of those for posterity, but I also don't want to be one of those weirdos that collects newspapers

Hey guys, remember when back in May when this first broke and a bunch of people were saying how the mayor probably has the police in his pocket and how if they found the video they'd make sure it never saw the light of day?

Good times. :)

We also have a bunch of people who say the Police are out to get Ford. Crazy knows no logic.

This thread has kept me entertained at work all day. Bravo.

I don't think Ford can survive as mayor with all this drama now. I know he won't resign but he should.

Psh. Only because the commish saw which way the political wind was blowing and knew this was his chance to make a big splash, run for office.

I've seen The Wire, mang.

Nice job, guys.

Sorry folks, as I said before, we're probably going to have to wait for the video to be shown in court. And our court system is slooowwww.

Hope y'all have lots of patience.
He'll be re-elected before the video is shown in court. :(

I like how when Doug Holyday was asked about the Rob Ford thing, he was like "this shit ain't my problem anymore"

You know what makes me scared?

What will happen to mississauga when McCallion leaves...sure, she has a little kickback trial going on now, but given the shenanigans in other cities (Vaughn, Ottawa, Toronto) I am honestly scared shitless what will happen to this city...

No worries she'll be mayor until 132

The press should ambush Hudak. He let Ford campaign with him and stand beside him when he clearly knew that guy was on crack and other criminal activity. Same for Flaherty.

As other London, Ontario residents have already said, Rob makes our city's issues seem trivial in comparison.

And that's the saddest thing about it.

Toronto is the 4th or 5th most populous city in North America. The city should NOT be the butt of jokes for the entire damn continent. It's one thing for a small city like London to have political shenanigans but nobody outside of London itself is really going to point and laugh. When even people as far south as Texas are tweeting and laughing at you, your city has an image problem.

The worst is the Ford suoporters calling in to talk shows saying how they'll still vote for him. "He's done a great job, saving money, who cares about his personal life?"

I love how they act like him having organized crime figures in positions of power is no biggie.

I'd intrigued to know what is said on the phone message. Is it exclusive to a particular riding? How does one receive said robocall?

EDIT: Also, holy shit at the mod who finally hit the killswitch on Willectro!

Well, the cops did see Ford receive parcels from Lisi dozens of times, and not once did they pull him over and search his car, despite having complete legal authority to do so... (resulting in the police having zero actual evidence to lay any sort of charges against him despite months of surveillance.)

Either the media blew the case open before it was ready, or the cops were treating the mayor with kid gloves.

Wow are the robocalls an immediate reaction to today's news? That would take such fucking balls, although I guess that would fit the profile

I don't understand, don't corrupt politicians only meet face to face with mob kingpins in the movies? Why the fuck is Ford directly exchanging words, handshakes, money, and drugs with these kind of people in broad daylight? Does he just not give a shit?

Just going of the little I know about him, this seems to be the answer.

I'm sorry, what? Complete authority to detain the mayor and search his vehicle....based on what?

A) We still don't even know the extent of the investigation. Your judgment is ridiculously premature.

And B) I'm pretty sure I have a better grasp of police powers to search than you do, and I'm saying that there's no grounds for a detention and vehicle search based on the scenarios you describe above.

Not to be naive - honestly i dont know the answer - but I would think, for example, if cops saw me tossing two empty vodka bottles and driving away, after watching me for sometime, they could say they had probable cause to stop me? Am I wrong about that?

Fuzzy

I would bang a hot farmer!
Yeah, the only reason the cops would've had to stop them was for drinking and driving but it would've been stupid to tip their hand that they're under surveillance for something so minor when they were trying to build a larger case.

I don't understand this thread. No, it's not illegal to use drugs, it's not illegal to be an addict. It's illegal to be in possession of them. Maybe Canada has a shitier burden of proof, but in the US, in order to get a possession conviction, a video and circumstantial evidence is not enough. You need the substance they were in possession of and you need to chemically test it for illegal drugs. Just because something may look like cocaine or crack is not enough to be charged with anything. I'm not saying they don't have proof, but just saying a video and some survaillance isn't enough to be convicted of anything. They probably do have more, otherwise they wouldn't have announced all of this. Either way, I find it interesting that people care more about his crack usage than his drunk driving.

I don't know if we know what the timing is on that event. The surveillance team may not have been able to follow Ford when he left that site in order to be in a position to retrieve the bottles, and when they found the bottles, Ford might have already been lost to the surveillance team. There are several possible variables there.

But in broad strokes, yes, they probably would have had grounds for an impaired arrest that day, and that is the one thing that I find somewhat concerning.

But that is an issue that has come up before, when police are conducting major investigations and see possible drinking and driving activity. There is obviously a serious public safety concern with that activity, but if you pull the trigger and so the impaired arrest, you may blow the larger investigation.

Cops were in a real corner. Because the Mayor is involved, any action or inaction is viewed as either pro, or anti Ford. You have people on the radio saying the cops are setting Ford up, and people saying they're giving him preferential treatment.

My big problem is that the mayor is associating with criminals and drug dealers. He wrote Lisi a recommendation, he's hired Don Bosco guys into his office. Did he do that because they have a video on him that can harm his career? He pushed for private garbage. Did he do that because someone has dirt on him? Who knows. The mayor seems to have a lot of people that are holding the skeletons in his closet.

I worked for a financial institution once, and they pulled my credit rating, because people with unmanageable debts can't handle money. There are all sorts of situations in which having skeletons means your ability to perform in your job is compromised.

I don't want a mayor whose stings are being held by drug dealers.

First of all, he doesn't do it in broad daylight. Second of all,

Not sure if you're really asking, but yes, the standard is the same in Canada.

But either way, you don't throw this sort of resources into an investigation chasing a straight possession charge.

Without knowing the full story, I think that TPS has actually handled this fairly well. Blair has conducted himself fairly and with integrity, not being pushed by the media, but not remotely covering for Ford either.

And there sure as hell haven't been any real leaks about the investigation as it has been going on. They kept this pretty well sealed as best they could.

Agreed. The video itself is secondary. What has been important these past six months has been all the rest that it has revealed about Ford and those he associates with.
