Samsung Silent On Disastrous Galaxy S6 Sales

I think most people finally realized how unnecessary it is to update a perfectly working phone every year. I still use my S3 and see no point in upgrading any time soon.

this is the correct answer. Anyone expecting Samsung to sell 70 million virtually identical phones a year is crazy.

even apple isn't going to be getting away with this one for much longer.

Absolutely adored the S2. Most amazing phone I ever used.
Got an S3 in 2013, thinking things could only get better.

When my contract runs out I am never choosing Samsung again.
Is the Xperia Z3 any good?

The thing is, the Galaxy S6 is right now the very best Android phone if you mostly care about performance. Its display, camera and proc are unrivaled. Absolutely incredible stuff. Even they managed to implement a good fingerprint reader AND mostly fixed TouchWiz, to the point of making it nice and user friendly at last.

It saddens me to a point, but with so many brilliant phones in the €300 range it looks like Samsung will have to make peace with the idea of the Galaxy S range becoming a halo line instead of its former sales powerhouse.

Back in the day you needed to dole out €600 and over in order to get an Android phone that didn't suck after a year, but that is no longer the case. Samsung needs to wise the fuck up and start fixing its mid range while keeping the Galaxy S as their prestige line.

They could try to not make 500 different phones with a similar design every year,Samsung is associated with 'cheap' by a lot of people despite them making high end phones

Actually they shouldn't. The rise of emerging market brands like Xiamoi means only bad news for google. A good number of these OEMs ship their phones with a "googless" Android skin (phone come without any google apps installed at all, not even playstore). Google don't see a single cent from these phones, with Samsung at least they see some money.

Is that related to the fact that Google is basically nonexistent in China?

I think both of these posts are correct. I love my Edge, it's the best phone I have ever used or held, but performance wise it's not a massive jump over my old HTC One M7. The biggest improvements that I have noticed over the M7 are the camera(I went from one of the worst cameras on a phone to the best) and app install speed because of the blazing fast memory.

It was worth jumping into for me because I love the design of the Edge and I was bored of my M7, and I want new Android updates(M7 reached its end of life, so no more updates). But for your average smartphone user, those things are probably not an issue.

Hell, I see tons of people still rocking iPhone 4's and 4s's.

Honestly, where does this drive of buying a (high end nonetheless) new phone every year stem from?

I went from no smartphone to S2, then after 3 years I got the S5. Both times it felt like a nice big improvement.

Of course, I understand it's mostly a contract thing. But still. Imagine buying a new laptop every year or if game consoles released new models each year. So little improvement. So much money.

Mostly wondering about Android phones, not about Apple fanboys that have different reasons to get new Apple devices each year (and will continue to do so).

I don't see it either, but some people do want the latest thing whatever. I mean, I even sucked it up and finished a 2 year contract with the worst phone I've ever owned with the S4 and now I have Nexus 6 glory, I might not even upgrade in 2 years unless there is a compelling device of around the same size.

Samsung has been trying way too hard to be Apple. And they'll never out-Apple Apple.

Unless they somehow do an 180º and manage to differentiate themselves with their next model, I'd say their best days are long behind them.

A bomba being saved by another bomba?

I think Apple started this phenomenon, always needing the latest and greatest.

I dont like that they went Unibody

Does the S6 still have a Micro SD slot?

On of the reasons I love and still use my S3 is because its NOT a damn iphone clone

It sounds like their sales are basically flat to the S4, S5 release. Maybe not what they wanted but hardly disastrous.

When I saw this thread I thought it meant they really tanked. Which I kind of thought sales would do once Apple launched the large screen phones.

I think its just that they are out of touch with the current Android crowd

Pretty sure a lot of Android users have moved to cheap off contract options for the savings

I consider Android users to be thrifty and resourceful so I can see why the S6 is a less attractive option in the face of its competition

Apple is gonna apple. They are basically their own market at this point.

I expect most of the real world does exactly what you do, and is sensible about it. But in forums where technophiles hang around, you always want that new thing.

Lack of SD card fucked them over.

For me that and the non replaceable battery are why I didn't buy one even though I was looking for an upgrade this cycle. Screen looks cool but the "edge" thing seems a little gimmicky to me. Ill stick with my S4 for another year and see what my options are then.

Yeah replaceable battery is the big thing for me. I want to keep my next phone for 3 years, and without a replaceable battery that isn't really possible.
I know people are saying that it's just techy people who care about this, but they have wider influence than just the phone they buy, as friends and family often ask for recommendations. My wife for example will probably move to iPhone when our contract is up because I told her that the S6 doesn't have a replaceable battery or SD card slot.

I think there are two big factors working against Samsung here:

1. The Galaxy series has always had the major advantage of being the spec leader. This is still the case, but the Android market is so mature now that even budget phones are impressive and powerful, so this isn't nearly as advantageous as it used to be.

2. There is a lot of excellent competition in the Android space nowadays.

It definitely won't be a spec leader this year with so many remaining flagships yet to come. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised if the moto x 2015 beat it out.

With what? An undercooked 810 or a dual core 808?

Samsung is the spec leader this year by default because Qualcomm fucked up.

I'll tell you a big reason why Samsung is failing. Service and warranty support. You sell an expensive high end phone and yet offer shit warranty support. I had a note 3 and the data port broke. Not only is that a bitch since it's tough to get everything off your phone without a functioning data port but here is the kicker.

Samsung wanted me to mail in my phone so they could fix it with a two week turn around time. How is this acceptable when your main competition Apple offers same day swap out for new phones?!?! On the phone I told Samsung you are about to lose me as a customer and I won't be back until you change this policy.

Bought a 6+ haven't looked back.

Love my regular s6. I think the edge gimmick hurt them, also the lack of removable battery and SD card really didn't help.

That doesn't make any sense whatsoever. There's more demand for the Edge right now despite the higher price...

It's at the point that Samsung can't meet the demand for the Edge.

I'd say it's the regular model that's underperforming.

lol

i mean, the color scheme could really make something that looks pretty nice. how did they manage to fuck that up

might as well have the visor up, with RDJ giving a wink

Christ, read it as "giving a wank" and wondered how that would work.

SD card support isn't really an issue for most people nowadays. It was critical when Android phones shipped with only 4-8 gb internal memory, but now they come with 32 or 64 gb which is enough for the majority of the public. Even when phones only came with very limited space, joe public usually never got around to installing a SD card... Another factor is that Android OS is currently very unfriendly towards SD card use - very limiting writing capabilities for apps unless you hack your phone. It also doesn't help that the file system can be confusing for the average user with both the internal and external memory being listed as SD cards and trying to find where you saved files.

As for removable battery, it seems like most people desire it, yet never use it. At best, they get some cheap knock off battery from ebay that works like crap. So I have to wonder if it is a factor. More likely it is just the cheaper Android phones are no longer as crappy in comparison and the new Samsung really doesn't offer much over their competitors other than looking more like an Iphone. Should have at least kept the waterproofing, a feature that requires no effort from the user and is desirable.

I am never getting roped into a contract again, therefore I refuse to spend $800 on a phone. Just bought a lg g2 from best buy when they were on sale for $150. I don't care about having the latest and greatest no issue getting a flagship that is a couple years old considering its still quite capable.

My friend who is a novice with phones and is like a common joe who is not into the tech or anything like that. Imagine a guy who goes to Gamestop for his games.

He refuses to buy the iPhone nor Galaxy S6 due to the lack of the Micro SD card. He has 32 GB micro SD card in his Galaxy S5.

I have a few other friends like him as well. The micro sd card is a huge reason for consumers to not get a Galaxy S6.
