So, how is Rockemith for learning? I know a couple cords and thats pretty much it, with the steam sale going on i figured id give it shot.

I also have this guitar that i traded a while back for an Ipad 2

I'm learning from scratch (I know nothing) and in my personal experience, using the "Lessons" mode, it's interesting, but you'll still need to look for other sources too. I mean, there's a video on every lesson, but sometimes it doesn't make it clear exactly what you have to do, so sometimes I feel the need to watch it again. And then, after the videos comes the part that makes you put what you saw in practice, and after you complete this, comes the full practice song.

It teaches you techniques like tremolo, palm muting, bends, sustains, etc. But after the fourth practice song it starts to get hard. Some exercises are hard as f*ck, actually. For example, this is the song of the fifth lesson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vWJA2p-ADU8&feature=youtu.be&t=4m20s It's ridiculous. I mean, even someone who plays well will have a hard time playing a song they don't know at that speed. Now imagine how frustrating it is to someone that don't really know how to play a guitar like me...

At least it's not mandatory, but damn, it's frustrating. At the beginning I was planing to reach maximum score on every lesson before moving to the next one. I gave up on that plan.

Beautiful guitar, btw. I love that style and color!

Mine's one of these:

An Yamaha SGV300. I know it looks weird, but I don't have conventional tastes, so I like it. :3

It takes pretty serious dedication but it's a powerful learning tool if you stick with it. I found the gradual increase in difficulty more effective for learning bass than guitar, for what that's worth. I've been told the game can be finicky about recognizing notes when played on a guitar with a floating bridge where tuning tends to be a little less precise, so I opted for one without with a tremolo bar for learning purposes.

Good luck!

Gorgeous guitar. I'm also using a les paul-shaped Gretsch, but it's not as sexy as that. I think you got the best end of the iPad trade by a long shot!

Tip: If it's anything like mine, switch to the bridge pickup when playing because the game seems to pick the notes up better that way. I also find D'Addario strings sound better than Ernie Ball for some strange reason (clearer, less 'jangly' sounding). Just some weird foibles I've found with my Gretsch during my Rocksmith career....

Not seen one of these before, that's really cool-looking. Yamaha make some underrated guitars - I had a Pacifica (their strat) a few years ago and it was really good.

If both of you joined because of the Steam sale, I would recommend getting the OG Rocksmith as well, and paying for the transfer pack that moves most of the original Rocksmith tracklist into 2014.

Can anyone guess as to why, only on certain songs, Master Mode will only bring back notes when I play poorly, but not fade out notes when I do well? At one point I brought a song up to 108% Mastery and there's maybe one part I regularly get tripped up at, but the rest of the song isn't faded out like it should. Obviously 100% accuracy is unlikely just because the game isn't always accurate in detecting notes, but I consistently get 99% accuracy and nothing is fading out. It only seems like a couple of songs and I'm not sure there's like some per-song settings that you can do for Master Mode or not.

Thanks! It's a limited edition made around 2000 to celebrate one of their first models from the 60's. I bought back then not knowing about this fact. :p

I'm playing on the PS4, unfortunately. One thing I've noticed is that this game is too focused on Rock. I like rock, I really do, but I lean more to the black side on my musical tastes, you know, stuff like Jazz and Soul. Do you guys know a good pack for that?

Jazz, sadly not.

There is a funk pack (includes Rick James, Parliament) and James Brown's 'Living in America' just appeared last week. A complete list of all RS DLC can be found on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_downloadable_songs_for_Rocksmith

It's only been like a month since I got my Ibanez, but that didn't stop me from buying this thing.. It's pretty sweet.

Yamaha FX370C

I'm always happy to view more guitar porn!

I will suck at it, but I'm gonna get that BTBaM song. Love the long solo in that one, it builds up over such a long time.

Woah, was not expecting Against Me! I was a huge fan of that band when I was in high school. Not a huge fan of that particular song.. or album but I'll get it. Don't care for the other songs.

Clues for July from newsletter:

A trip to ancient Rome, a confusing time, and something missing

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess - two band packs I don't like, two mix packs with low probability of containing something I like.

Flyleaf Song Pack - $9.99

* Flyleaf "Again" - D Standard [Lead] / Drop C [Rhythm] / Drop D [Bass]
* Flyleaf "Cassie" - Drop D
* Flyleaf "Fully Alive" - Drop D
* Flyleaf "Missing" - Drop C

I'm trying to play Rocksmith 2014 on Steam with an old Real Tone cable I got with the original game on the Xbox 360, but it won't work with my Windows 8.1 PC. In game, it says the cable is disconnected. It doesn't show up under Recording Devices. It shows up in the Device Manager as Rocksmith USB Guitar Adapter with a yellow triangle and this error:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

The I/O request was canceled.

Here's what I've tried so far that hasn't worked:
1. Disabling and re-enabling the device.
2. Uninstalling the device, unplugging it, restarting the computer and plugging it back in to reinstall it.
3. Disabled XHCI and Legacy USB modes in my BIOS.
4. Disabled the other USB microphones (HTC Vive & USB Headset)
5. Unplugged the other USB microphones.
6. Plugged the cable into a USB 2.0 and 3.0 port directly on the motherboard.
7. Plugged the cable into a seperately powered USB 3.0 hub, which is plugged into a USB 3.0 or 2.0 port on the motherboard.
8. Plugging my Xbox 360 back in and testing the cord with the original Rocksmith to make sure it's not the cord (it works fine there).

Now after trying a different USB port while typing this, it's not even calling it a Rocksmith cable anymore. It's changed to USB Audio Device with a yellow triangle and this slightly different error:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

{Operation Failed}
The requested operation was unsuccessful.

I would accept it if it was just a faulty cord, but it works fine on my Xbox 360, and I don't seem to be even close to getting it working on my PC. Any advice would be appreciated. I'll provide more information if necessary.

you either have to disable xHCI in the BIOS or use an USB 2.0 Powered Hub

I already tried disabling xHCI in my BIOS, but the only 2.0 hub I have is USB powered. I'll buy a 2.0 AC powered hub and try again.

Edit: I borrowed a 2.0 hub from a friend, and it worked. I'll go buy a AC powered 2.0 hub of my own from Micro Center tomorrow and get to shredding. Thanks for the advice.

Next week:

60's 3 pack featuring White Rabbit by Jefferson Airplane..

I'm hoping for some Peter Green era Fleetwood Mac in there, but we'll see.

60s Mix Pack – $7.99

* The Doors “Love Me Two Times” – E Standard: A446
* Jefferson Airplane “White Rabbit”
* Shocking Blue “Venus”

My first instabuy full pack of 2016 has arrived (and it's only July!)

Pixies 4 pack, including Hey.

I would imagine Debaser and Monkey Gone to Heaven as well, and I requested Wave of Mutilation so obviously have my fingers crossed for that. So many great tunes that it would be hard for them to mess this pack up to be honest...

Is Pixies confirmed? I can't wait. Definitely getting, and I won't be disappointed no matter the songs. And I'm glad Hey is on that, I love the little solo on that.

Wish it was more than a 4 pack. I'm sure Monkey Gone to Heaven is on it too. If I had my choice it would also have Velouria and Alec Eiffel.

Yep, confirmed as a four pack. No further tracks revealed yet, although most people are expecting Debaser/Monkey because they're the best known tracks not in the game yet.

IMO the only thing wrong with this pack is too few tracks, they can't mess up the selection. I was thinking how much i'd love to blast through 'Letter to Memphis' earlier, this band has so many cracking tunes.

Rocksmith just tweeted confirmation of Wave of Mutilation

This message has brought me tears of joy. Thank you good sir Toymachine.

it does make me wonder about Debaser/Monkey though, as that would give us a Doolittle four pack. Maybe we will get a Bone Machine or Dig for Fire or Alec Eiffel etc just to spread the album love around a bit.

Pixies Pack:

Wave of Mutilation
Debaser
Monkey Gone to Heaven
Hey

I was on the money. A first for me!

Roll on Wednesday or whenever SCEE bothers to put content up these days.

Made my first custom song in years because I got tired of waiting for someone else to make it or update the old kinda bad version that was available. Definitely remember why I stopped making them, shit takes up so much time when you want it to be good.

But now I can finally play a good version Welcome Home by Coheed and Cambria, so it was worth it. \o/

Song is up on customsforge if anyone wants to play it.

Can I twist your arm to chart some weird stuff >_>

Variety Pack III - four songs including 'Always With Me, Always With You' by Joe Satriani.

Not a Satch fan myself but a lot of people love it. Will be keeping an eye on the other tracks.

The Dillinger Escape Plan - Baby's First Coffin

Well, there is a pretty highly rated tab for it. Just have to see if I can sync it properly. o_O

No promises, but I'll give it a shot.

Edit: This is goddamn madness. 5/4, 4/4, 11/8, 12/8, 5/8. The time signatures changes more often than I blink and knowing very little about this stuff I don't know if it's accurate or just something the tabber did to easily tab it out.. This will be quite the challenge!

Edit: 1½ hour later and I have come to the conclusion that this tab was not very good. There is a powertab that seems to make a bit more sense with the time signatures, but that won't import and it's impossible to convert it to a usable gp5 file. Sorry, this one was way above my skill. :)

Hmm how about Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants?

This seems much more doable, basically synced up the entire track in a third of the time it took to get through half the other song. Tab seems good as well so I might have a playable version done tonight, won't be able to playtest it though since it's too late for that, so can't be sure if the tab is good or not until tomorrow.
