Well, from my admittedly limited knowledge of general Game theory, in this hypothetical scenario it wouldn't make any sense politically for NATO to not retaliate with full force, even if that means paying the highest possible cost. Just join and take the risk, it's almost inevitable now. Putin needs to go and sadly the world will be dragged into a war once again. That's one option, it will hurt all counties using gas and oil form Russia which will cause damage to nations for several years, can all counties involved tolerate that? Not so sure.

The other option is to bite the bullet and call Russia's bluff and prepare for war.
