so, if I hate the characters and how they are written in the first episode, I can stop watching it?

It's a honest question. My best friend loves it, and I really really did not like the first episode but would try watching the second episode if it gets better..

Watch 3-4 episodes and if you still don't like it, you probably won't like the rest of the series. There are major scenes in ep3 and ep4 which set the tone for the rest of the series in ways which the first two episodes do not.

I'm frankly surprised at the amount of coordination alone on the production side if it's all shot more or less in each city. Especially when characters cross into another's scenes even for mere moments.
Oh of course, there must have been a lot of very good planning to pull off a lot of these sequences. I certainly don't want to suggest the technique they used was logistically simple.

It's even more crazy since there were 4/5 directors who also used their own regular DPs.

I'm frankly surprised at the amount of coordination alone on the production side if it's all shot more or less in each city. Especially when characters cross into another's scenes even for mere moments.

I think the most likely way they did it was to basically re-shoot the scene with all of the dialogue present in every location that the characters are in, to keep the flow of the conversations from feeling too disjointed. If they just shot only the dialogue pieces that happen in each location, I think we'd notice much more acutely that the dialogue is a bunch of broken pieces cobbled together. It would be much easier to weave together the same scene with multiple takes in multiple locations to make it seem like one cohesive conversation then try and make broken up pieces of a conversation feel like one single discussion.

And this is why it's a show that couldn't happen anywhere but cable or Netflix, since the whole show and every scene would need to be shot before it's pieced together. And it's probably why the show even exists, since the TV landscape allows for that now.

It may be where some of the acting complaints come from as well, that despite this technique, people can still notice emotional or tonal differences in the way the scenes are edited together that take them out of the moment.

I've been idly thinking about what this would look like with a super massive budget... I'm imagining some of Speed Racer's techniques of melting time and space into single shots and taking that to the next level. Forget hot-swapping characters and locations through straight edits, and just flow freely between them in frame. Oh man.

Speed Racer is cinematic brilliance.

Clearly they spent all the budget elsewhere, so the opening credits are just whatever the hell the Wachowskis and Bill Pope John Toll could point the camera at between setups.

Speed racer might have not been a good movie, but i still say it is one of the most beautiful HD movies i have ever seen... such amazing use of colors

Yeah, there sure is a big girl on a girl scene in the first episode. But it ain't no thing. We've watched GoT together, and were smoking a bowl anyway.

Wait, you were sitting there with your mother watching Game of Thrones smoking up together?

I wish I had that relationship with any of my family.

I'm now watching episode 7 and two things are jumping out at me:
Riley's dad is adorable, and I am beyond tired of ridiculous television and movie "hacking" bullshit, like Nomi did with the Dr.'s phone.

You're not really listening to people when they correct you, are you?

Do you even read, cmon. She's trangender not transsexual

On that note I marathoned the show and really enjoyed it. Riley reminds me of a girl I was with in real life, instant crush.

Who? The actor or the actress or the character?

It is a transsexual being played. Unless you think I'm talking about a transvestite.

Michael becomes Nomi, so a transsexual. From one sex to another.

Dude, stop.

Power rankings after finishing the season:

1. Lito
2. Sun
3. Kala
4. Nomi
5. Capheus
6. Wolfgang
7. Will
8. Riley (ugh)

The actress is transgender, as is the character she is playing.

I'm gonna give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you aren't trolling. So save yourself and everyone else the headache and avoid using the term transsexual. Don't open up this can of worms.

I know it's corny and the dialogue isn't good but I've already gotten into a number of the characters. Was pretty pumped to watching Van Damme in episode 3.

Could someone please explain to me the difference between someone who identifies themselevs as Transgender verse someone who identifies themselves as Transsexual? I thought someone being a Transexual implies that the person has had some form of gender reassignment surgery, and is no longer the same gender they were at birth. Aka Nomi was 'Michael' at birth. Sorry for my ignorance :) Would love for someone to clear this up for me now, so I don't run into the risk of offending someone in the future!!

I would keep going if you have the time. There are some pretty poor actors in this, and so the first 4 or 5 episodes spent establishing their characters can be a little rough. As they get more to do action wise, and start interacting more, the bad acting gets more forgivable.

Episode 110:
whyyyyyyyy I mean I get it thematically but whyyyyyyyyyyy

Peak Wachowski self indulgence right here.
Maybe it's because my two kids were c-section but I found that scene and it's impication kinda offensive. Not one of the others was even born in a hospital, except for Nomi. They show her being born by c-section with drugs being administered and it seems to imply that this is a horrible thing and indicative of what a terrible unempathetic mother she is. Left a bad taste in my mouth, especially for such a non-judgmental show

Finally got through all 12 episodes. Not good. Not terrible. It's just kinda there. At this point I couldn't really care less if it got more seasons or not since I more than likely won't watch them. Netflix has been more hit than miss for me though, so I'm glad they keep investing in new shows.

Transgender people determine the term transsexual to indicate a cis-gender normativity. That is to say, that they're only another gender until the re-assignment surgery, when they want their identity as another gender acknowledged regardless of their physicality. Because that surgery is expensive and some people have to wait years to go through with it unless they have health insurance that covers procedures to treat gender dysphoria.

There is also the issue of transsexuals who undergo gender reassignment but do not associate their gender identity with their new physicality.

There's also the issue where gender identity before and after surgery has nothing to do with sex, making transgender a profoundly better catch-all term for pre-op and post-op individuals who suffer(ed) from gender dysphoria.

I hope that clears this up for anyone who was unsure.

Seriously, watching episode 2 and looking at his bulge makes me wondering, is it real?
He's a Spaniard. It's real.

Exactly my thoughts.. as if by having a C Section the person will definitely have a grudge on their mother. It didnt make any sense.

I finished yesterday and I just cant put my finger on it. I really liked the way the characters help each other but the story has so many holes that it´s just unforgivable.
I mean, the way they all simply accepted the powers. At some point I wasnt even sure Lito knew he had this ability... only to have him show up
and help the german guy to lie
.
There were amazing scenes.
The karaoke/what´s up scene was incredible and also the Lito/Nomi conversation had me in tears
but COME ON!!!The show seems to simply put a enemy plot for the sake of it and
a fog just because the helicopter wouldnt be able to fly through it???

They sould have ditched the whole whispers plot and keep it just the story between the characters.

I wasn't sure how to read that. Was the specific scenario of her birth troubling to her, or just not happy to think about her mother and the implications of naming her Michael? It was definitely odd that Nomi, out of all of them, was the one to be born via c-section. I really couldn't tell if the show was trying to say something or not. Seemed weird and unclear. Almost a third of American births are by c-section, who cares.

Honestly, the birth scene bothered me a lot more than the orgy scene. It was way too graphic. Did not need to see the head.

Finished the second part of the show, episodes 5-8.

Seems to pick up a bit. I think it was smart not to entirely throw the metaplot on everyone just yet. Seems to mostly be contained to Jonas-Will-Nomi right now.

I actually sort of like that they linger quite a bit on just having two characters interact as they intercut. Even if it's the both of them reveling in how crazy it is they can "feel" everything about the other place they're in. Most shows try to just squeeze in character moments just before something plot important gets going. Glad to see there's usually some restraint but if you're not in for that I can see why it can be offputting. It almost feels like a response to people who enjoy characters just interacting/talking but the urgency of serialized TV usually robs them of longer moments. Feels more novel-like sometimes in a way, in a good way though IMO. The lines aren't always great, sometimes a bit cheesy, too on the nose but the overall tone is strong.

Capheus coming into people's worlds is always fun to see, he always has a blast.

Interesting but also disconcerting a bit is that some characters are very isolated. Lito, Kala, Riley, Wolfgang don't really interact too much. Their plots move at their own particular pace.

Lito's plot is a lot of fun, but I think it's gonna start dialing up the drama now. Expecting predictable turns but the cast of Mexico is really great to watch anyway.

Riley doesn't seem to have much to do besides playing off Will or some other people who jump in. Her romance with will I rather like too. The hex thing about her and her mother seems to move really slowly. I think she's probably what's gonna bore most people unless something big happens soon.

I was definitely expecting the obvious ones of the 8 to jump in when Nomi was in trouble but I was delighted to see Capheus pop in and lend his driving skills and JCVD knowledge.

Otherwise I kinda just enjoy the show as the separate plots move on their own and sometimes someone from the cluster interjects and they just talk or they blunder about for a bit. The big
conspiracy thriller sci-fi plotline has barely moved and doesn't really interest me in the slightest.

I finished Sense8 today. Overall I felt this show was average just like Dare Devil. Both shows have some flaws that doesn't make me very excited to watch a new episode like Game of Thrones or iZombie continued to do.

I see potential but I don't know if I'll immediately watch season 2.

Lito:
My favorite character and his supporting cast was excellent. A lot of people made fun of cheesy lines but it was that dialogue that kept the show fresh and amusing while I tolerated some other story arcs. Also some of the dialogue people felt was too cheesy or on the nose like why be jealous of the arm when you have my heart was actually well delivered. My major problems with Lito was how disconnected he was from most of the cluster and when he finally starts forming a connection he was very slow in following their wiser advice. At least he turned things around when he stopped giving a damn about people knowing his preferences.

Noami:
My second favorite character. She never leaves a mark as high as Lito's but she doesn't drop into his lows either. Some people disliked her monologues but I've been eating that shit up since Gundam Wing so this never bothered me.

If you want terrible monologues check out Log Horizon Season 2. *wretches*

Sun:
I'm glad she wasn't overutilized. There were so many reasons she could've been mishandled but thankfully wasn't. I love that she stayed in prison the whole time.

Will:
I like him as character. I don't like the plotlines he's been put in. I feel this character and the actor has been mishandled. Does everyone with a speaking line in Chicago have to look bad or terrible just to make William look all the better? Did he really need to be tied so closely to Riley?

Wolfgang:
He's one of my 2 least favorite Sense8 characters. What rates him so highly is everything else that is around him. Someone suggested dropping Wolfgang or merging him with other characters but that would mean dropping his pseudo brother Felix and we can't have that happening. Felix is awesome! That whiney gangster son was so on point on being a manbaby I was thoroughly enjoying him being a wreckless idiotic douche. Kala's presence also helps. Even though he is among my least favorite Wolf Gang holds a very unique position of being an unrepentant criminal that we shouldn't be rooting for. He adds a dynamic to the cluster that has so much potential to help everyone grow as individuals.

Kala:
Is almost as flawed as Wolfgang but I felt she got a lot better as the show progressed. The same strengths present in the Wolfgang storylines are present in Kala's.

Capheus/Van Damme:
I really like the character and his storyline more than Kala's and Wolfgang's but I'm left with a very large concern he'll be misused or underutilized in season 2 and made completely irrelevant or dead by season 3. I see the potential for his character to grow beyond the confines of his dead end plot line but the writers have to be aware that they can't have him keep on doing the same things.

Riley:
Yuck. She's pretty is the only thing I can say positive about this character. Reboot her in season 2.

Somethings I hope to see in season 2.

Capheus' has a growing relationship with Simbaca as a surrogate father. Sun getting out of jail and justice for her father's death. Danellia to become more intimate with Lito and Hernando. (sorry boys but she's way too hot to leave her out of certain scenes *woof*). This show taking up the challenge of what it means to be in relationship and being part of a family. Avoid falling into the trap of having only one major conspiracy as the looming enemy.

Am I the only one who likes the opening credits? Gorgeous shots and I really dig the music.

I haven't watched landscape porn that gratifying since Lord of the Rings.

I didn't know JMS is the lead writer. I'll definitely watch Season 2 now. Babylon 5 was excellent and he's putting the same level of effort in this one. I'll give season 1 a pass on the weakness I felt it had.

The line you cite was also immediately laughed at by the characters as being a cornball movie line. I think some of cheesy or self-aware dialogue worked better in Lito's story due to the different tone and the heightened Mexican action/soap star elements. For me, some dialogue that may have been objectively similar in Nomi's storyline was harder to swallow due to the more serious and dangerous nature of that plot.

Echoing the sentiments that its very Cloud Atlas. Really started enjoying it the end of
Episode 3 where I was rooting for Bae Doona to whoop some ass.
Hope it continues to get better. <3

Wow episode 10 got pretty graphic in ways I wasn't expecting.

But I particularly loved the
Lito and Wolfgang
teamup. That was just pure fun.

Wasn't really feeling episode 4. They tried really hard to integrate that song as the soundtrack to everyone's situation and I just didn't get it.

You know, that scene at the end of the very last episode
with all the sensates on the boat
would make a very good wallpaper.

Is there a way to find that pic in high quality?

Maybe go to the PC Netflix and screen cap the still you want with it in full screen mode?

All in all this show gave me feels. It has a soul. The stereotypes sometimes verge on the insulting (like
the Mexican guy saying that's what Mexican peeps do, we hit women)
and the
big bad is so silly, predictable and thin
. The hacking was so 1995 it was unreal. And yet, I've been recommending this to friends who like character driven shows. I liked it. It was great. Made me want to travel the world again.

Watched two episodes before I became bored to the point of tears. The trailers painted it out to be a really interesting new series, but alas it's not (IMO).
