It's been one year, heh.

I still miss you Iwata. I still do. *insert BibleThump spam here* T_T
I really hope your legacy lives on.

Rest In Peace.

every time i finish an old 3DS game and his name appears on the credits i think about all he did for nintendo and video games in general.

Watching the first post, a rainy day, couldn't be any other way.

Seing Shigesato Itoi in the other pictures Rosti posted, as i understand he is closest to Miyamoto. i wonder if they think who will be in what place when the time comes?

Wish Nintendo gave the rains to the company to someone with a similar mindset, i wonder who was in Iwata's mind to take his place?

They likely knew for awhile when where and who... Kimishima is almost certainly a stop-gap. Not that he hasn't earned his position, but he's definitely old guard, older than Iwata was. He's there to tide them over till they have their whole situation figured out.

Amazing guy and totally unique. Irreplaceable. I didn't know him, nor did I ever even meet him, but I miss what he brought to gaming immensely. It's not quite the same without him.

This is really interesting.

Is this an educated speculation on your part of it has been a subjected touched upon in some of Nintendo's interviews, share holders meetings or other events?

Kimishima, from my very superficial impresions, seems like a busyness man. Yamauchi was one of course, but that man was pation incarnated in flesh and blood. Nintendo as a company needs somebody that distinguishes itself in some way.

Edit. Some of Iwata's predictions and industry views were spot on, almost profetic. Such lucidity.

Time surely flies. Still makes me sad.

Most of all, he was such a nice person... so close to fans.

A very unique figure and an inconmensurable loss for this industry.

He passed much too early. He was a visionary that expanded the video game market beyond just your stereotypical "gamer."

My favorite quote of his:
"On my business card, I am a corporate president. In my mind, I am a game developer. But in my heart, I am a gamer."

Hasn't been talked about officially, but there has been a lot of talk unofficially, as well as on GAF. Satoru Iwata was by no means a young man (though still really young) at 55, but he was made President in his early 40's.

Compare Kimishima who's already in his late 60's... Not necessarily someone who needs to be rushed out the door, but he's a man who's going to be looking at retirement in the next 5-10 years. This is not the kind of person you want for long term stability, especially in an industry where console cycles last 5 or so years.

If I had to guess, he's going to run Presidency throughout the NX years, and he'll retire around the time the NX replacement is ready, or at the very least when the NX is retired... Who will replace him though? I don't personally have good speculation there... but we're almost certainly looking at someone younger. Mid-40's or early 50's.

This is probably neither here nor there though for this thread.

Feels strange that its already a year on.

I don't just mean in the sense that it feels like yesterday that he was still around - which to extent it does - but just that the year... has just felt kinda empty from Nintendo, in his absence. Yes, there have been Directs, but fewer and farther between, and the company has kept itself guarded during that time. Now that's probably just correlation rather than causation - they're building up to a new console while easing down on their existing hardware, of course they'd be quieter than usual - but it is all the more pronounced.

He was one of the best people in the industry. So much genuine passion and business smarts in an industry that can often tend to be really cynical a lot of the time.

I'm still very sad that he passed. I was so upset that I was singing his praises to my parents, and I almost never talk to my parents about stuff related to games.

I dont think anyone expected Iwata to leave us so soon.

Man, that first photo breaks my heart :(. What a terrible way for a person to go.

When I first learned of his death, it was like a punch in the gut. In a way, it was as if a friend had passed. Even if in reality Iwata was a corporate CEO whom I had never met, he went so out of his way to engage the audience - not from a podium on a stage, but in a straightforward and humble manner. He never seemed above doing silly things, and embodied the kind of playfulness that his company represented.

His legacy speaks for itself. A highly talented craftsman who proved his business acumen, yet never seemed to put himself above the people he was managing. He has all my respect .

I miss him he was really someone special - he is also the reason why im so excited to see the NX, i know he pretty much worked until the last second to make sure that Nintendo was on the right track.

RIP Iwata,

Still the saddest day of 2015... Couldn't believe it when this happened and it still feels like he should be here. The entirety of Nintendo has some big shoes to fill...

This is also the day I started modding Super Smash Bros. and now I'm extremely active in that community. Thinking about Iwata inspired to me to take his work that I loved and make it beautiful in my own way...

Thank you Iwata...

I dont think anyone expected Iwata to leave us so soon.

It was sudden for us, no doubt. Iwata kept most of his health concerns to himself... But the company higher ups? They knew many months, maybe even a year ahead of time. The whole E3 production was done to cover for his failing health which undoubtedly took a good while to plan.

I don't believe for a second that Iwata didn't have a plan for what was going to happen after he left, he was too methodical to just left things to chance.

Reading Itoi's farewell to him still leaves me with a lump in my throat, even if it's been a year. It just blows that we'll never get a CEO (well, nobody as unique) like Iwata. I don't know about everybody else, but Nintendo became more... well, what's the word I'm looking for? Approachable? Yeah, thats it. When Iwata took over from Yamauchi you just could see how Nintendo was changing. Iwata always showed his face, rain or shine. And while he was the CEO of a multinational, he still made time to do these kind of things;

Sigh. Would have loved to see more of his crazy ideas. Alas.

That was a sad day indeed :( Only time i cried when a "celebrity" (for lack of better word) died. It was all the pictures and stuff on GAF that made me cry.

It was such an unexpected announcement and made me sad for a few days. Iwata was a great man that did a lot for this industry. He helped create the instant hits that are the DS and Wii, helped Game Freak & Ito get their projects (Pokemon & Earthbound) complete, single handedly play-tested Melee before the GameCube's launch and played a hand in one of my favorite Nintendo creations, the Kirby series.

It was an honor playing Nintendo over the years and seeing his name in many of its titles put a smile on my face looking across his history. It was tragic he passed away but he left a massive impact on the world around him, with the upcoming NX and recently released Pokemon Go showing how his creations and ideas will forever live on the in the modern gaming landscape.

Thank you Iwata for my Nintendo memories.

Man, it rained hard on the day of Iwata's funeral.

Still sad that he's gone. Always will be. He was just a special, unique human being who brought joy to millions of people all over the world, literally.

R.I.P

Mr Itoi's statement is the one that hits me the most

"In any farewells, all you have to say is "See you again".
Friends see each other again.
There's nothing strange about it.
Yes. See you again.

I heard that you are going on a long journey.
It was supposed to be in the far future.
You never said it in words, but wearing your best outfit, you were saying "Sorry for it to be so sudden".

You always looked after somebody instead of yourself.
As such friend, maybe this journey is your first time being selfish.

To be honest, I still don't really believe anything.
I feel like you'll be sending me email to ask for lunch.
Just like always, you can call me and ask "If you have some free time".
Of course, I can always ask you too.

Anyway, "See you again".
You can call me anywhere, anytime, and I'll be calling you too.
There are things I want to discuss, and good ideas I want to tell you.

See you again.
No, we are seeing each other right at this moment."

Saw the thread title and teared up. When I first heard about his passing last year, I was having dinner at Red Robin. I saw the news and couldn't stop crying. Iwata was such an inspiration to me and every other Nintendo gamer out there, and to this day I have never stopped missing him. RIP Iwata; we all love you.

One year... already? It still feels just like the other day. I will always remember what he and his contributions did for my life. 平和岩田さんで休憩 [Rest in peace Iwata-san].

Damn, a year already? Time sure flies...

Yeah, that Itoi piece always makes me sad. Seems like they were pretty great friends outside of work too.

His picture before he passed away is so depressing. Its pretty upsetting how sickly he looked, but I'm really glad he is remembered well. I'm sure he was a great person to be around.

Hard to believe it's been a year. It still brings a little sadness when his name pops up, and I am reminded that he is no longer with us. But it also brings some happiness, in that his work is still leaving an impact even after he is gone.

Thank you for everything, Satoru Iwata.

It's heartbreaking just how sickly he looks in that final picture.

We lost a great visionary a year ago. Thank you Iwata.

Man, time flies when you think of how long its been since someone last died. A year has past so fast and here we are with a Iwata-less Nintendo. May he forever be remembered in the gaming industry as a giant. I hope someday puts statues of their past presidents that made the company great like Yamauchi, Iwata and Miyamoto.

Looking back, Iwata was a person who always fought for a better gaming future. He saw the medium as more than just flashy graphical specticals with bloated budgets, and felt that gaming was for more than just the focus tested "18-34 year old core gamer" demographic. Really some of Nintendo's most innovative games last generation were ones that thought outside the box. Who knew that exercise software could be a viable market? Or how edutainment games could actually be fun? When things were looking bad for Nintendo, he was definitely trying to change course for the company, while still staying true to it's core philosophy. There were times where I could disagree, particularly his initial stance on online play, but I feel he really cared about the future of not just Nintendo, but gaming as a whole.

So while Nintendo may focus on expanding the reach of their IP now, I hope the company still sticks to Iwata's philosophy in both software and hardware, but tastefully modernized for today's audience.
