Shawn Layden: “Nintendo can charge whatever it wants for new first-party Switch 2 titles. In the end, people will buy them anyway.”

No lies detected.

Nintendo is the only publisher who can keep their titles full price and still chart continuously.

Finally some fucking sense! Cannot believe the bullshit around game prices when they were higher YEARS ago! Entitled cunts who play games today. Like I've said in other threads, come to Australia and try buy Playstation games...

I don't think this is true at all. Just because the switch was successful, doesn't mean it will just continue. The n64, GameCube, and WiiU weren't successful at all. People don't JUST buy all things Nintendo.

The switch succeed because it was a hybrid, Nintendo was making great games, and it was cheap. It was $200-$300 dollars with $50-$60 dollar Nintendo games. That was cheap. You could buy multiple systems for your family. But that's not the case with Switch 2. $450 is no longer a multiple impulse purchase for the kids. Same with $80 games.

I think game share, both the lending digital games and the sharing one copy to multiple systems, will help with this but it is naive and recency bias to say that Nintendo can do whatever they want with no worries.

Kind of an idiotic take.

There is a point where the price would obviously matter a whole lot. There's only so much the market will absorb. Consumers may not feel the need to upgrade from MK8 to Mario Kart World. In fact, MK8 is perfect pick up and play party game by itself which is why it's sold so well. Mario Kart World adds a bunch of single player type stuff with the open world which while I love as a single player gamer, doesn't add any value to a huge portion of people that play the game casually as a party title

That's why subsequent iterations of Wii Sports really didn't sell nearly as well. The first one already did the job and served the market need.

Former PlayStation boss Shawn Layden said Nintendo can charge what it wants for new first-party Switch 2 games because Nintendo makes compelling games. Some people might perceive the price increase for a game like Mario Kart World ($80) as being "hefty," Layden said, but in the end, people will buy it anyway.

Why did I read this in Morgan freeman's voice

Some games are worth more than x standard price. Just like some are worth less. Mario Kart and gta6 can command $80, but $80 AC might backfire and convert day-oners to wait-for-salers.

I love the statement 'people will buy it anyway', as though it makes no difference whether it's two people buying it or 20 million people buying it.

They can only charge 'whatever they want' in exactly the same literal sense that everyone else can. If they raise prices they will sell fewer copies, so it's a matter of determining the optimal price point to maximise profit, as it is for everyone.

Of course they can't. But they can try to push the limit to see how far they can go.

The only reason they feel they can do this is because they've been extremely successful and the last title sold +60M. They would've never pulled this "variable pricing" crap if they'd be coming from another WiiU failure.

And people always seem to confuse suggested retail prices with what you actually ebd up paying in reality. Plus this time round Nintendo are pushing digital games more as they are arounf $10 cheaper than the physical releases. This could have a knock on effect for retailers of physical games. Although in the U.K it's very easy to pick up games £10 or so less on launch. I don't think I have ever paid full retail on a physical videogame. And yes this launch will be epic in terms of sales. Nintendo have just made a lot of consoles available but I still see the thing selling out.

I won't. Sentiment around the internet is not great
What?. Core hobby video gamers on niche internet sites. And YouTubers with very few subscribers and views are upset by all this. Imagine my total shock and horror. ;)

I am not so certain it's going to fully payoff in the long run. You have a higher cost console and higher cost games.

A lot of reason Switch sold so many units is that multiple Switches were bought in households with kids and a lot of casuals bought in.

A $500 Switch 2 is going to sell fine to the fan base, but it's not going to sell multiple consoles into a lot of families. And it's unknown if casuals will buy in as much either.

And you got $80-90 games on top of that. I mean even Zelda, ie TOTK didn't sell nearly as well as BOTW and it sold to a larger audience considering number of consoles at launch. Part of that may have been the $70 price.

I could be completely off base and the first year will be strong either way, but it's going to be interesting to see what happens year 2 and 3. Plus the economy all over is teetering on recession threshold thanks to our Grand Poobah in US.

"In 2025 dollars, $59.99 in 1999 is equivalent to $100. Your purchasing power compared to your cost of living, it's much smaller now than it was before, but still companies have been reluctant to push that price up," he said, adding that he thinks publishers should have charged $5 more for new games each new console generation.
I don't get the logic here - it seems to me like he is saying that purchasing power has decreased as a result of higher cost of living outpacing wage growth, but then he goes to argue that when people can effort less companies should charge them more?

Companies have developed multiple complementary revenue streams to mitigate the high budgets while keeping the same sticker price - GAAS, preorder bonuses, exclusive editions with yearly access, DLC. He knows that very well, he is being disingenuous by pushing a narrative.

Whether the Switch 2 can replicate the success of the Switch with a much higher price and much higher priced games is going to be an interesting one for the history of gaming.
It will not, and that is not Nintendo's goal. I will argue they know very well they have reached the ceiling, so the only way to increase profits is to milk your playerbase more, it's business 101. This higher price points, let functionalities tied to NSO, etc.

Yes because Sony fans won't buy the next God Of War for $80, like we need to stop acting like it is only Nintendo man every developer or franchise has its diehard fans Nintendo just happened to have more of them because their games are easily accessible for younger people who grow up with them

I dated this girl who owned a switch and she had this like 32 inch tv. Not sure if she played the Switch docked or undocked, but she was a librarian and she would borrow games from the library in order to play.

There is ZERO chance she's going to buy a switch 2 for 450 and the games at libraries for Switch are going to be fewer and far between if they costs 70+ dollars.

My nephew owns a Switch, PS5, and a gaming PC. He games almost exclusively on his gaming PC, but will sometimes play Switch for Mario Kart. It's very up in the air as to whether he'll ask for or buy a switch 2 just for Mario Kart and he's the type of kid who watches hours of YouTubers playing Mario Kart so that he can know every secret shortcut, but is that worth it to him for 450? He's looking forward to Silksong but he'll get that on PC...

You're likely right. They can always reduce prices if necessary once they have milked the die hard fans.

Economy is in the shitter. Games are expensive. Console is $150 more.

Not sure what the confusion is

They could increase their prices tenfold, they'll still have the hardcore Nintendo fanbois out on the street corners like crackheads ready to do sumthin' strange for a bit of change.

I mean. There's some truth but also...I don't think so.

Unless I can pick up games for a little over what last gen switch games were....I'll just wait for a brick and morter to do a sale.

I'm willing to pay 54.99 to 64.99 game dependant on a switch 2 game.

Well, not everyone will. I certainly won't be.

Just checked the Argos website - first party Nintendo Switch games are generally £37.99. Mario Kart World is £74.99. That's 50p away from being double the price. I'm a lifelong Nintendo fan and I'm just not going to do it.

I don't think anyone would have predicted that the PS3 would sell significantly worse than the PS2 so early on or that the WiiU would have sold so much worse than the Wii or that the Xbox One would sell so much worse than the X360 or that the N64 would sell so much worse than the SNES and the Gamecube worse than the N64.
The fundamental problem is that R&D takes years and by the time Sony or Nintendo realizes that they have a hit they've already spent a fortune on the 'next thing'.
PS3 likely would've been a hit in an alternate universe where the PS2 had failed miserably.
WiiU likely would've done the same if the Wii had failed.

MS doesn't need more money - Xbox sales have always been irrelevant.
PS3 having more in common with the 360 than the PS2 was a massive win for MS.
All the moves PS made to compete with Xbox were in the wrong direction.

There is nothing you wrote here that made any sense and I'm struggling to see whether you're out here trolling or if you actually believe the tripe you just wrote.

Shawn laydown the pipe.

He is probably right unfortunately but i would laugh my ass off if parents around the world decide that nintendo price point is now too high and that little timmy can continue to play with switch 1.

The gamecube, wiiu and the 3ds launch are proof that not even Nintendo gets a free pass.

Yes the initial launch will sell out to the most hardcore enthusiasts, just like the wiiu did at its launch, but after that it wont be so easy. The mass market will decide if the prices are fair or not.

A little weird for him to say that bit about 1999's $59 games being $100 today, considering Sony brought down game prices via optical disc transition.

The attach rate for games is probably too high right now, though its lowering with the rise of Live Service games.

But, I also expect the result would be a lot of studios going out of business and the rise of AAAA gaming.

There use to tons of games that were good enough that I just didnt care how much they cost,
like FF7R, Kingdom Hearts

Now a days 90% of those games are made by Nintendo and 5% are from indies.

One of the reasons why PC gaming will always be GOAT.

So much choice where to buy games, i havent payed full price for a new game in years thanks to PC gaming.

He's right... to an extent

But I think the volume of purchases will decrease and more games will struggle to pull in adequate numbers.

The hightened price will inevitably drive higher expectations while also reducing the number of games that a person can buy within their financial means. As a result choices for the consumer become more critical and I suspect we'll see the key games, big 1st party stuff and to a lesser extent big 3rd party games, continuing to sell well while the rest of the ecosystem is likely to be deprived the benefit of impulse purchases and the risk taking they rely on consumers taking.

The Nintendo core fanbase yes. They will buy regardless.

What about the casual gamers who make up a massive majority of their user-base.

In fact every console user-base.
Ninny can always make price adjustments/promotions 2-3years in when switch2 already sold 50m units, mkw sold 20m+ units too :P

Not because poor Timmy would have to study first...

Eh, I don't know about that.

We've learned from the past that the group of people who "buy it anyway" is not that large. So, it really does depend on whether the average Joe thinks the prices are too high or not.

3 out of those 4 are home comsoles. Nintendo never had a main portable device flopping. Even when one of those home consoles you mentioned was flopping they had a successful portable console in stores.

Switch is perfect because it's the best of both worlds.
Nintendo never had the competition in the portable space they have today so... I would hold my breath before claiming anything...
