I saw someone on ANN saying how Crystal has bombed with viewers and blu ray sales worldwide. Is there any proof to the numbers of these things, or a statement made by Toei? I sure haven't heard anything.
There are no American Blu-ray sales for Crystal yet, because Viz decided to wait to dub and release Crystal until after they finish with 90's Sailor Moon (which will take
years). It might also have been a demand from Toei, because Japanese anime business plans apparently try to make ~3000 of the hardest-core otaku (whales) pay for the entire production through overpriced Blu-rays, and they hate it when American versions threaten their grip on those whales by offering to sell people 12 episodes for $50. So apparently, the Japanese companies like it when (demand that) the American companies give them some timed exclusivity.
But now Viz has apparently cancelled their plans to
significantly delay the Blu-ray release of Crystal, and they're getting started on it. Sooo... I'm not sure if there's anything to read into there. Perhaps the Japanese Blu-ray release of Crystal hasn't had the legs that Toei anticipated, so now they're feeling less threatened by Viz, and would kind of maybe appreciate some Crystal Blu-ray sales in a new market before the series gets canned.
There is also a factor of, Viz ran into quality problems with 90's Sailor Moon, due to their pointless Blu-ray upscale. So maybe they
needed to tag-in Crystal, while they fix their mess.
As for the streaming, Crystal was
very hyped, but then maybe half of the audience didn't like what they saw and loudly walked away (but they still like the new merchandise). I don't know if there's any way to tell what Toei expected or what they got or how many people walked away, but they definitely lost some audience.
