If they can keep the show consistent the whole way through then my god this is going to be the greatest shit ever. They have completely nailed a retro look with the sort of paintbrush(water-colour?) styled backgrounds. It's so good.

I liked the first episode. It was like a re-imagination of the old first episode, as I am sure a lot of people already pointed out in here.

I dont get the hate for the new transformation sequence. Its actually quite good tbh.

It's too different for people, I guess. I enjoy different things and to me it didn't look bad (and I nitpick A LOT on bad CG, too).

I mean, I would understand if it was a really drastic change in artstyle or something. But its a really faithful and well animated CG. Its no tacky or anything. I just don't see whats so objectively bad about it.

I think a lot of people were thinking that it would be as cartoony as it used to be, even though the target audience has changed since. With a different target age group comes a bit more serious of a show. Won't be as many silly antics as there once was.

I think a lot of people just never read the manga to know what to expect. It's a totally different creature.

It's jarring and reeks of being cheap.

I wish they build upon Nephrite like the original series, reading the manga after watching the anime ages ago was very disappointing.

The only issue I have is the palette doesn't match everything else.

The 90's anime had a rhythm to it. Sailor Moon would make a graceful, dance-like move, and then she'd stop and hold for a moment, and the camera (a participant in the dance) would also stop and focus on one point, and then *boom*... partial transformation. A bit more dance, hold, boom. Repeat until she strikes a pose and it's done.

For Sailor Moon Crystal, the camera has ADD and can't seem to sit still. It's moving in and out constantly, it's looking up and down, it's turning it's head side-to-side, it's running circles around the subject, and it even seems to crash into the subject on occasion. It leaves the audience dizzy and confused, makes it practically impossible to tell which movements are Sailor Moon's and which ones are the camera, and there's little-to-no focus on the *boom*.

And it's really obvious why the camera behaves that way. It's because this is CG, so the camera controls cost nothing. They are free. So the kid behind the camera decided to hit all the buttons at once. As a result, there are plenty of "things" going on (enough to make a fangirl squee), but none of them have any weight or carry any impact.

As for the CG itself, there's a very questionable bend in the arm when Sailor Moon first starts moving. It's obviously an animation trick intended to convey speed, but the movement isn't fast enough for that, so it's easy to see through the trick and it just looks like Sailor Moon has noodles for bones.

The model is CG with a face painted on in the style of the rest of the episode, but the CG is painfully obvious (especially in the arms and legs) and clashes with the style of the episode. And the face-paint effect is not complete, so there are occasional gaps in the effect.

Overall, the transformation just says "Goddamnit Toei, why didn't you give this show just a bit more money..."

The reactions in the original anime fit the characters better. This art style seems generic lol.

Also...

No more "Moon Tiara Action!" :(

Put me in the loving the new look overall (including the transformation) camp. Honestly this is like an FFVII remake. When it's something this iconic, no matter how good the new remake/reboot is, some die-hard fans are gonna be upset at the slightest update.

Just finished rereading the manga. I had forgotten how dark and unfiller it is, and really enjoyed it. I loved the crystals animation and background, though I wasnt a fan of the transformations. Super excited that the sailor soldiers will be portrayed as more powerful, unlike their original anime counterpart.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???
And yet they couldn't figure out a way to get it to air on Japanese TV

I'm going to laugh so hard when it comes to Toonami next year and still hasn't aired on Japanese TV

I find it odd as well; however, in Japan one must buy a programming block in order to be featured on television, comparatively to the US.

Toei Animation's management decisions the past few years have been questionable, especially the approval of Saint Seya and Captain Harlock CGI for 30 million dollars respectively, both flops, and yet their anime productions such as One Piece, Pretty Cure! and Sailor Moon are produced at 100k an episode.

Well, CG animation is the future.

You won't be laughing as much as Toei on the way to the bank. :|

It's definitely bizarre, but maybe they figure they can get away with not bothering with TV considering the franchise is anime-royalty?

I'm definitely not undermining the importance of CG animation; however, Toei Animation's denial of further investments towards the Sailor Moon brand, comparatively to approving budgets for high risk projects such as Captain Harlock and Saint Seiya, is rather puzzling as the bulk of their operating income is achieved through licensing endeavors and Sailor Moon would greatly benefit of a greater exposure on Television Stations in Japan.

Just finished watching the pilot episode.

As someone who really enjoyed rewatching the original series with the original Japanese voice actors, this one is a disappointment. Something is really jarring with the art style + pacing and lacks charm when compared to the original.

I guess I'll binge the rest of the series when I'm really bored.

Which is hilarious because CG Cost them that France gig that looks a whole load of butt in CG.

I wouldn't be surprised if Toei wasn't involved in some sort of race-to-the-bottom scam of some description.

lol

Toei Animation already have a girls segment anime called Pretty Cure! with financial backing and licensing agreements with Bandai, maybe they didn't want two competing products in the marketplace? I'm not sure.

Well that apparently didn't stop them from not taking up the stupid CGI version of that thief girl cartoon so that can't be it. Besides, I can think, off the top of my head, like a million ways they could market SMC with Precure and it's not like it'd be any weirder than those bits where they Cross Kamen Rider or Super Sentai when precure for Super Hero Time

True. It truly is puzzling.

On a side note, do we know who holds the video rights for Clamp's work, Kodansha? It's been fairly dormant and yet so many possibilities :(

What are you thinking of?

I mean the videos are out now, arn't they?

The anime or video rights I meant. I'm a sucker for Tsubasa and Cardcaptor. They both deserve a remake/new anime series and I'm wondering who holds those licenses as I'm not positive myself.

Cardcaptor Sakura's anime version was good. There's even less need to change anything about it or do a reboot than there is with Sailor Moon.

Synopses and titles for the next two:

Episode 2:
Ami – SAILORMERCURY
Preview Synopsis 1:
Usagi Tsukino, who has just become a Sailor Guardian, must find her ally sailor guardians as well as the Princess. Her partner, a black cat named Luna, has determined that two of her allies are girls in the same grade of school. One of them is even in the same class – the genius girl who is top of the national rankings, Ami Mizuno. And Ami has just begun to attend the super elite cram school, the Crystal Seminar…

Preview Synopsis 2:
Ami Mizuno, of grade 8 class 5, is a girl-genius who is the top ranking student nationally. But she’s shy and kind of a loner, and doesn’t have any friends. Noticing this, Usagi decides to befriend her. She invites Ami out to have ice cream after school the very next day, but Ami declined. It turns out she will be beginning to attend a new prep school called Crystal Seminar, which seems to have a secret…

Episode 3:
Rei – SAILORMARS
Preview Synopsis 1:
A rumor is spreading in Usagi’s class about the “Cursed 6 o’Clock Bus”. The rumor is that those who board the 6 pm bus from the Sendai Hill will disappear forever…and so it would seem. After Usagi tells Ami that “A super hot guy is riding on the bus”, the two of them go to the Sendai Hill bus stop to go aboard.

Preview Synopsis 2:
The 6 PM bus from Sendai Hill is rumored to be spiriting people away. Usagi decides to go check out this “Cursed 6 PM Bus” along with Ami. She also hears that the bus driver is a really handsome guy. So Usagi goes off to Sendai Hill in search of this handsome driver, but instead meets a maiden from the Hikawa Shrine named Rei Hino.

Edit: translations are messed up for episode 3 (
"handsome guy" is supposed to be beautiful woman, AKA Rei
), but everyone can get the gist.

Still fine to talk about according to thread policy, at least as basic previews go.

Ehh its a bit fuzzy, as technically his preview posts are for upcoming episodes of the new anime based upon the manga, just because they're nearly identical to the old anime/live action doesn't mean we should just spoil these episodes because not everyone has seen the old anime/manga. My guess was that the "its okay to talk about the old anime" was in context to things that were different from this adaptation, and not an excuse to spoil upcoming episodes that feature similar events. Easier to air on the side of caution and just spoiler tag it.

Well, new Luna looks cuter.

Also, can someone link me to the Mamoru 1992 Sunglasses GIF? Whenever I do it, it attaches the Naru to it.
