Actually, I think it looks ugly. I'm more of a fan of having that "book" look to a shelf. Different sizes and different shapes, different placements. The standardized CDs and DVDs make shelves look sterile and boring.
I'm with Sebastard - HAAAATE when game cases are anything but what is standard. Like, to a point where I hate how the PSP and PS3 spines have changed during the lives of the libraries. That totally drives me nuts. Or the fact that one game in my PS3 collection - Resistance - is one of those stupid red cases. I got it from Goozex, not knowing it would be, and the instant I got it I no longer wanted it.
I'm already not a fan of collector's editions, but I
specifically won't buy them because they're typically stupid, goofy one-off cases. I also hate when the standard case is somehow different, and I'm not given the choice at all; for example, in my Blu-ray library, Iron Man can't be mixed in with the rest of the titles, because it has a cardboard slip case (ugh), but unlike the rest of the ones I've bought like that the actual case itself is
not a standard case. Like, as in, the cover isn't a full cover, and is specifically meant to be paired with that slip case. So, it keeps the slip case, but then has to be on the end by itself.
Also, while I'm not really a books kind of person, I have had manga collections, and when I did I first sorted my collection by physical size and then alphabetically. No way in the world could I stand to look at the shelf if I had books of all different sizes just mixed in together. *laughs* I'd rather throw the entire collection away and no longer have it than look at that.
And yes, I'm quite aware so people will think I'm utterly insane.
