Show us your gaming setup: 2012 Edition

I'm still trying to decide on color scheme before the next Herman-Miller sale, because I'm definitely buying one of these sonbitches. Thinking about going with grey fabric and black everything else... don't really wanna get super colorful with my computer chair.

But yeah, right now I have some Ikea piece of shit that's insanely uncomfortable. Can barely enjoy playing Torchlight II in that thing.

If I can give you some advice - I'd recommend eschewing the Herman Miller... and instead opt for a height adjustable desk + steelcase leap stool for sitting goodness.

Don't get me wrong... I love my embody... but if I had known about the benefits of standing desks, I would've opted for what I'm suggesting now.

Indeed, when I have a bit of spare cash, that'll be what I'll be upgrading my current setup to.

There have just been too many times where I've thought to myself - would be good to stand for a bit to relieve that tension in my back.

The simple reason is that - the body needs to move - irrespective of how comfortable a single position is, it doesn't stay comfortable for long. While a dynamically adjustable ergonomic chair like the Herman Miller provides some of that benefit, a standing desk with stool option simply provides a larger dynamic range of motion.

You'll want the nice stool for when your feet and legs get tired of course.

The 7.1 surround sound system consists of Genelec speakers used by many movie and gaming sound studios as monitors to master their music - the idea being that this easy I can hear the music as close to the intended mix. For example, Kojima and Platinum use Genelecs as monitors for Metal Gear Rising and Nightwish used them for their latest album, Imaginarium.

• 7.1 Speakers - 3 x Genelec 8040, 4 x Genelec 8020, 1 x Genelec 7050B sub
• TV - Sony 52X2000 1080P LCD
• AV receiver - Sony 5300ES

I know this post was a way while back and not sure if you follow this thread but how come you mixed the 8040s with the 8020s for the surround setup?

I actually did give some thought to going the stool route at some point, because I'd heard the sort of stuff you're saying, but I ultimately decided against it just because I'm thinking about the computer desk I have right now, and the one I plan on getting and... yeah, can't see myself really having a situation where a stool would work.

But yeah, the biggest problem I have with my current chair isn't that I'll get uncomfortable after a while. It's that it sucks to use at all.

Black on white looks really slick IMO, if I were to ever switch my Aeron to an Embody, thats the colour combo I would get, OR white on white if I plan to never wear dark denim ;)

I know this post was a way while back and not sure if you follow this thread but how come you mixed the 8040s with the 8020s for the surround setup?

History of my setup is that I got my first Genelec pair, the 8040s, from a friend. When it came time to pick the surrounds, 8030s just felt too massive for the purpose. And expensive, of course.

A Genelec employee said it's ok to mix two series up or down, the key thing supposedly is that surrounds are all same size and fronts are all same size.

If I get rich I might upgrade, of course. But already now as is, they truly are speakers of gods.

Hmm... you're right. That looks pretty damn good. It's kinda weird - on the store page, the white frame looks more yellow-ish than in the picture you posted. Well, whatever. I like that. Looks classy, and avoids looking too futuristic.

Anyway, if I'm not mistaken, the next sale is in December... so I suppose that's when I'll finally be buying this. Gonna be sweeeeet.

Where do they go on sale, and how much do they cost. I want one, but > $1K is too rich for my blood. Ideally I'd like to spend about $500. Am I out of luck?

Herman Miller has a semi-annual sale that should be coming up soon. Smart Furniture is probably their most popular online dealer. Even with the sale, you'll still be looking at around $1000. Consider the Sayl, as it is one of their cheaper models.

It's a semi-annual sale, and stuff is 15% off. The last one is in June, so logically, the next one will be in December. I think. I'm pretty bad at math. But anyway, yeah, as the dude above me said, it'll still be stupid expensive.

This a good chair? I've got like 150 Amazon trade in credit, and a new chair's the only thing I really need right now, and I'd rather not spend too much out of my own pocket.

I need a new media holder since my current one is full of games and movies. Can someone recommend something cool, maybe glass or a modern styling?

Thanks for the info guys.

Finally finished with our London City setup. Tabris has been urging me to post pictures, so got around taking some this weekend with some loaner lenses and tripod.

We bought the flat in April 2011 and renovated it fully it through the summer until August. We redid every room, built in more storage, integrated cabling and overall just improved the aesthetics. A pretty stressful process I hope I don't have to repeat any time soon.

Our build philosophy was to create a highly functional space with everything non-essential out of sight, so we can fully immerse on whatever we are doing - gaming, reading, working, watching films. We have maximized storage space and integrated a lot of connectivity and lighting. We also wanted to design a space that feels casual enough to be inviting, rather than overly polished.

Well this sure looks nice, but I don't think it's optimal, from a technical point of view. Your empty walls and the big window will reflect a lot of the sound coming from the speakers, ruining your sound. Here is a nice summary about this topic:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-1tXkiHAH47x/learn/learningcenter/home/speakers_roomacoustics.html

Another point is the distance to your screen. THX recommends a distance of 1,8m to a 52 inch screen to achieve a viewing angle of 36 degrees like in a cinema, a projector may be a better solution for this room (and the white walls are not very good for contrast). Other than that, a really nice place.

I am still a few years out from moving out but once I finish school and do it I want to get 8030'as + 7050b for 7.1 for my TV.

Within the month though I should have 6010a's + 5040a for 5.1 on my PC. I picked up the first piece today so I do not need a receiver or adapters, it was discontinued everywhere and I couldn't find it online but found one used locally. Asus xonar hdav 1.3 deluxe, it sucks that my essence stx can't use the H6 card like the ST can, so now I will have 2 xonar cards in my pc, all other cards like this are only PCI, which my mobo doesnt have.

Quick question for anyone that has their computer hooked up to their tv.

Are there any drawbacks to this type of setup?

If I were to use my computer for the internet, some emailing/searching, and primarily gaming, is there any reason not to have it connected to my tv? Do I need a more powerful pc to do this? In theory I like the idea of a gigantic screen, but the idea of having the keyboard on my lap, and not being sure where I'd place the mouse to use it makes me wonder. I'd assume the lag from wireless keyboard/mouse is pretty nonexistent.

Obviously, I'm not very tech savy, just curious about doing this in the future, as right now I have a dedicated computer desk and monitor.

Desktop? Run a long HDMI cable to the TV from the computer and set the TV up as another monitor. Keep your existing M/KB at your desk and get a wireless setup for the living room. Works fine.

It is a flat in London...a place to be lived in and not exactly a dedicated home theater.

This has been driving me crazy but I've been looking for this furniture piece I saw ages ago in one of these topics. It's fairly popular but the name of it escapes me. Basically a cushioned black seat where there is nothing in it where you can place items inside of it if you wished or contained smaller seats. Anybody have a clue what I'm talking about?

Sounds like an Ottoman?

That's what I was thinking.

Great link, thanks. The space is indeed a bit problematic in terms of acoustics. On the plus side, the sofa is not next to a wall, and I have a rug on the floor. On the minus side, like you point, are the big window and empty walls. Unfortunately they are quite hard to fix - unless I give up and get blinds, which would make it much less nice looking.

Fully agree on screen size, just couldn't afford a new TV yet (this 52"one is from 2006). I will prob get one in February. An 75-80" would be lovely, however I have only seen affordable 65" ones so far. The distance is about 2.5-3m from TV to sofa, the wide angle throws off a bit. I don't think a projector would work, as the space is very bright - there is a similar full wall window on the right tpp

it's not bad at all, most of the time i just sit on the chair as far back as I can so its only a few degrees, i just rotate the chair slightly. on the plus side I might be buying a house soon so I'll be able to have a proper gaming room as opposed to cramming 20+ years of gaming into my bedroom and I'll be able to put out my older consoles

I will change something at my actually gamingsetup.. home cinema 5.1 ist comming.. buying 2 mini-racks.. and red led spots.. sty tuned ;)
