Ok, so shoddy/weird art aside,

this was a pretty good episode. Good pacing, lots of informations and/or explanations crammed in and finally a good battle scene.

Hey he didn't tell Luna to talk. :(

Yeah, I was waiting for this moment. :(
"Yeah Luna, say something."

I remember actually laughing at that part when it happened in manga. Not here. :/

Watching episode 10 of the original anime to compare.

I already did that waiting for the new episode to be released. Aside from the two main plot points (the demon bus abducting people and Sailor Mars entering the scene) there's really not much similarity between them.

I read the chapter before this, and am watching the original anime now.

If anything feels lacking in Crystal it is the score. =/

Sailor Moon Crystal Episode 3:

Ah yes indeed, we have at last reached one of the major points of deviation involving Rei Hino.
As expected Sailor Moon Crystal adheres to the manga faithfully by making her a walking oxymoron, she is supposed to be the guardian of fiery passion but her personality is cold and distant and she gets along with Usagi like they are sisters, or as if Usagi would have her way, lovers. I will be honest, I do think the first anime series has the superior version of Rei, they not only got her character more in line with her background temperament but also casting her as the Verionca to Usagi's Betty made for a unique team dynamic that stood out in the early going. Here it is much more flat and dull, but that isn't really the fault of Crystal. On the other hand, I do like that Usagi has been toned down to the point of tolerable while still keep her massive flaws intact. This Usagi I actually buy as heroine who genuinely wants to help people but also has character flaws that hold her back at times. Anyway, this was a rather good episode aside from the usual production issues and the fight with Jadite was miles better then anything seen in the previous series.

Not sure what people are talking about, there was nothing special about that fight scene. In fact, it was pretty lame.

Yeah, I'm disappointed they cut out like half of the bus conversation (the best parts), and left Jadeite's death ambiguous. It makes me worried about the more violent scenes later on.

Holy shit, so
Jadeite is dead? LOL I thought he was gonna be a major villain in this series. I thought he just pulled a Team Rocket at the end.

Actually
He isn't dead, unlike the manga, he didn't burn away, he just teleported.

The episode felt better than previous episodes, but since it's still introducing Sailor Guadians, it's going to feel a bit short in action still. The next episode should be good, and I wonder how much of it they'll change from the manga.

Also (preview spoiler)
and if you watched the Preview, you see Jadeite's eyes (I'm sure it's him and not Zoisite), meaning they've changed things for the next episode.

The preview was nothing but cuts from the first two episodes. They didn't show any footage of episode 4.

This was a very.. :l episode.

The depiction of Rei is.. ok maybe, but she is much more demure than the original anime run, and that's a shame for me. I liked her fire power and transformation better than the other scouts so far at the very least!
There were some parts I found interesting in its divergence and sticking with the manga, but the fight scene was just terrible.

Mars did have the best transformation sequence I think.

Also what was up with the "let's transform so we can teleport" thing? Didn't get that at all. Also how do they keep getting gadgets from the Sailor V game, is Luna just messing with them by making them play a game to earn them or what? So weird. Luna shitting the devices out was better imo.

The game trains the girls how to fight.

The game is part of a secret project cooked up by Luna and Sailor V in order to provide the other scouts with the gadgetry they need if I recall correctly.

So are they just going to introduce a new Sailor Scout every episode until they all join the team? How many episodes are they planning for this series?

Seems pretty clear they're pacing this like the manga.
And the original anime had a substantial chunk of time with just a senshi trio of Moon, Mercury and Mars.
Both Jadeite and Nephrite had been defeated before a 4th one showed up.

I don't expect Jupiter next episode (she wasn't teased in advance as Mercury and Mars were) but I wouldn't be surprised to see her after the 3-week break.

I'm starting to get very meh about this series. First episode annoyed me, second one felt sort of OK, this just went to don't care territory.

Unfortunately Rei is not as hot in the new Sailor Moon as she was in the original. Don't get me wrong, she's still sexy, but something feels a little off. It might be the posing, or it could just be the animation at play. Aside from personality dynamics, a lot of the Sailor Senshis' sex appeal (for me anyways) boils down to the delicate relationship between the hemline and thighs. In the original series this is managed with care and sensitivity. The artistic sensibilities of the animators allowed for the maximum amount of leg to be shown, while keeping the physics of the unrealistically tiny skirt grounded (mostly) in reality. Of course there is some exaggeration happening, but it's within acceptable boundaries for the most part, and I don't recall the skirts looking so at odds with physics or motion either. The skin and cloth duo sing to each other in perfect harmony as the artist understands that one element exists to define the other. Without either, the appeal is lost. Sensual nods to the viewer without crossing into voyeuristic or male gaze territory require experienced hands and delicate foresight... and I wouldn't expect it of your average in-betweener. However, in the updated version the skirt physics call far more attention to themselves, flapping and moving about in awkward ways (like some kind of wild teenager with no manners or finesse), and holding still positions that are even more impossible in reality. Sensuality is lost. Regrettably... this, along with other inconsistencies leads one to believe that the hands at Toei Animation are just not as skilled as they once were.

I concur.

Rei's face felt weirder than the other (I did not read the manga, so still getting used to aesthetics).

I remember that in the old anime the scenes where Usagi and Rei kept bickering with each other were the most fun for me, so that early reaction of Usagi's to Rei was a bit if a surprise...

Also, in the old anime didn't Jadeite die in a battle at an airport?
This version felt early and underwhelming in comparison...

It has nothing to do with manga's aesthetics. In the manga Rei was beautiful:

This anime's artstyle is simply terrible. :/

Get used to it. If the anime keeps following the manga chapter by chapter, major villains will die really quickly. After all, the first season (Dark Kingdom saga) has 46 episodes in the original anime while only 13 chapters in the manga.

2014 Anime Pose

Yeah she looks way more fierce and awesome in the first anime.

So today I learned a little about the finer points of fanservice...that aside, looking at things like those stills (I do remember noticing the Jadeite still for a moment) does show some problems here. My main thing with this episode was the confusion at the end. It seemed like Jadeite was getting burned by fire, and then next thing you know they all escaped from the dimension they were in and talking to the kidnapped girl's mom. I wasn't even 100% sure if Jadeite died or not, and I would have said no if it wasn't for the fact that I knew he was supposed to die around now.

Honestly if you watch the original anime, Rei isn't that different in terms of personality between here and there. The "bitchy Rei" personality must not have popped up more until 3-Guardian team filler started. I'd have to look at a couple of the episodes that just got retranslated to confirm. The other thing is this weird schedule. I'll admit that it's hard to stay excited if I'm trying to remember watching episodes as they come vs. watching one a week. I suppose I could put it in my calendar to watch it when on time, but all the same, it would have been better if they did a more traditional schedule.

Rei was more in line with the manga in the beginning of the anime.

So is each episode a chapter?
