SHENMUE 3 kickstarter (PC/PS4) - FINAL DAY - NEW KS RECORD GO GO GO!

Just backed the 29$ tier. I would have backed the 60$ tier but the physical version is only for PC, anybody knows why there is no PS4 physical release?
Maybe I upgrade my pledge to the 60$ tier but it feels weird to buy a PC game physically anymore when you buy all your games on Steam.

HOLY HELL.
This is surreal, and strange too.

I mean, it isn't even a spiritual successor, it's the official sequel, but...HOW?!? I mean, who has the rights of Shenmue? In the SIII trailer part, I saw in the right corner "original games @ SEGA, @ Ys Net"

@= copyright symbol

Does it mean that Yu himself has the rights? Also, it seems to be its own project, not backed by Sony as a "mysterious publisher", going by Boyes' words on stage too.

He said a few years back that he could obtain the rights from Sega. I mean, they're not really using it.

;_;

the day has finally come. my blackened heart, rotted from so many ryo hazuki-less years, just gained a shade of color.

the world is finally starting to make sense again.

The lack of communication and clarity in this campaign is puzzling, if it was Mighty no 9 or Bloodstain, they will be all over social media and the campaign page answering questions and saying thank you. I wonder who is running this campaign from the west/english side.

Is probably late anyway, I guess they are sleeping or drunk in a bar, lol

I am speechless. As usual, I'm not funding this, because it will be successfull for sure, but it will be mine day one for sure. It is a dream, really...!

Most of EU was sleeping when the Sony press conference was aired (due to time zones etc). I imagine most of the Shenmue fans in EU will start backing the project in a few yours.

Would not be surprised if this Kickstarter project sets a new record in total funding for a videogame :D

We just want the story to conclude. Can't believe this is happening for both Shenmue and Twin Peaks after all those years.
Shenmue III doesn't have to be the best game ever.
Still it certainly will be a lot better than how the trailer looks.

Just buy them on PSN. Can't take long until they'll be made available.

Well, with Twin Peaks you sort of knew you had to wait 25 years...
Laura Palmer's doppelgänger told you so ;)
. Lunch is crazy enough to do such a thing IMHO :).

Tell me about it. Can someone ask Suzuki about this on twitter or somewhere?

"Joyous Greetings Shenmue Fans!
If you missed the announcement at the E3 Sony press conference--yes, this is Kickstarter for Shenmue 3, let there be no doubt! Fans everywhere have called for this day, and now the time has finally come.

It has been an emotional few hours already, and we have just started!
But first! Shout outs to Shenmue fans everywhere!
Your love, passion and dedication are the real reasons we are here. With a cliffhanger like that, every day was a lifetime not knowing what would happen next. But those lifetimes took on a world of their own, giving birth to a creative, energetic, and thriving community. And hilarious. Don’t want to forget hilarious.

Yu Suzuki still needs your help though, if Shenmue 3 is going to be the full-on Shenmue experience you have dreamed of. Share the project with every-one/thing/place you know! Random people on the street? Let ‘em know. Sailors in bars? Let ‘em know. Kickstarter vs. Shenmue 3 is the match of the century, so let’s get it on!

The fight starts now. Your backing and support will make Shenmue 3 all it can be. Pledging now will make the game better for everyone. There is no prize for coming late to the duck races. This is the big chance to give what we love to everyone around the world!
Let’s make history. Let’s make Shenmue 3.
Post it loud, post it proud!"

I kind of feel they aren't doing enough to get this recognised and appealing to fans. Bloodstained was massive. we had streams with big name youtubers showing their support, loads of info, reward options and encouraged to share stuff on social media. It was incredibly well organised.

This is Yu Suzuki. Remember how insane VF5 looked when it first released? I think they'll eventually bang out some awesome character models.

I think what we're seeing here right now is something built without any budget at all.

Yup. Oh man, also that extra disc that came with Shenmue on the Dreamcast that allowed you to look at all the character models' faces up close....those models looked incredible for their time. If the budget is there, Yu Suzuki goes for top tier.

They literally just sent out a thank you email :)

This is a good question and I would also like to know the answer :O

Nice, our turn Europe :)

They're gonna have to do a good job of filling me in with the story because it's been 10+ years since I played this last. All of it is very vague now. Hoping for a movie or HD remaster, at the very least.

Yeah, it's the insane hand-crafted experience shenmue offered. I always compare it most to Majora's Mask, except it was taken to a ridiculous level.

Again, I hope Yu Suzuki doesn't pull back his ambition at all.

I never got a sniff of Shenmue's level of detail in MM. Personally, the closest I've seen in a general atmosphere to Shenmue is Flotsam in The Witcher 2, but even then its not like it had that crazy 'life simulator' element that makes Shenmue truly stand alone.

The only thing that concerns me is the setting. Hong Kong was just... incredible. The scenes in Kowloon Walled City, in particular, just felt like a trip through an urban nightmare. I really want that experience back, but I'm not sure how that will happen when Ryo is spending most of his time in the country side.

Ok so after watching the video and reading through the page, there some weird things that stuck out:

  • The pitch video seemed a bit amateurish? Also what's with the awful dubbing (the game characters)? I get the old Shenmue dub had a certain "charm" but its 2015, dubs this bad shouldn't fly anymore (then again it doesn't seem clear they intent to dub the actual game into English which i misleading - or did I miss that)?
  • Since none of us are stupid, we can assume an outside publisher is involved. However, even if IGA didn't name them at the start, he was super upfront that most of the budget (if they only hit their goal) was coming from a publisher. Sure we can assume a publisher is involved here but I don't like that we HAVE to assume nor do I like that they aren't named (again we can assume Sony but we shouldn't have to assume shit).
  • Who is developing this game exactly? I see a list of people involved but I I can't link them all to one development house. Yooka-Laylee is Playtonic (ex-Rare). Bloodstained and Migthy No. 9 are Inticreates. Shenmue II is YsNet? Shibuya Productions? Neilo Inc?
  • Reward Tiers seem wonky? Like there should be more gradations? Maybe they calculated and felt it would be better this way though?
  • No budget breakdown. I hate when Kickstarters skip out on this :/
  • In general the writeup feels like it could be a lot more robust :/
If I missed any details please clear them up for me! I don't think this model is inherently problematic (using Kickstarter to gauge interest in niche games) but there are a bunch of things about this Kickstarter specifically that could have been done better or made more clear.

Some of this might have already been covered, but I do agree the overall project could be done a LOT better. I like that they had some in-engine footage, but everything else was kinda shit IMO. It's kinda amazing that they didn't even need a well done campaign to pull off this kinda success.

Regarding the development house, that was something I was curious about so I looked into it. It seems like it will be that Neilo Inc. company. They have already put up an ad look for various staff (lol that instills confidence!)

that's pretty much how it is, judging from the pictures from yoshida and suzuki

i expect we'll see a more active social media presence in the next couple of days

in other news, i think the big european wave is starting to happen now. i looked away and it jumped 10k

Most people are asleep right now, so the pledging will slow start a bit, the KS started a bit late in the day as well, things should really speed up again in 6 or so hours.

He probably wont anymore lol. He's probably in a bar right now, drunk and speaking gibberish

"And the sailors, and the dogbirds and remake... They were all real!"
I think Y2Kev's trolling days are over. After the disaster they suffered today it will be hard to troll anyone anymore without living in constant fear.

Why does it need to go through Kickstarter?

If MS determines to give Yu 2 millions, does it mean Shenmue 3 will be ported to Xbox One later (PS4/PC still get times exclusive).

If yes, then do it Phil Spencer.

this still of ryo looks a lot better than the others

actually the art is very interesting. it seems like they might not be trying to make it look too realistic, and instead trying to make it look like the concept art. interesting direction, actually.

Now that Rare is coming back, I would personally recommend that he move to MegaMan Legends 3, given that the Half Life 3 market is over saturated already
It's really, really hard to compete with Gabe Newell himself anyway.

Though MML3 is probably as close to definitively dead as it gets.
