SCEE president says "stop the madness"

Its about time someone said this for all games in the UK. Paying 40 quid for a game is an absolute joke here, I always either import (at a cheaper price for Gamecube) or wait untill prices have dropped.

With UK casual gamers having crap gaming taste doesn't help, where they'd easily pay 40-50 quid for some movie liscenced-pimp-my-ride shit.

go play.com! (and screw rip-off swedish shops, 65€ for a game.. wtf!)
i almost buy all my games from uk now..

He's not saying this though...he's saying games SHOULD be sold at RRP (£40). He's a fucking idiot if he thinks that is going to work

Sorry didn't read the post right!

Lets put this into perspective for US Gaffers. £40 = $76. Now do you really want to pay that everytime you want to buy a newly released game?

fuck no.

The sad thing is, these casual gamers are, and thats why we get pieces of liscensed crap like Fifa Street dominating our charts and making shit games successful.

SCEE are loving this. Of course, they have to make noises to support the RRP, as they want to maintain their margin on sales.

This current price cut is retailer led, and Sony still keep their full margins, so the only people hurting are the retailers. But if it becomes a standard price point, there will be pressure on SCEE to cut the margin they take, which they don't want to do.

Exactly. The industry over here has survived on £40 price points before but that was years ago. I can't remember the last time I paid close to £40 for a new PAL release. Hell, I can't remember the last one that cost more £35.

I get my games from Amazon or Play - £30 and I get them on release day 9 times out of 10. I've also started using an indy in Wales who does mail order. He sells games for £29 inc. postage and I know the owners pretty well so I can't complain about their service in any way

The days of £40 games are LONG gone for me...if they ever come back then I'll just import or ditch the Playstation brand altogether

£40 will come back for PS3, along with an official SCEE price cut for PS2 games. Until then, they'll let the retailers bleed.

Ahhhh I still remember the days of £50/£60 games, £40 still seems ok to be because of this. XD

Remember when the first Turok came out on the 64 and it was 70 quid!!

I spent loads on my N64 games :(

Ah, I remember the days of 10 pound C64 cassette games :lol...seems like a lifetime ago now. Of course the loading times averaged about 5 minutes, but at least you got some decent tunes to listen to while you waited (Ocean Loader tunes > you).

'Ah, I remember the days of 10 pound C64 cassette games...'
... you paid 10 pounds per C90 ? ;)

The C64 = the days when i'd play games that were "okay" so i could here Hubbard and co. ROCK my earbuds...

I used to play Commando over and over again, just to hear the tune...
and monty on the run...
and countless others...

C64 = bliss machine x 1,000,000

And if you got bored of good tunes, you could go round to a mates house and listen to the Speccy "fart" whilst it drowned in a bath of colour clash!

Ah, those days rocked. Mastertronic, Firebird, codemasters... 1.99 a game, and some were absolutely fantastic. :(

Saying all that, i remember Megadrive games being pricey. Ghouls and Ghosts for 44.99 was particularly harsh.

This is just the same as the last gen with PS1, started at £45/£40 at the start and is now pretty well £30. I agree PS3 will put it back up to £45/£40, at least: there are quite a lot of noises from the publishers at the moment that the next gen of games will have to be even more expensive - What planet are they from?

What he actually getting at is the shops should'nt be giving the impression that when the next gen games are priced at £44.99 that we as gamers won't think we are getting ripped off.

"when the getting short stead of exciting then when original exciting £44.99."

Did SCEA completely bail on their $39 standard?
"Premium" games like God of War, GT4 or Killzone are all coming in at $50 again. I think $40 is reserved for secondray stuff now (989 Sports, Neopets, etc).

See this is why you Americans annoy me :D :lol We're complaining about £40 games and you lot complain about games being $50! (£25) We'd be happy if our games were the equivalent of $50!!

Australians pay $89-95 for new games, typically. I feel your pain, UK Gaffers.

As much as I think our pricing sucks, I know Australia (and the rest of PAL-land) gets shafted even more than Britain does - usually £5-10 more per game :o

Well, my games are the equivalent of $50. Why aren't you importing? :P

I'm not sure that the impact on next-gen will be too significant as he's saying, but the move to $9.99 games just about broke the PS1 business, and it looked like it would impact PS2 for a while there too. Why take a chance on a new game at full-price when you can get 2 Greatest Hits for the same price? Everything but the AAAs got hurt in the PS1 days, although most people were putting their dollars away for PS2 at the time.

It's a ton of money to keep a gaming habit, but there are a few things that I understand and grin and bear.
