Shu Yoshida: Sony doesn't consider Nintendo competition anywhere except in Japan

Inside Sony, even when they do a business analysis, Nintendo doesn't show up…Not that they're ignoring Nintendo, but that they do not necessarily feel Nintendo is competition because Nintendo is covering a different audience

Except for one market – it's Japan. In Japan Nintendo is hugely strong, and Xbox almost doesn't exist. … it's all about Nintendo versus Sony. So PlayStation people working in Japan see Nintendo clearly as competition, but outside Japan PlayStation people clearly see Xbox as a primary competition."

Cool you see them as competition, now do something that is competitive in japan.

Hint: Raising prices to further tank your console sales in Japan isn't one them.

Nintendo is in a sweet spot. It's competitors ignore them while they do their PVE rotation and break all the industry records.

Sony and Nintendo do seem to have captured vast swathes of the market without stepping on each other's toes.

Each launches their new system while the other is half way through their's.

For me PS5 Pro + Switch 2 is a great combo, best of both worlds 🙂

Don't misinterpret Shu and Sony, Sony PS has big respect to Nintendo but Sony don't consider them as a competition.

I like both, but for me, up to now PS and Nintendo still feel like distinct to each other, a completely different segment.

Yeah I don't understand this part then.....

Let's be real here there is not much competition in Japan, Nintendo already won there.

Especially when Sony mostly focusing on western games.

Well yeah they play all the kiddie games. Americans play games like adults: CoD, Madden, etc…

Doesn't seem like a competition to me but it's nice that Sony think so. In respect of the home country only obviously.

Gamers chasing the newest GTA or COD will never check a Nintendo console first.
Historically that hasn't been the platform to play them.

Switch2 might be on track to change that though..?

Eh....doubt it on GTA to Switch 2. Overall, the amount of overlap of games between Xbox and PS is pretty massive. PS and Switch? Not nearly as much. People buy Switch for Nintendo games.

No it isn't.

Eh....we disagree then

Sales disagree with your statement, assuming they hold.

Obviously yeah since they have to pull millions of PS2 sales out of their ass Brazil to avoid admitting Switch is the best selling system of all time.
Huhhh? What does PS2 have to do with PS5 sales? PS5 has been ahead of Switch in the last year or two.
There's a PS2 with the number on it. It won't go higher than that.

Oh this motherfucker think Switch finished up #1 last gen.
Hint, it doesn't matter if you keep running when entire gen has already finished and someone has walked away with the trophy and started the next race.

Ok....but that has nothing to do with my point.

What is your point?

Massive hardware sales + massive software sales competing for our pocket's money assuredly IS competition against Sony whether they want to admit it or not, worldwide, not just Japan. Sony is virtually nonexistent in Japan, if there's a market where there's no competition its that one, its owned by Nintendo.

Beating Nintendo is not difficult, you just need to break the bond between Nintendo consumers and Nintendo by attacking the supposed quality of Nintendo products with a campaign. Just get this one and everything will fall like a hanafuda castle.

Sony has no interest in Nintendo losing relevance as they are both Japanese companies.

So… They think they are competition for Nintendo in Japan 🤣🤣🤣 this guy is a good comedian.
In the context given, yes. It doesn't mean they are close.

Xbox isn't exactly competition either.

Like Crash Bandicoot harassing an empty Nintendo building?

Point? You made a false statement.
How is something not competition when it's beating the other product?

Am I misunderstanding what you meant or something?

My point is Sony and Nintendo do not compete with each other for the same games. Like Sony said, different audiences.

I guess we've come full circle.

"Xbox leaving means Sony has no competition".... Some of the same posters: "What, Nintendo is your competition everywhere, Sony! Da fuq you talkin' 'bout".

GAF's favorite animal is a chameleon! 🦎

So you are saying that all Sony needs to do is attack Nintendo's weak point for massive damage?

They do though. Sony knows this hence it's big sale during the Switch 2's launch window.
Nintendo undercut PS5's price in Japan with it's Japan only model because of competition with Sony.

Of course Sony won't admit Nintendo is competition and has already been damage controlling what Nintendo has accomplished with Switch 2.

You actually need to have a quality edge to do that, though. If you want to be taken seriously, that is. Whatever Sony brings up, people would just go "LOL Concord" and that'd be that.

Yes, much of Nintendo's success lies in the lack of strong criticism of the company's policies and its games, so people normalize things due to the unique discourse. If the competition shows, for example, that Nintendo's game pricing is not good, this has extremely destructive potential from a business point of view, but this is just a single example; there are a thousand fronts to act on.

Sony had the same Days of Play sales last year. Doesn't mean a thing.
