Scalebound cancelled [Platinum Games and Kamiya have commented]

there's nothing worse than people on twitter who are in the know and want you to know they know but don't actually say anything

Without knowing more, it really feels like Microsoft's game development division is on the precipice of a complete dive. MGStudios is not delivering the kind of variety and consistency needed to compete in a global market with diverse tastes.

When PS3 stumbled on NA, Sony could lean on its global Playstation brand. Microsoft can't do the same, and needing a home run in solely one region each generation seems like a losing proposition.

I'm guessing it's high drama in some quarters of Xbox division right now.

McWhertor is from Polygon and and was at Kotaku for years.

Would not be shocked if in the near future we get articles about exactly what happened. I'd bet my dollar Jason is probably on it along with others.

So my decision to sell my X1 was something I was unsure of, but news like this makes me realize I made the right move.

MS thinks specs will sell their Scorpio, by are they wrong.

On Metacritic:

Code:
91	Bayonetta 2
90	Bayonetta
84	Vanquish
83	Metal Gear Rising
81	MadWorld
78	The Wonderful 101
77	Transformers: Devastation
75	Infinite Space
74	Star Fox Guard
73	Anarchy Reigns
69	Star Fox Zero
64	The Legend of Korra
55	Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutants in Manhatthan

You'll also find that most of the low rated ones were smaller games made on a tight budget...

Honest question: how do you know what the budgets were for the games?

Isn't that idiotic from a business perspective and downright horrible as well but burning bridges is completely stupid on Microsoft's part if they have been horrible unless they really don't give a damn about being in the game business beyond dipping their Halo, Minecraft toes in the pool.

Good? Game looked like complete garbage when shown.

If they're going to take the money they saved on this turd and put it to use elsewhere on another new project, then I'm ok with it.

No worries, all that money is getting funneled right into some more Halo, Gears and Forza. Enjoy!

it always sucks to see a game outright cancelled. I was interested despite not being as high on Kamiya as many here are (great games but not always for my short attention span) and it definately was unique which is always great. It looked rough but it still sucks to see it go.

I do too as this seems rife for good leaks.

There's rarely a "bad guy" to pin the blame on in these situations; because ultimately when a project gets canned late on like this, everyone involved takes a hit. Noones happy.

The bottom line though is that if the IP holder had real faith in the project, it would continue.
If its finished, its because the publisher unilaterally terminated the partnership, blaming the developer is laughable when they had Hobson's choice in the matter!

Milestones are always a matter of trust because whatever's contracted is never going to be described in such forensic detail that the publisher can't turn round and say, "Nope, we're not signing off on that" if it suits them.

Its just the nature of the beast, and if the publisher decides they want to call time on a project failing milestones is just a standard precursor.

Exactly.

People trying to shit on Platinum wtf.

Also Korra had some nice mechanics and Star Fox was all on Miyamotos stupid ass.
It's perfectly within reason to say they've had some stinkers, which is all that was said.

I don't know that I'd call it the exact same situation, but I see your points. With Rime it was an odd situation where the devs just one day announced that they had reacquired the rights to their IP and would be releasing it as a multiplat now. I don't remember Sony ever announcing that they had canceled it (Did they even ever publically comment on it? I can't remember).
It was probably cancelled internally and then negotiated before a public release which is where it differs from this situation. Sony probably didn't invest a third of what Microsoft did into Rime, so comparatively Tequila Works probably had a lot more room to negotiate.

People are really getting at Platinum for a couple of bad Activision games. It's a shame.

Yeah, those games are obviously churned out quickly and on a low budget, so it's no surprise they're not up to snuff with other Platinum software. I really don't think it's fair to judge the studio on this when they're obviously just doing it for the money to help pay the bills.

Yup, I actually kind of liked the Korra game, like I said in the Turtles game (getting removed) thread, even if it could have clearly been better if given more time to further flesh out.

Damn, I actually thought it looked pretty cool. Hopefully Platinum's new IP is far enough along that all these devs can start working on it instead of going through layoffs.

Uh well between their already poor Jdev relations, and the shit they did to western devs like Obsidian and Darkside, I would expect a lot less are going to be interested in working with them.

I know quite a few developers who won't work with MS. The one I'm currently with got offers from them but they turned them down because of news through the grapevine. They just didn't want to take the chance.

Again, honest question: how do you know the length or budget of those productions?

Honest question: how do you know what the budgets were for the games?

I don't personally know the numbers, but it seems pretty obvious that a short download-only game that received almost no marketing would have a lower budget than a full priced game with way better graphics that's more than twice as long and has a ton more content.

"WE FEEL THIS IS BEST FOR GAMERS." Fucking lol.

People can keep drinking the Saviour Phil Kool-Aid if they want. Maybe they'll learn when the next piece of tragic news hits. But probably not.

And if the game comes out and is terrible (which most here considered it to look during the last presentation), would people feel ripped off and want their money back?

There's no right way to purposefully sell a shitty product. You either suck it up and take the cash, or you don't sell it. Nobody knows the quality of the game but we certainly had some opinions here.

Didn't Nintendo develop Star fox guard and Platinum develop Zero? Nintendo probably would've made a more polished game tbh

We don't exactly know what was going on there but it looks like game design came from Nintendo in case of all of the project and Platinum provided the "boring" parts such as models, textures and code. As for "what if" in case of that particular game, it exists precisely as a thing that it was supposed to be, an experiment in usage of GamePad after people complaining rightfully that it's not a good peripheral after all, while everyone else was quietly moving onto Switch presumably. If it was something else then it would be something else.

Do you think this puts off other devs from working with Microsoft?

Japanese Devs probably?

I mean, This is the second Japanese game MS funded and canceled, right?

Pretty much soured Level-5, and they haven't made an Xbox game since then. Platinum situation might put more Japanese Devs weary of signing a contract with MS.
