RTTP: Octopath Traveler - The Coziest Game Ever Made

vwUVKMq.jpeg

So I just finished replaying this game after initially playing at launch and it holds up beautifully. Everything from the graphics to the music to the gameplay and VA and story. A lot of people complained that the stories of the 8 characters were simplistic and they didn't interwind. From my understanding Part II solves this issue but I can't confirm; will play that soon though. The lightning quick and snappy turn based combat is oh soo good. The crunch and boom and crackling of the weapons and magic and efects are really great quality and feel punchy. The graphics are gorgeous as you cann see. I really have been spoiled by this games style and all other HD-2D games now look stale/cartoony in comparison to me...

And even though some Characters are a bit weaker than others, they all have unique abilities both in combat and outside that make them equally valuable, and in addition the 2 job system in the game works wonderfully to give you near unlimited free reign to mix and match between different combinations and strategies.

Out of all games I have ever played this game for some reasons instills in me a constant feeling of love, longing, nostalgia and heart-ache for the simpler good'ol times. It has the most consistent beautiful music I have ever heard out of 500+ games I've played to finish in my life. I love this game almost like a pet or a family member; its difficult to explain and I know its weird lol.

Some of my favorite tracks from the game:

  • Main Theme
  • My Quiet Forest Home
  • Primrose, The Dancer
  • Tressa, The Merchant
  • Beneathe The Surface
  • Battle II
  • Decisive Battle 2
  • Flamegrace, Guiding light
  • A Settlement In The Red Bluffs
  • For Everything
  • Daughter Of The Dark God
  • The Riverlands
  • The Clifflands

Honestly I could list 20 more. The music is so good!

OP, have you done the endgame content and true final boss? Some more incredible music to listen to there if you haven't yet, though I don't know if I would call some of these endgame bosses cozy, they can be pretty rough!

Yes I have. It was a bitch and took a few tries lol. I wasted so much time trying to follow guides when eventually my own method worked the best.
And I've mentioned the music the the list from the boss

I played it for a few minutes as the hunter girl who is setting out to find her mentor or something. Didn't grab me. Maybe I should give it another try. But I don't think I even understand what. Maybe I don't even remember feelings.

I never finished this game. While it is not perfect, it is the best new IP title of the Switch generation.

Also, nothing was more impressive to me in gaming since Fortnite than HD2D. Square Enix has a gold mine on their hands. They should be licensing the tech to Sega, Nintendo, Capcom, and basically everyone!

I loved the second and liked the first, and while I can see that it certainly has cozy elements, I don't feel it's a cozy game per se. My problem about the stories was less about simplicity but more about how they were divided up. It was like eating a whole bunch of mini chocolate bars but never getting a whole 3 Musketeers. 2's soundtrack has some of my favorite tracks of all time though.

I Am Setsuna is in the running for coziest game as well if you haven't tried it. Play it in late December or early January at 630 in the morning on a Saturday with a cup of hot chocolate. I dare you.

Should give it a try someday. I'm not really that keen on turn-based combat, but maybe this one is an exception. I like the 2.5D artstyle a lot.

If you ever replay it start with Cyrus, The Scholar or Therion, The Thief.
May I suggest Primrose as well? I thought her story was great and one that isn't very common in games (or at least not the ones I've played). My first character ever was Ophilia, her story seems bland at first, but it also had a great ending imo.

I love this game and think it's actually a little underrated, especially after OT2 came out. Its most-criticized element--the story--is something I still feel is stronger than plenty of other beloved JRPGs (like Xenoblade and most Final Fantasys) thanks to the variety and consistent themes that run through each. The battle system is rich in depth while not being overwhelming and it reworks common RPG mechanics like Stealing into more modern approaches. The art was groundbreaking and still looks great. But the best part is the soundtrack, which is incredible. Like top 3 incredible for me.

And the crazy thing is that the second game is even better!

Im playing part II right now ... Im liking it ... the only complaint is that for now is too easy .... Im coasting through all the fights, including bosses... but is very early, only picked up 03 characters until now ... hope it gets more challenging later.

And Im a bit confused on how to solve all the sidequests NPCs gives me ... wasnt able to solve none lol ...

Ehh this game bored me to death. I made it to the start of the chapter 2s and realized I didn't give a single shit about any of these lame characters.

My biggest pet peeve is the field skills. All they did was add an extra layer of tedium. "Oh a locked treasure chest, better come back later with the guy who can open locked treasure chests". "Ok I read everyone's mind in this town, time to switch my party around and talk to everyone again so I can steal from them" etc.

I loved OT. I got a bit addicted to it actually, easily doing 5+ hours sessions. The gameplay loop is so satisfying, between battles and the use of skills in towns. I liked pretty much all the stories except for Haanit's, which I found a bit sparse and difficult to relate to. I also find it hard to enjoy characters who rely on capturing creatures or absorbing magic to get new skills. The game is very well written, and the closest SQEX ever got to their halcyon-days writing in more than a decade.

The game is gorgeous, really cozy if you disable random encounters and just enjoy the beautiful scenery.
And gee, that music. Every battle theme (except maybe Battle III) really gets your blood boiling. If the turn-based system wasn't so snappy and enjoyable, I'd almost regret the battles aren't pure action, because some themes would absolutely deserve it.

The secret final gauntlet culminating with the true final boss is bs and I never managed to beat it, but from what I've seen, it's not really worth it except for the satisfaction of just doing it. No problem, though: the rest of the 80-something hours I spent on the game was totally worth it.

love it, but must admit i reached i think 75% of the story, with all the different characters i mean, and then abandoned for other games;
the icon is still here on my pc dektop, waiting for a new double click, i'm just worried i probably will be stuck don't remembering what to do next

I mean superhot take maybe, I don't know, but I think Xenogears story sucks at least in its delivery. I was bored out of my mind most of the game back on release and how slow and clucky it was. I wasn't very impressed with the gnostic references either since they seemed pretty haphazard, and I was already read up on Gnosticism the year prior to its release. I went in hoping for another Chrono Trigger experience and lost faith in JRPGs for awhile after that. (Bear in mind this is off the back of bangers like FF6, Chrono Trigger, Persona, Wild Arms, Suikoden, FF7, and so on. ) I tried playing it again years ago to reassess but I just can't stand how clunky the game feels. Just like Star Ocean 2, if it's given a well-done modern update it would be a fantastic game, but I'm not willing to lie to myself and make it something more than it was.

Wanted to enjoy the game and it started strong but then revealed itself to have perhaps the most formulaic structure of any RPG ever. Every chapter is set up exactly the same way, and you have to check the same boxes 30 times in a row. Meh.

My opinion is that the game would have been 10x better as an anthology. Like have a tutorial chapter that establishes how these characters all meet. Then each character has like a 5 hour story where they are the star, and you can do them in any order. After you do all 8 stories you unlock the final part of the story that brings it to a satisfying conclusion.

The way this game works takes a ton of content and world building, etc, but makes it all feel weird and disjointed.

I love this game, really reminded me of playing Final Fantasy III (VI) back on the SNES.

My main issue with it still remains
The stories of each character don't come together at the end of their stories, only when you find the secret ending do you find how their stories come together but it's very loose. I still haven't beaten that final boss, it's a son of bitch to get through even with the four secret jobs and everyone on level 70 or higher.

That award goes to Infinity Nikki, but it's an open world adventure, not an RPG.

Octopath is somewhat difficult so that conflicts a bit with coziness.
Added to the list. Thanks.
Should give it a try someday. I'm not really that keen on turn-based combat, but maybe this one is an exception. I like the 2.5D artstyle a lot.
The turned based combat in this game is really instantaneous and very snappy. If you're pressing buttons fast enough it will feel as if you're playing a fighting game. Give it a look on Youtube if you like but its really one of the best.

I suggested them both for gameplay reasons: Sorcery/weaknesses and the ability to open chests and steal hp/sp imo are the best introductions to combat in this game.

Square has trademarked the HD2D name. Anyone can make a game in the same style if they want to. Octopath Traveller is an Unreal Engine 4 game

I tried both. Didn't last long. The pacing is just too lethargic for me, I hate that all the information is repeated million times to me as if Im stupid. I just find it all incredibly unmemorable, dweebish and dull. That said, graphics are nice!

I heard 2 is better in every way than 1. Can I just start 2 then? The games aren't connected, right?
No, in fact the Octopath 2 take place entirely different century since in Octopath 2 there are trains and steam technology.

On topic: I LOOOOOOOVED Octopath 1&2 the game was fantastic and in my opinion the music was Nier level good.

While by no means perfect, Octopath battle system and balancing still needs work. That said, this is the closest in 30 years Square has come to making a new main stream "Series" not named "Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest".

It is very exciting.

Oh, you're absolutely right. Primrose isn't the best in terms of gameplay as your first character. Ophilia's first chapter was an interesting wild ride too. Therion and Cyrus are definitely the best choices.

I played the demo and liked it but had difficult choosing the platform I wanted to play it in so never got around to it.

Eventually I got the sequel during a trip and got to play it. I loved it but haven't finished it. I'd say it has an above average difficult (at least for me) but it's well worth it. I have played it for like 20 hrs and I can tell there is still way more left to play.

Whenever people complain that FF is not turn based anymore, I remind them that games like this exist. Other than branding, I don't know what a game like this could be lacking that FF could bring to the table.

Great game.

The first 30% or so of OT2 is really easy, but everything evens out after that. I still haven't been able to beat the optional final challenge in that one and I consider myself pretty great at JRPGs.

Not Octo 1 related, but Octo 2 has one of my favorite music tracks in any game released in my recent memory.

🎷 🎷 Smooth Jazz. 🎷 🎷
