Sony's PlayStation (PS) 4 may have trouble achieving shipments of 12-16 million units in 2013 as expected, as the related upstream supply chain has not yet received any shipment instructions from the Japan-based vendor, implying a possible delay in the game console's mass shipment schedule, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

Sony originally told its upstream suppliers that it will start shipping its new PS4 game consoles in June with mass shipments scheduled in August, and shipment volumes would have a chance to reach 20 million units in 2013.

Because of handheld devices such as tablets, games consoles, which used to be the mainstream of the gaming market, have seen shrinking demand over the past few years with overall sales dropping 40% from the peak of 55 million units in 2008 to only 34 million units in 2012.
I know nothing about Digitimes. so grain of salt.

Does anyone actually expect Sony to ship 12-16 million units in 2013?

It's gonna be a supply-constrained launch. 720 likewise.

Delayed in Europe confirmed. :(

I'd be sad, but after the P4 Arena fiasco I'm getting a US console. Import ahoy!

Edit: Oh wait, silly shipment figures. Yeeeah, not trusting this. <_<

12 million in 2013? Any of these consoles would be lucky to sell 4 million worldwide in 2013.

How many consoles did Sony and MS sold in their first year this gen? 12-16 million consoles are way too much for just 2-3 months this year after the PS4 launch.

Digit website is satire.
If anything, it will be like the wii situation during the holidays.

I have my doubts of the source, not to mention the article is kind of vague in what the exact ramifications of this will be. Delayed launch in general? Large shortage? I mean I expect there to be a shortage. There's been a shortage of almost every console within months of launch in my surrounding area as long as I can remember, except for the Wii U.

If they get 4 million out by the end of Nov they will be fine. 12-16 is none sense.

Yeah, not believing this. 34 million consoles (Wii, Wii U, PS3, 360) in 2012, but upto 20 million for PS4 between June/August and December?

I'll just say no.

The PS2 didn't come close to pulling these numbers. Nothing except iDevices could pull these kind of numbers and even then supply constraints would stop it.

I was referring more to how Sony won't be able to meet their shipment expectations. PS2 was 500K, right?

i think it's the cross generational games that will affect this next launch the most..

why do i need a ps4, when the majority of it's initial library wont be exclusive?

I don't think any of us expected that rumour ages ago of these numbers being accurate for 2013 anyway. I wonder if this report is based off that early rumour rather than actual info.

Has to be the rumor. I can't find a legitimate place that claims Sony actually had this shipment target.

Well clearly Sony was hoping to notably outsell the Xbox 360's first year in two months.

How, you ask?
