Silent Hill 2 |OT| You promised you'd take me there again someday...

I was interested in this until I saw some frame graphs on PS5. It appears to run badly in both of its modes. With performance mode dropping below PS5 VRR threshold, whilst taking a significant hit to visuals. And with the quality mode unable to hold 30fps too.

Updated my motherboard bios last night and played for about 40 minutes with no crashes. Hopefully that was the permanent fix that I needed.

In case you're still having issues and need to try some different drivers this is what I'm on:

I just finished the
hospital
and my PS says im only at 50%, so i still have like a good 10 hours left. Doesnt matter, unless it really drops the ball in the last 50%, this will be my favorite survival horror game of all time. What a fucking incredible game. The game is getting scarier too. I already jumped like 3 times today lol

runs fine on gtx 1060 6gb i7 7700HQ laptop, with forced dx12 and FSR3 on quality, 1080p shaders medium other high /med mix. getting about 35-50fps . default fsr1.0 looks so much worse and runs like 15fps slower. on quality fsr .
gameplay pretty intense , very dark rooms untill you get flashlight. smashing things feels very good. better then re2 remake as that became more action
those reflections on puddles as non RT looks so good, crisp and detailed. better then non RT cyberpunk puddle reflections . so really good optimized game on those old GPU's impressive stuff . sure hi end GPU guys have allways complains as for those cards all must be perfect. and on gtx 1060 , FSR3 saves the day , cyberpunk, starfield, horizon or TLOU all those runs fine with FSR3 and looks good too.

After 10 hours that's my opinion, they really did it.
The last time I played Silent Hill 2 was back in 2001 on the PS2. The Resident Evil 2 remake became one of my favorite games, even surpassing the PS1 original. I'm only 30 minutes into the Silent Hill 2 remake, and so far, it's awesome! If what you said is true... HOT DAMN! I'm in for a ride! Can't wait to play more tonight.

That's just my opinion and you know.. there were people who liked Concord. But if you liked RE2 Remake then i think this game isn't going to disappoint you.

I have to update my bios aswell, but i dread having to take pics of all the 3853852748284 settings so i can set them back to how they were before the update (i had my pc build by professionals so i have no idea of what to do with bios settings between ram overclock, enabling rebar and all the shit you do in the bios).

Fuck me :messenger_pensive:

This comment right here is like a complete summary of reasons why I dropped PC gaming and went 100% consoles. lol

I wasn't looking forward to this game but given the high scores I've decided to give it a go. But it's hard to get good fps with my 4070. Anyone with the same GPU can share configs?

I'm about six hours in so far. I'm in the hospital. It's pretty good, but I have a few issues with it, mostly technical:

  • The lighting/shadows look like shit in motion. Incredibly noisy and lacking temporal stability. Impressive in screenshots but that's really it. Ray reconstruction helps in some instances but can hurt in others.
    • This is fixed with the Ultra+ mod
  • The hair rendering is incredibly noisy and downright distracting.
    • This is fixed with the Ultra+ and the Less Shiny Hair mods.
  • Like Hellblade II, this is yet another game that slathers itself in horrific post processing that only serves to reduce image quality. And of course, you have to edit an ini file to get rid of it instead of making it a slider in the settings menu
  • Traversal stutter. Traversal stutter everywhere.
  • Black levels are raised and it seems impossible to get true black during actual gameplay.
    • This is fixed with the Ultra+ mod
  • Noticeable shadow pop-in, especially on smaller geometry.
    • This is fixed with the Ultra+ mod
  • No native DLAA support. Can be added with DLSS Tweaks, though.
  • Cutscenes are 30 fps. Even when "unlocked", the actual animations are still mostly done at 30 so it looks weird
    • The mod to unlock the cutscenes has been updated to give 60 fps animations.
  • The combat just plain sucks and is not worth engaging with. I dropped the difficulty to light just to make it less annoying.
  • I hate this style of camera. It makes the cramped hallways even more difficult to deal with.
EDIT: After finishing the game I updated the above to reflect that many issues can be corrected with mods.

Tbf, i'm an absolute noob, and it's pretty rare that you are forced to upgrade the bios, most people never upgrade their bios.

Most of the gaffers probably know how to update the bios and remember what to change in the settings.

I don't even know what you're talking about and don't want to know. Been PC gaming for decades lol

Same, and this is the first time that i'm "forced" to do something on bios level because intel fucked up.

If you have a 13-14 gen intel cpu you should update your bios aswell dude.

Crap IQ, performance, etc are much better. /s
I've been a PC gamer since early 80's and been playing with consoles more or less since original xbox so I'm quite aware of both platforms' pros and cons, thank you very much.

EDIT: And I've secured my PSPro, so hopefully it'll provide good enough iq/performance for my 83" LG C1

I've got a 4070 and have max settings (I think I may have medium on shaders) at 1440p balanced. 70 to 80 fps most of the time with some drops to 60.

I still think HDR is really fucking dark. I tried 3 different settings and ended up on the default, but when im watching SDR footage of this game, i see a lot more details

It's funny cause I have a friend who went from nothing but PC to being full time console too. He enjoys the simplicity now in his 50s. Like "I'm tired, boss." I did the opposite. Console to PC in my later years. I can't go back. It's like the Matrix in my eyes. Knowing about the red pill makes me unable to return to the simpler life blue pill. I like struggle though. I lift/run 2 hours a day. lol

Ok i'm installing, does anyone has a guide for ultranoobs for the things i have to fix in the game?

I heard enabling ray reconstruction, fixing dlss and some other stuff...

Also, is this true:

The PC version of Silent Hill 2 is perhaps the worst game the editorial team has ever tested in terms of so-called traversal stutters.

I saw rised blacks levels at the default (ingame) gamma settings of 2.35, but at 2.2 the blacks look like true blacks.
