Rumour: Next Xbox to cost twice as much as PS6

Microsoft's future Xbox hardware is unlikely to be any cheaper and, in fact, the latest rumours suggest that the new console could cost twice as much as the PlayStation 6.

This comes courtesy of insider KeplerL2, who has made frequent claims about the new Xbox and PlayStation consoles, based on information he's received from AMD – since it's providing chips to both Microsoft and Sony for the next gen.

Writing on the NeoGAF forums, in the wake of the recent PlayStation 6 handheld rumours, Kepler reiterated a past claim that the next Xbox console will be using a new APU (accelerated processing unit) dubbed Magnus.

Now, however, they add that that the same APU will be used for what they call an Xbox PC. Microsoft has not officially said exactly what new hardware it's making, but has promised a 'portfolio of devices' as well as a fully backwards compatible platform 'not tied to a single store or device.'

If it can play my entire Steam library without meaningful friction, has free multiplayer and delivers enough performance (at least on the level of PS6), I might be in. Saves a lot of money on software alone over the years compared to a traditional console.

Why release it at all if it's twice as expensive? And the current console isn't selling.

I think they're knackered with future hardware at any price if I'm honest.

That said, there is zero chance they would price anywhere close to double what Sony will be pricing their next console at.

Am i missing something, as the quoted Kepler post says nothing about the price estimates?
I had quoted it on my other thread about Xbox console vs Xbox PC.

He is indeed speculating that:

The other way around (e.g supporting PC Steam/GOG/etc games on Xbox) shouldn't really have any legal issues and even on a technical level shouldn't be too hard since it can be run inside a VM.

The big issue with 3rd party store support is the business model, since without the guaranteed 30% cut on every game they need to sell HW at a profit. That combined with Magnus being a fairly large APU could mean the XSX 2 might be twice the price of the PS6 or thereabouts.

It will be an affordable entry point into PC gaming superior in power to what these handhelds can offer. Those all are weak. With a sleek UI built around the controller and potentially can play past generation Xbox games. Worth it.

2x more than the lower end PS6 handheld or highend stationary PS6?
Stationary. It's just his speculation, so let's not take it as fact. May be MS will have some other arrangement to keep the retail price low.

May be offer it bundled with gamepass and a 3 year contract! Lol.

They are already selling their games on PlayStation. Low cost entry to their games? Handled. Do we need a second console in that same category when the need is met? No.

So instead, make a low cost entry to pc gaming. More expensive than a PlayStation, but probably less so than a reasonably built gaming rig. Middle ground. They don't need it to outsell the PlayStation, it just has to make sense in the marketplace.

Well, that was my first thought when Magnus leaked out, "ok, that thing looks expensive".

Doubt it be will twice as expensive as the PS6 though. Idk how they came to that conclusion.

The rumor is they are going for power again and I don't know how they are with hardware but obviously they've mismanaged themselves into a peculiar spot. I still find it hard to believe that it would be double the cost of a ps6 so either the rumors are because PlayStation is actually being smart and efficient and if you listen to Moore's law is dead he has kind of outlined some of this and I've only heard vaguely some rumblings of this but nothing concrete like he has

Personally I think that this will be a rebound generation for PlayStation and it's weird saying that since if you look at their hardware sales and what they're doing, they are quite a rhythm even if it's not the best Sony right at this very moment.

Why would they do that?
As part of the actions to make their gaming business profitable, pretty likely this would mean they wouldn't sell hardware at a loss.

In fact, if it's manufactured by 3rd party PC manufacturers they'll sell it with PC pricing, which means being more expensive to match similar performance because PC manufacturers try to have a profit selling hardware.

MS's idea is to move out from traditional consoles because Xbox no longer sell a shit, but still to continue saying they have (manufactured by others) consoles, when in reality will be console shaped PCs, think the Asus Rog Xbox Ally but also having more powerful home console shaped SKUs and doing it with more brands and not with just Asus.

Xbox consoles already don't sell a shit, so MS won't care if these consolized PCs sell even less. Because their plan is to slowly migrate to become a full multiplatform publisher with Windows/PC as their home platform. Killing their consoles slowly is better for them because scares away less fans.
