Romney: Olympic prep "disconcerting". Cameron: London isn't "middle of nowhere" Utah

Jeremy Hunt, Culture Secretary

The person I care about more is Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee, who said London was the best prepared city he had ever seen. When we have the opening ceremony tonight and we tell the world that eight of the world's top 10 sports were either invented or codified in Britain - and only two in America - I hope Mr Romney is watching.

The width of a football net is defined as the distance between two of the trees of the park right around the corner from where I live. I don't know which two, though.

so if something goes terribly wrong with security or the games does he get to gloat that he was right?

it seems he somehow got his name in the Olympic news cycle no matter what

Can you get a source for that? I can't believe I haven't heard that in 20-odd years.

It's Parkers Piece in Cambridge.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parker's_Piece

I can't remember where I read the thing about the distance of the trees but googling it just says that the rules were posted on the trees around the park. But there are some large evenly spaced trees on one of the sides that I'm assuming are the ones in question.

[edit]My original post is a bit squiffy. I should have said, 'the distance between the goalposts is the distance it is because it's the distance between the trees', not 'is defined as the distance between the trees'. My bad.

What an idiot.

Edit The guy is your stereotypical ignorant American.

Politically, I don't support Romney at all. But his comment about the the London Olympics prep in light of the huge cluster fuck concerning the security arrangements, is perfectly valid.

I saw the CEO of the security corp hired to do the work get grilled by someone in the British parliament. They are charging the UK govt something like 50 million pounds profit for their services, and the questioner was asking if they really are earning it, considering the fact that the military is having to chip in so much, due to the private security firm's poor planning.

Yeah Romney probably had an underlying motive, to remind people how well the winter games he supervised went, but Cameron is just butt hurt. Romney's criticism was valid. And bringing up the fact that SLC is a smaller less isolated place than London, isn't a good retort.

Yeah, we're going to struggle with the Olympics, but it's a very old (non-)city for its population and geographical size. Hopefully most Londoners will keep their cars out of central so all the cabs and buses can zip around a bit quicker. And if I see anyone using those stupid pedal bus things I'm just going to set fire to it*.

Our underground rail network is the oldest, and second most complex, in the world, and has seen woeful underinvestment until recent years. Obviously that's our fault, especially given the disgusting amount of money that finds its way into London and back out to the Caymen islands without contributing to government spending.

I'm sure almost everyone in the country would prefer the Olympics to be hosted in a field in Yorkshire, but they have like one airport up north, right?

*Disclaimer: I'm not going to set fire to any pedal buses.

It really wasn't though, it was badly thought out and badly worded, if he had said "there were some concerns in the weeks leading up but they have been resolved now and we are all looking forward to blahblahblah" then that would have been fine, but he is 2 weeks behind with his news it seems.

G4S sucked, the British Army not so much, the strike was called off (back room deals at a guess) and even cynics like me are actually thinking it might be decent now the suns come out and seeing the fucking huge crowed at Hyde Park.

Cammo's comeback was not a dig on Utah, merely as factual a statement as Romneys "England is a small Island" was.

I say all this as a man who would not cross the street to piss on Cameron if he was on fire.

Cammo's comeback was not a dig on Utah,

I didn't take it that way. It seemed to be some kind of excuse like, the olympics you ran were easier because of the logistics in Utah.

That's probably true, Romney's olympics in SLC were easier to manage than the games in London, but it's not an excuse for the problems in London.

It would be like if someone paid me to paint a 100 foot long fence. And I did an excellent job. And then a friend who is also a fence painter got a contract to do a 300 foot long fence. And if I inspected their work and found sloppiness and areas where the paint wasn't applied evenly, their excuse is, well my fence was longer, so of course it doesn't look as nice as the 100 foot long fence you painted.

Either I made up lies about the Boston Bomber or I fell for someone else's crap. Either way, I have absolutely no credibility and you should never pay any attention to anything I say, no matter what the context. Perm me if I claim to be an insider
To be totally fair UK_Gaf,

Romney does love France much, much more than he barely likes you.

"Russia is our number one geopolitical foe" -Romney.

Seems fairly accurate to me. Russia is the biggest source of the US not getting its agenda through the UN security council. They are protecting the Syrian regime. Who would you nominate ?

Even though we disagree on many issues, we have a lot more bilateral trade with China.

Vied for a tag related to cocks, so here it is.
Speaking of which, what's with all the avatars of Jeremy *unt? Is it a protest against GAF censorship?

I don't know if we'd call it a protest ;)

Have to give it to Cameron on this one anyway, like to see that he didn't back away from the comment and actually bit back at Romney.

I didn't expect a Republican nominee of today's political climate to use such a big word like "disconcerting". Might make him sound too much like a librul commie socialist, using big words like that.

Doesn't matter what Romney said. GAF would shit all over it if all he said was, "Great job, London."

Well, to be fair GAF can only get worked up over things he actually says and does. I'd like to visit this parallel universe where Romney has an ounce of tact though, and see if GAF is still shitting on him.

Why bother? It's much easier propping up a false argument and then bashing that.

It's funny how most of the time British people squabble amongst themselves and think lowly of the country but when they have a common enemy that old chest thumping national pride bubbles to the surface.

I love how someone on the first page of this thread made the "powers that be" joke that Romney is clearly being conspired against. Yep, I'd say so. The conspiracy of his mouth, mind and hands.
The point about that is that they are not intentionally preventing him from being the President but are propping him up to make sure Obama stays where he is.

If you took the piss out of your wife for her lack of cooking skills, that would be fine (ish)..if someone else did it will piss you right off, even it was true

There is something called national pride.

Expect us Brits to be a little annoyed when an archaic monkey from another country speaks down on our nation

On the other hand, if something horrible happens, Romney will look to a lot of (stupid) people like the one who saw it coming.

It's about the word "disconcerting". It sure upset a lot of thin-skinned Brits, didn't it?

And some shouldn't have been allowed to compete in the Olympics after testing positive for banned substances. What a disgrace.

Honestly, if Romney didn't have his millions, he would have never been the nominee.
