Shining Force Neo (PS2) pics

Holy shit, as soon as I posted this Magic Box started generating an error saying the account had been suspended. Damn.

Max, from the original Sega Genesis Shining Force, will return in Neo as the main character. The game; however, will be an all-new, 3D title, not a remake. Battles will take place in real-time; the player will control Max, and the rest of the characters in the party will be A.I.-controlled. Also, battles will be initiated just by walking up to an enemy and attacking, like in Kingdom Hearts; there won't be a separate battle screen.
Sounds neat. But it's doesn't really sound like a Shining Force title, does it?

as i feared: it isn't an srpg at all. why they had to go and call it "shining force" rather than "shining something else" i don't know. fucking sega.

G-d damnit, don't those Sega morons know how to do ANYTHING right anymore.

*pissed*

Edit - I don't see Max there.

and in case you have any doubts about the game's genre, the first scan says "action rpg" on it in big katakana. bomb bomb.

Yeah, definitely an Action/RPG. The genre switch was revealed alongside the new title a couple weeks ago. I guess it just wasn't posted here?

From IGN:
As producer Youichi Shimosato (previous work as director on Shining Force III) explains to the magazine, the game was originally meant to be a simulation RPG like the classic Shining Force games. The team felt that it wasn't enough to simply take the original gameplay systems from the old titles and make the jump to 3D visuals. They at first considered adding realtime simulation elements to the game, but determined that this wouldn't work too well for the home market. One thing lead to another, and Shining Force Neo became an action RPG.

And, it's not alone: the latest Arc the Lad title, "Generation," is an Action/RPG as well. Seems to be a new trend...

Well, it is pretty looking. Hopefully it plays well. But I am REALLY not a fan of this whole "AI-controlled teammates" trend that has been going on lately in RPGs. I want to PLAY the damned game.

If the Shining games in the past 5 years have been any indication, this will suck ass just like the rest of them. The only difference is in the title this time, which will likely just make a larger group of people unhappy about the same amount of suckiness. :lol

It might be good, and I'll be getting it regardless since it is a Shining game. But they should NOT dilute the Shining Force games with ARPG nonsense, that's why we have Shining Tears, Shining Soul, etc.

The Shining Force games are great.....Thier has been Good Shining Force games in the last 5 years. You obvioulsy have never Played Shining Force 3 on the Saturn or Shining Force 3 Part 2 and 3 from Japan, if you think thier hasn't been a good Shining force in awhile. Also, the Remake of Shining Force 1 for the GBA is a good game.

But, to be fair, the ARPG Shining games have ranged from mediocre to downright shit. When they announced a new SHINING FORCE for the PS2 (at the same time they announced Shining Tears), it was assumed, rightfully so, that one (Tears) would be an ARPG and the other (Force) would go back to its SRPG roots.

It's sad that they both turned out to be ARPGs, and the only one to actually be a SRPG was the third one to be announced, the admittedly well done (if too easy) GBA remake of the original SF.

I will say I was a bit dissapointed that Shining force Neo was not an SRPG, but to say the Shining ARPG is crap is a bit of an exaggeration. Both shining in the Darkness and Shining the Holy Arc are really good first person RPGs for thier times, especialy Shining the holy Arc. I agree with you when it come to Shining Soul games on the GBA. Another great ARPG by the makers of the old Shining force series was Land stalkers. Though I don't think it is part of the Shining Force universe.
I agree i wished Shining force was a SRPG, thier haven't been may is generation besides the one by Nippon Ichi or the Front mission game. Shining Force was always different. it was more fun and less complex. I miss that out of this generation's SRPG.

Shining in the Darkness and Shining of the Holy Ark are not ARPGs, they are traditional, turn based RPGs, though they adopt the 1st person perspective for exploration purposes as well as combat. Explore like in the older Might & Magic games, fight in the same perspective ala Dragon Warrior. And yes, for the most part, I liked them too.

But Shining Soul was terrible, Shining Soul II was improved, but outclassed by similar games also on the GBA, Shining Wisdom was pretty bad too. I guess the jury is still out on Shining Tears.

It's just NOT a promising way to unleash a new "Shining Force" particularly since it won't really have much of what makes a Shining Force title a Shining Force title! They also tried bringing back characters from the classic SF games to the Shining Soul games, and that certainly didn't make them better either.

IIRC, most of the earlier Shining games were created by the team that eventually became Camelot (of Golden Sun and Mario Sports title fame), and the Landstalker crew were a totally different team. Landstalker did rock, however.

meh, im getting ultra tired of AI controlled team mates. tehy ar enever programmed well. if you cant program intensive AI routines, why bother making games.
i was expecting a SRPG.

This is indeed disappointing... the "Shining" games seem to have lost that unique flavour they once had. The ARPG thing is definitely getting over the top, but on the other hand, the Hitmaker team shold be given the benefit of the doubt, as they have a fine track-record.
