Rei seems to be the biggest victim of derpy faces, she just seems off in every other shot. Still enjoyed the episode though if that's truly the end of Jadeite they could have made it a bit clearer.

I was starting to get use of the artwork, but when you guys put up screen caps of the anime, it's starting to look weird and derpy to me. :|

Speaking of the derpy screencaps, anyone else think that they'll clean it up for the blu ray release? I've seen a lot of comparisons where the tv version (even though this is... a little different) can have some bad artwork, but get totally fixed up when ready to sell. Even shows like Madoka got a bit of a makeover for the blu ray/DVD release.

They would have to redo a lot of frames then, because (at least in the Rei episode) derpy faces and rubber bodies appeared constantly and were noticeable even without pausing the anime every few seconds. :/

hmm i'm re-reading the manga to compare to the anime after each episode and i'm noticing they're actually cutting a few panels from some pages ocasionally. didn't exepect them to be cutting stuff...

I don't really like to complain about anime or any kind of drawing/cartoon since I suck at it but some of those faces and proportions are getting on my nerves and imo it's doing a huge disservice to the whole thing. It actually makes me feel uncomfortable.
One would think they would be more careful about stuff like this but they simply don't.

Instead of making me more interested it's doing all the opposite.

The show is what it is though. It would be more weird discussing fanservice if they weren't already dressed in miniskirts and high heels. The conversion I think is valid since obvious changes have been made for the worse. Not that it needs to continue.

Haha, Keiko Han once said that Kotono Mituishi's personality is just like Usagi's.
If Kotono Mituishi is Usagi and Toru Furuya is Mamoru, is Keiko Han Luna or Queen Beryl in personality?

So is each episode a chapter?
So far, it looks that way.

So who said the new songs were just generic J-pop?

The ending lyrics were written by Takeuchi Naoko. That's her pen name.
Didn't she also write the lyrics for Sailor Stars opening?

Yeah they are cutting out the humor for some reason.

This remake is going downhill quick, I was barely able to make it through ep 3.
Sad to say, I'm having the same problem.

I actually tried watching episode 3 three times, but ended up pausing and doing other stuff. Downloaded it in 720p earlier today but haven't even bothered to try it.

Been reading the original manga too, so it's kinda hard wanting to watch the anime at the same time. :<

i actually held back on reading the manga since i stopped halfway into the Death Busters part because i wanted to see the new anime first like last year but these changes are making me reconsider since things aren't gonna be quite 1:1 by then (especially with the toned down violence)

Umm they fucked up her forehead, imagine what she would look like without any hair

She has an underbite but on her forehead, serving Rihanna tbh

You're going to have to elaborate on this one. I've seen some derpy frames, but this isn't one of them.

TBH, this thread is making me realize that I'm actually really bad at noticing derpy stills in anime if it's not pointed out to me. Guess that's what happens when you barely watch it anymore. Besides Jadeite's weird face, I wouldn't have seen any of this stuff if I was watching it on my own.

Most of these are from transitions, which is why you didn't and I didn't either. The show isn't any worse looking than the likes of P4A. At least this has its own style.

Why does the biggest girl-oriented franchise with two weeks between episodes still get shit animation?

Because Toei. This is not limited to the new series either. The original series has all kinds of problems including facial animation. Not to mention the overuse of still images and those terrible backgrounds. I appreciate what they are trying to do with the new series, but they just don't have the talent. I'm still enjoying the new show quite a bit and love that it's following the manga so closely this time, but hopefully they can iron out some of these problems as production continues or if the series is picked up for another season. The quality in the original series did gradually improve.

Episodes like 26 is what I used to call the "bad art" episodes back before I ever got online.

It's not fair to blame it on Toei, though. I mean, obviously it is their fault, but you gotta remember that it isn't just Toei.

Sailor Moon Crystal seems to be hit really hard, especially with smear animation frames. :v

I'm curious of the context of this shot. Is this her moving her hand really fast? The extra fingers might be there to give an extra sense of speed while in motion that you can't really animate at the show's framerate (meaning you cheat at it).

If not then continue to blast away.

That's the exact same thing happening in the majority of these screen caps that people circulate everywhere. There are indeed some wonky key frames in Crystal, but at least focus the criticism on the ones that stay on the screen longer than a second (like Rei at the top of this page, not Mars in the OP).

Is there a good blog or source that lists out these problems or provides critiques? I saw a post on Tumblr, but it was for promotional stuff before the series aired and had been reblogged.

I haven't been informing myself at all about this show, but I really don't get why it's being treated this badly when it could be an amazing remake.

Aren't there tons of Sailor Moon fans? I just don't get it. Even fucking Precure has had shit animation this whole season, what's going on?

I thought I'd post something for Hitokage in here, since he loved Sailor Moon and even though I didn't know him, I can see he was respected in the community. I hope they have Crunchyroll/Hulu/etc. in heaven so he can keep watching Crystal. :(

Was holding off on watching more Crystal until there were more episodes, but gonna watch Episode Ami later tonight in Hito's honor. <3

I liked the 3rd episode. Some of the animation is wonky, to say the least. I liked Rei's transformation but her pose from the original anime was much better.

I really hope Jadeite is alive, we didn't see him die which is weird after the youma in the previous two episodes were shown to die on screen, Jadeite simply vanishes. I hope he teleported and the anime diverts from the manga, if it doesn't and every episode to come is just an animated manga chapter I'm going to lose interest

Better stop watching now then

What's the point if they don't stick to the manga?
They point is to get a new perspective, a new spin on a new story or more insight into characters that were under developed in the original work. The manga's finished, the entire story is known, the staff should use this to their advantage.
I want Crystal to follow the manga's general storyline but I want it to expand on certain things like the villains, in the manga they are forgettable for the most part. If this ends up being barely more than a motion comic I will be disappointed, I want to be surprised.

If you want that go watch the original anime, the whole point of crystal is to be a straight manga adaptation. The last thing we need is another Sailor Moon adaptation bogged down with tons of filler

I never said I wanted filler, don't put words in my mouth.

And no, I will not go watch the old anime, I want a new adaptation just not a straight adaptation (and that it will be one is still an assumption at this point, no one involved with the series has ever said that), the manga just is far from perfect, there's a lot of room for improvement.

You cant have it both ways

You either want a straight adaptation of the manga, or you want them to add filler to expand or "improve" things. The amount of times filler has actually been good and added to a series that was trying to follow the manga can be counted on one hand. Toei's filler writing team is freaking awful why on Earth would you want them to "expand on the manga" when any expansion they did would have to be instantly throw away to get back to manga canon.

Let's put it this way;

It's bad enough the art is all over the shop. I don't want the art to be all over the shop, the schedule to be teeth pulling AND on top of everything the only thing to be covered to be the Dark Kingdom.

It's had three goes at this. It's time for other, more inresting arcs to shine.

I'll bet anything that they're waiting to assemble all 5 senshi before any one gets the Ariki Retired treatment.

Indeed, the original Sailor Moon was not bogged down by filler in the same capacity since it strayed and became its own interpretation very quickly. That isn't to say that some of that shit wasn't filler, looking at you Jadeite arc.

I agree with this, but my point is if people want an adaptation of Sailor Moon that expands upon everything and is a very different take from the manga, then the original anime still holds up very well and is watchable. Crystal's problem is it's massive production issues, other then that I've very happy that it's kept to the manga story closely for better or worse, that's exactly what I wanted from the series. I feel that the two series complement each other well a lot better then say FMA 03 and FMA:B do.

To be honest, the henchmen in the manga definitely needed more development. In the TV Series, they had a distinct personality, but in the manga are fairly indistinguishable from one another outside of their design and jobs.
