Federer's service game takes me back to the days of 90's when there were several guys on the tour who had these devastating serves. It was almost impossible to break these ace-machines' serves. I'm thinking Richard Kraijeck, Samprass, Ivanisevic...

Well Karlovic has that throne now, of course in contrast to those guys he has nought, absolutely zilch, else to his game, which is why he loses a match with 55 aces. His coach should've told him that he has to play the opponent's serve game as well.

If Federer wins this and another Grand Slam, will that give him the #1 ranking?

Yeah I think so, it might depend on the pre-Wimbledon tour, but of course Nadal has withdrawn from Queens, so if Federer wins Wimbledon he should be back at 1. Of course he might be spent after this win and not have the drive to take the grass cup as well.

Right. It's just not the same anymore though. You could've mentioned Roddick too, who has the fastest serves ever, but somehow his serving is not that effective. I haven't seen any of Karlovic's matches though, does he do that consistently or was that just that one Davis Cup match?

The 55 ace loss was in this French Open. He does that constantly, yes, his matches go to tie-break so often you wouldn't believe it. Boring guy.

Yeah, sounds like a one trick pony. Philippoussis 2.0?

Yeah...I don't pick a racket in an year or more...hey, at least Grand Slam Tennis is coming out for the Wii soon ;P

I haven't played probably in about 4-5 years. If I picked up a racket now, I'd be like a total n00b.

I think he'll skip Halle. But suppose Roger wins today, the rankings would be:
1. Nadal 13140
2. Federer 11070

If Federer defends his Halle title, and Nadal skips Queens (which he did), then the rankings before Wimbledon would be:

1. Nadal 12725
2. Federer 11070

If Federer wins Wimbledon, he gains a further 800 points, giving him 11870. Nadal would basically need to lose around 1000 points for Federer to take over. This means Nadal would need to lose at semifinals stage (900-2000=-1100). That means if Nadal makes the final he'll barely keep his #1 ranking.

(barring any mistakes I made here)

Doesn't Nadal lose some points from the olympics as well?

I think they will fall off in August.

Also, this is not the worst final ever. Ferrero-Verkerk (RG 2003) was much worse, for instance.

To be fair on Söderling he hasn't made too many unforced errors. Hasn't choked, per se.

Stats:

Unforced Errors: Söderling: 22 , Federer: 20
Winners: Söderling: 28, Federer: 57

I like to see Federer dominate, but this match has been unsatisfying. Soderling didn't put up much of a fight.

edit: Federer choking?

too bad robin didn't try to get the 1st serves before. A little late for that imo. Gratz Federer, Söderling will come back in Wimbledon :D
