Is that true RTX HDR for in-game can only be used via Windows 11? If so, I guess I found out why the settings are locked for me.

I really like how normal the characters are now. In the original games it's like they voice acted by aliens pretending to be human.

^ pretty normal question to be asking lol. Though her lack of reaction to a legs-legs attack was odd.

You’re exactly where I’m at 😂

The characters definitely sound more normal than the OG, but there is still that David Lynch weirdness going on to a fucking T.

When it comes to horror and especially psychological horror this already does the whole Lynchian/Twin Peaks vibe better than Alan Wake to me. Deadly Premonition is up for contention.

At least on normal difficulty I feel stacked with bullets and health drinks. Been watching a playthrough of the original version and that too was actually pretty liberal in the way it doled out health and ammo.

Definitely on the GOTY list. Possibly #1. I’m just constantly floored. It’s the pacing that really seals it for me. It’s just so fucking tight. Not one moment wasted.

I keep hearing this and am glad I chose hard. I have died several times. Sometimes I do it on purpose because I used too many healing items to feel comfortable, but I have died many times legit. Ammo is ok, but my healing has been down to 2 and 1 or 1 and 1 since the first big apts zone. I really need a better melee weapon lol

Yeah Silent Hill excels at that. Way creepier and unnerving than Resident Evil which is why it’s always stood next to RE as the kings of survival horror.

Fatal Frame is up there too IMO. Not in a Lynchian way, just straight up creepy. Really good at giving me goosebumps.

I want to live in a world where there's an abundance of health drinks and ammunition lying about.

Resources are quite scarce in hard mode; notably health items. I thank the lord every time I find one.

It feels like the right mode to play imho

Hard is the way to go but melee sucks.

Also one of the hard puzzles is really misleading to the point of contradicting itself so I'm not sure if I trust them going forward.

Played up to the third save point, just after the first encounter, and yes indeed, Bloober do seem to have understood the assignment, don't they?

I gave them a load of shit in the run up to the game's release, but this feels like a totally different developer. Clearly having a good foundation from which to build had greatly helped them.

I like the alterations to the opening, that helps to maintain some tension for those of us that know the original game backwards and forwards. And the performance so far is great. Very smooth and constant 60fps with everything dialled up to maximum in 1440p. The audio is sublimely well done too.

So there is no way to get the Mira the Dog and Robbie the Rabbit masks if you didn't pre-order the deluxe digital? That's so stupid if true for us physical buyers. They should've sold them separate.

Had no intention of buying but a friend in my steam library did so I downloaded it and played up until you meet maria

  1. Atmosphere is great, I do miss the twin peaks style of delivery. New VAs are great, so far, but new Mary is just so off-putting which is weird considering how they delivered everything in the original
  2. Combat is fun, definitely last of us "light" for better or worse. Not sure if I enjoy the sprawling areas for puzzles that were centralized in the original but at this point anyone whos played the game several times can beat it in less than 3 on accident so it just makes sense
  3. Playing on a 4080 + 7600X (Eco Mode) and I have to say maxed out it's not the greatest looking game, you def need DLSS but I'm disappointed with the RT implementation.

I'm ... not feeling the hype.

The game is really good so far, but jesus it's unpolished. To the point where my immersion is broken sometimes.

  • Runs really badly on Quality mode.
  • Reconstruction looks like shit. Tons of artifacts. Leaves blowing in the wind have some huge ghosting effect, for example.
  • Some very noticeable graphical glitches sometimes (white flashes 'cause its loading stuff when you turn the camera being the worst offender)
  • Animations are really bad compared to other AAA games today.
  • Walking is too slow and running is too fast. A middle option would be great.
The content is really good. I've been having a blast. But I cant remember the last time I've paid $70 for such an unpolished product.

I dont regret buying it, at all. Im sure I'll love it in the end. But Bloober is still Bloober. This is not a Witcher 3 moment, imo.

Edit: Oh, I have to praise the audio tho. Its sublime, really. Probably the best audio in a game in a very long time, if not ever.

Questions on the franchise:

I assume SH1-3 are the original team of creators and the peak of the franchise, right?

Is SH3 going to fair well in this day and age to play on say steam deck via emulator? Or is there a better way to play if I only own a pc, ps5, and steam deck? Or should I wait and pray to play sh3 remake? I know sh1 is not going to withstand the test of time.

I went on a full retro marathon last 2 weeks playing through all SH games except SH2, and they work perfectly fine on PC.

You can only legally buy SH4 The Room on GOG, the rest is on abandonware.

For SH3 you need the iso, an .exe file fix and controller fix. The game has aged rather well except for the "cinematic camera" which is somehow the worst in the series, and I regret finding this amazing mod only after I beat it.

SH1 is just beautiful on duckstation. I played it last week first time since I was in high school and it's a great retro ride with all the emulator tweaks like geometry correction.

SH2 for PC is also abandonware and has the incredible fan-made Enhanced edition which I plan to play right after I'm done with NG+ here.

Question:

Aside from the weird as fuck facial design and animations, is everything else left as is/ aka the same as the original?

I can deal with bitches with frumpy ass weird jaw faces as long as it retains SH2 plot/dialogue just with good graphics.
I actually think the Angela design works in its favour. She looks much younger and more ordinary than before - it suits her slightly melodramatic character and the childish fawning for her mother, and offers a neat contrast to Maria, whose more mature and self-asserted.

Honestly, based on comments by studios like RGG, I think Japanese dev teams struggle to have none-hot characters (as publishers believe it'll harm sales), but I think that kind of contrast is an effective narrative tool.

I think her design is great and specially the voiceover acting and delivery is so much more natural and even moving:

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Pyramid Head first boss fight on hard is a fucking trip. The whole section till you get to him is a journey into hell. I haven’t been dragged into hell like this in a video game since Tower of Latria in 2009.
fucking LEGEND post. Latria <333333333333333

Using ray reconstruction, or at least the settings presented everywhere for it, seems to have some weird effects on some parts of the lighting and shadows. I'd leave it off for now until people figure out better settings.

RTX + HDR works fine on Windows 10 for me, just have to enable HDR in display settings before launching the game.

I tried the DLSS 3.5 engine.ini file tweak and had worse performance by ~5fps so am leaving it off for now.

Not sure if someone else responded, but ray-tracing and ghosting fixes are mentioned here-

Someone has made a mod to remove James's ugly shining hair, need to try this when I get home (fucking work)

Oh and heads up, DLSS on pc is broken. It makes shadows in character's faces look pixelated and flickered. TSR fixes this and faces look much better and there is less artefacting when pairing with depth of field.

The only downside of using TSR is that James has ghosting around him so yeah pick your poison but to me DLSS ruins many cutscenes and i have tested it intensively

I really hope that Bloober is working into fixing this and the ghosting because the games is really good looking and it's a shame to have these visual issues

Yeah it's atrocious and really noticeable. That and the ghosting of the leaves, or the fog artifacts and flashes.

Isn't DLSS supposed to be the best upscaler? Why is it so badly implemented here?

meme playthrough with that NG+ weapon on „easy” is just ridiculous. I should be possible to unlock most endings on this save.

I also started playing SH2 enhanced edition, now I’m even more blown away wat a great remake this is.

I was really confused about „glimpses if the past” at first but they are, just as I thought, activity points from the original game. So good

No idea but its really bad. I told Alex from Digital Foundry in Twitter and he acted a bit surprised as if he didn't noticed this which I find weird because he is supposed to catch these issues easily but I have been looking a few youtube playthroughs from the pc version just to check if these issues exist and I saw them clearly repeated in those videos so the problem with this upscaler is real. I love DLSS and I hate when is not implemented correctly

Let's hope for the best, I am sure Bloober Team will realize and fix it

Thanks and yeah it's enabled prior.

Their FAQ said only works on Windows 11 and beyond. Must be BS. Someone on Reddit said they had to remove all of their other display cables in order for the proper signal to hit the TV. I'll keep looking for a solution then.

90 minutes in, just hit Wood Side. In short (so far) this remake is everything I could have ever wanted. Silent Hill - before anything else - is all about atmosphere and it's the biggest reason why I was always cautiously optimistic about Bloober helming the project, every game of theirs I've completed (Observer, Layers of Fear, The Medium) had atmosphere as their strongest trait. Here they were given the blueprint to a classic, all they had to do was execute and make sure the gameplay felt good too.

And boy does it feel *great*, DualSense haptics once again showing how the PS5 controller is arguably the most "next-gen" thing about this gen, seeing health status in the lightbar (green, yellow, orange, red) is another nice touch that frees you from the ugly-as-sin, immersion killing red border, turn that off ASAP. Melee is satisfyingly meaty and I appreciate the visual cue of a stomp to indicate a defeated foe though I always do 3 just for good measure!

The sound design in this game is nothing short of immaculate, the only way to play is with headphones, 3D audio turned on. Akira Yamaoka's sinister, foreboding soundtrack keeping the tension taut as you hear the sounds of abominations scurrying, floors creaking, wind chimes in the gentle breeze, everything all around you enveloping you in this world, it's so fucking good.

Back to it now, I'm sure I will have many thoughts as take this haunted trip down memory lane, might just wait until I'm done my first playthrough though and put it all in one epic post.

Remake’s version of Wood Side is absolutely sublime. One of the best horror levels ever imho, really feels like you are in hell.

Agree with the sound design, it is simply superb

I've eaten a giant plate of crow even before playing the game considering I'm now in the fucking OT all the time for no apparent reason.

Fine. I'll buy it on the weekend.

PS: Seriously though, it's the posters whose opinions I respect in here that are making me do a heel turn. If Blooper really did pull this off to this degree, that's close to Retro doing Metroid Prime levels. The reason I hated on it is especially because I did support them prior and shame on me for buying THREE shitty games by them. I'm now kind of psyched to see them pull themselves out of the bargain bin mire.

Told myself I would save the shotgun for later. That was until I met the nurse.

The Callisto Protocol should have had combat like this. Instead they made some weird-to-dodge system. James is bringing back the head stomp too.

From the unreal engine developer site:

Try drivers first.

If you want the most stable Nvidia drivers that have released this year then try the following:

I'll double check what drivers I'm running when I'm back at my computer but they are definitely one of the older ones.
Updated my motherboard bios last night and played for about 40 minutes with no crashes. Hopefully that was the permanent fix that I needed.
