ScarJo takes lead role in GHOST IN THE SHELL

There was already a live action Ghost in the Shell movie. It was called The Matrix. It had exploding watermelons. Any real Hollywood attempt to do a straight GitS adaptation is going to be shit.

At this point I don't mind it. People crying need to realize that the people at Hollywood are not going to bank millions of dollars on what they consider unbankable actors.

With that much money on the line I wonder how many here would take the risk just to make a statement.

I don't know why people are giving Rupert Sanders so much grief. The direction and visual eye of Snow White and the Huntsman was the only great thing about it (outside of Newton-Howard's score).
Dude also made a nice HALO commercial back in the day.

Ha, accurate

@McKelvie: "Who cares about gender/race/sexuality as long the story's good?" says the straight white man who sees people like him in 99% of all fiction

I dont really have a problem with this. I thought the majority of the GiTS movie was white washed to look Caucasian anyway and was only Japanese in name only.

She was good in Ghost World. And this movie has Ghost in the name so it should be good... Right.
I have no hope for this movie not because of her but pretty much everything else.

I see that nothing pleases you.

So really what it comes down to is that you want asian actresses to jump over the hurdles that white actresses do despite the inert racism of Hollywood. I'm not sure why you're defending racism by means of money

The people making the casting decisions may not be racist. They are simply making choices based on audience trends. If it's financially more viable to cast a white actress in your $100mil+ film than a relatively unknown Asian actress a lot of people are going to take the safe bet.

Yeah, it's unfortunate. I think Rinko, despite being Chinese, would be a good fit for Motoko. Realistically, if I can get Scarjo for the role and still keep a relatively good budget, I think that's the decision I'm going to make though.

I'm not sure that pinning the racist tail on the Hollywood brass is the way to go in these situations. They are looking to garner mass appeal so that they can maximize their gains.

Once in a while we do see a risk get taken. Pacific Rim was one of those risks. Domestically, it under performed. Maybe Dreamworks was concerned about the appeal of the film in foreign markets?

The only way Dreamworks may have been willing to greenlight this is with the agreement that a western star would be in the lead. For some, it may be better if the film doesn't get made at all without an Asian actress. That's fine. I do find it a bit odd that people can't see the reasoning behind casting ScarJo when a $100mill+ is involved.

I think she can pull it off but the white washing is unfortunate.

That said, I would assume this will be PG-13 without nudity (She'll probably wear ace bandages like in Prometheus) but the violence is kinda' up in the air. Maybe an unrated cut will be released later. Don't forget that Ghost in the Shell 2 was PG-13 and got away with quite a bit.

I doubt it will carry the same philosophical impact as the Oshii films or 2nd Gig.

So when a white person is cast in a different racial role, it's bullshit, but when a white role is cast by a black/asian/hispanic/whatever person, it's great.

It either goes both ways, or it doesn't.

Are you actually making this statment whike being completely ignorant of the history of white washing roles in media? The systemic marginalization and type casting of minorities in Hollywood?

Or was your post a stupid attempt at trolling?

I'm not following the news about this movie but will it be set in Japan as well or will we have an alternate American version? If the latter is the case, I'm okay with this.

I don't care about whether she's playing an asian-looking shell/sleeve for part of the film. What I do care is that it's not transposed to boring fucking New York or Chicago. Set that shit in Hong Kong.

The best you'll get is retrofuture Chinatown in New York.

Yup. I am honestly more worried about the setting than anything else.

I really want it to stay in Japan.

I always figured Motoko Kusanagi was Japanese in name and location only because
she is a full body cyborg and may not have even been a woman originally.

Oh, he made the Halo ODST commercial? That was actually some good stuff.

She was basically "major" in Lucy anyway.

Eliminating all of the special power, and creating a more coherent plot would make for a better movie IMO

Will this be the film that kicks off the shift from superhero/comic-book films to Hollywood manga adaptations? Or will we have to wait for Cameron to make Battle Angel?

Bro, with Scarlett signed on, the thing is as good as greenlit.

If Besson can still get shit made after The Family/Malta Vita, then Scarlett is the golden ticket.

Hey who knows, we could get lucky still!

Speed Racer should've been that film goddammit.

Honestly I loathe it either way. It's not hard to find people of accurate nationality if they'd actually look. I can't stand the Human Torch in the new Fantastic Four. I can't stand Tiger Lily in that Pan movie, and I sure as hell can't stand this. Maybe the movie will still be good but is it so hard for Hollywood to just try and be faithful? I love Ghost in the Shell and I don't hate or blame ScarJo but I will very likely not be seeing this. Motoko Kusanagi is god damn Japanese.

Lord help this movie if it's set in NYC on top of everything.

I really want a new Cyberpunk/Tech Noir push in Hollywood.

Then we can see a Neuromancer flick get the green light.

You speak as if casting someone of asian desent would make the movie better

Wasn't that All You Need Is Kruise?

Great actress. Hopefully the movie will be good.

I don't think Neuromancer would work well as a movie and I don't think Cyberpunk/Tech Noir will get a push in any case.

Speed Racer sucked hard though. Not surprising it didn't kickstart anything.

Oh jesus, between this and Akira it looks like we're in the first wave of Hollywood anime movies that will be on par with the first wave of hollywood comic book movies from the 90s. All big names and no care for the source material.

Just not enough of a built-in audience to get funding. Someone independently rich would have to fund a cyberpunk film.

THE FILM WOULD NOT HAVE GOTTEN MADE WITH AN ASIAN ACTRESS.

It's sad, but it's the truth. This film is only getting made because of ScarJo, because she can balance the financial risk.

Bro Blade was great.

Nah it's highly likely going to be ass regardless, but at least it could be ass that got the simplest details right. If they're that terrified that it would bomb if a Japanese woman was front and center than maybe they shouldn't even bother. I sure wouldn't mind if Hollywood never put out this or Akira or that horrible Evangelion that I think has been long dead but the point remains.

Try not to sleep with the lead actress again, Kristen Stewart wasn't it.

Never got round to seeing the original film.

Yeah, 2030 when Cameron is in his 80's. The Avatar sequels are coming out in 2016 and 17, right?

The next 5 years are going to be insanely crowded for blockbusters.

You forgot the third Avatar sequel, coming out in 2018.

I doubt he's ever going to make Battle Angel.

Yeah, we need to know who's writing the movie. The script was Snow White's problem, not the direction. There is little a director can do to remedy bad pacing when the screenplay is written like shit.

So in GITS there's a small worldbuilding detail about how Major chose a common-looking mass-production type body to help with espionage. Not that we actually ever saw other Major look-alikes but the idea is believable.

I'd like to see them include this little tidbit in the LA movie and make Scarjo play other minor roles as background characters to make it seem like some major corporation designed a body modeled after Scarjo, which is wildly popular among the cyborg public.

Every girl looking like ScarJo would only bring World Peace. Plot hole right here.

Is that also present in Shirow manga ? Her doll look in Oshii film makes a lot of sense and he plays with that idea she looks like a commoner. But i don't remember that from Shirow's stories.

Well yeah, not because audiences won't accept it, but because Hollywood is a cesspool for ignorant bullshit.
