Shadow of the Collossus is so simple.. Why hasn't anyone been anylblevto replicate it?

Any "game idea" can be simple. But producing a compelling game from that is another story as there are many others important factors to make a great game.

It's like writing simple words like "able to". Sometimes it just doesn't work in the end for x or y reasons. :messenger_beaming:

At the time, I couldn't believe they were able to pull this off on a PS2.

Felt well ahead of its time.

Totally. SOTC was crazy ambitious from a technology standpoint. Unfortunately it showed in the frame-rate, but that's what happens when a team fully commits to achieving such a challenging goal.

Its the best example I can think of as to why chasing frame-rate targets isn't ideal for creativity. Getting that game to run at a solid 30, let alone 60 on console hardware of its time would have required so much to be cut-down or simplified that it would've made the whole exercise pointless.

Agreed, the game seems like everything Gaf should hate but somehow that's not the case. Empty world with nothing to do except a boring ride to the next boss, terrible controls, climbing consists of pressing the analog stick and holding R, no story to speak of up to the point I played. The only interesting part is figuring out how to mount the boss.
Yup, exactly.
Somehow this is handwaved away because of "art", but the gameplay is really poor. It was awesome in its day and a foreshadowing of the open worlds to come, but there's really nothing to do except the colossus fights, and those are amazing for all reasons except the fun of playing.

How is this a negative? It's called Shadow of the Colossus. Sounds like you have the same thought process that the devs of Praey to the Gods had, including crafting and survival and a load of other shit that no one cared about.

Shadow of the Colossus gets everything right, with the art direction, sound, world.., just everything.

It's not so easy to replicate, and to be Frank I think it's difficult to do so because it feels like a one and done concept. I don't think the market's big enough for that type of game.

I just replayed SOTC recently.

It's one of the greatest games ever made imo.

There isn't many games that can pull off that level of emotion with about 500 words in total.

With TLG, it's not as good overall, but Trico itself is an astonishing work of art. It's still the best creature in any game.

Team Ico was special.
