Secret best feature of 3ds XL: ds games will now be 'playable' at 1:1.

Reggie confirmed DS compatibility in the Nintendo Direct video. When he was talking about Pokémon Black 2 and White 2, he said that Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL owners can look forward to Pokédex 3D Pro and Pokémon Dream Radar.

Thanks, I think it basically confirms it! They removed GB compatibility from DSi, so it's safe to be cautious :D

Not sure he's saying what you said, but could see how it could come across that way. Think he may have been saying that there's no 3DS games you have to get a 3DS for, right now, so if there's not DS games you have to play, it's fine to wait. Maybe.
Maybe he had some info regarding the 'new' console? Maybe their next console is not going to be backward compatible with 3DS

He also said wait till this 'holiday' season, in his previous posts, which doesn't match with XL release date:

meltdowns of Nintendo announcing a new handheld will be catastrophic.

Or maybe he simply had wrong/outdated info, I think it may even happen with him.

So have we done the math yet? Will the 1:1 mode on the 3DS XL be identical in size to an original DS screen? Slightly smaller? Slightly bigger? It seems close, anyway.

Unless my math is wrong, it works out to about 5.1 x 6.8 cm. The DS screen is 4.6 x 6.2, so each side is extended by about 10%.

More often than not, high PPI screens are a boon when content is designed specifically for them. The Game Boy micro can be a pain to use if your eyesight isn't perfect. iPhone 4 screens looks huge on computer monitors.

In most cases, larger screens/pixels mean you can see in greater detail at a further distance.

Damn, so the games still wouldn't look as good as a dsi xl. I wouldn't want to play DS games 1:1 on a huge system with wasted screen space. I'll just use my old DS for that. I thought it was going to use the whole screen and look nice like the dsi xl.

There are not enough pixels in either 3ds model to do that. Sorry.

You'd have to find something that's a multiple of BOTH the 3DS and DS resolutions, which would probably make a Retina Display look like a Game Boy (assuming you could even tell a difference at that density anyway).
Because OLEDs look really fucking good. And pretty much just don't have ghosting.

This was one of the first things I got excited about.
But I won't be using it for DS, and instead all VC games I've bought.

Admittedly when I think about it... The DSi is STILL preferable, though at least the 3DS XL seems better for if I'm on a trip or whatever and want both 3DS and DS games.

This was my first thought. It will still be awkward with the big black regions, but DSiWare becomes a lot more attractive. (Shame about the space limit.)

Not getting rid of my DSiXL, though.

Certain DS/DSiWare games play much better with the circle pad. Solatorobo and SM64 DS come to mind.

It is? Fuuu..

It'll be much, much easier to use.

yeah, I had to get a grip with extended handles to use the dpad comfortably on the 3DS... it was just too close to the bottom of the system for my thumb to use it without cramping.

That extra space below the dpad on the 3DS XL was one of the first things I noticed. It looks like it will be much more comfortable to use.

Haven't seen ghosting on the 3DS. You referring to 3-D crosstalk? Anyone have experience with 3-D glassless OLED screens?
No, I mean ghosting. Admittedly LCDs have gotten better and better at minimizing it over time, but OLED's right there with CRT in responsiveness. You'd probably still have crosstalk, it's undoubtedly an inevitable part of glasses-less 3D.
