Silent Hill 2 |OT| You promised you'd take me there again someday...

The game really is a bit emotionally and psychologically draining in the best/worst way possible. I was sitting on the edge of my couch the entire time playing yesterday not once sitting back just to relax for a bit. it didn't even occur to me. It's got its claws into me so bad.

I'll be up late again tonight I'm sure of it and if my dreams are fucked again I might have to consider playing in smaller bursts.

Who am I kidding

Fuck short bursts, the game is a perfectly paced masterpiece
I recently replayed SH1 and I play A LOT of Horror games...I can't play these games for longer than short bursts. I'm an avid reader and consumer of surreal art in general so I feel like my brain is tuned to that frequency already so the amount of suggestion SH uses just sets me the fuck off. There are so many small moments where I get full gut-sinking feelings.

Like in SH1 there's the janitor character in the school. The implication combined with the music, the visuals of rust and barbed wire everywhere. I always feel overwhelmed by these games, they're aggressively disturbing imo.

That's how I had to play Silent Hill back in the day. I would do a section and then take a break when I'd reach the next. The break helped me destress.

Yeah the performance mode is pretty shit in this. I just hope the Pro can run this at close to 60 with PSSR and quality settings

The game scales very well on pc rigs so it should definitely get better on pro.

Took me 19 hours to beat.

The game is incredibly polished and incredibly well presented and designed start to finish.

Honestly feels like something out of SIE.

Hard to believe Bloober made this and I'm happy for them.

I literally loved everything so as a SH2 OG I'll just list the few cons I had that probably only apply to me:

- Lighting was straight up just terrible in some areas, substituting Silent Hills' interior design for just darkness made the game less scary IMO.

- The Radio Quiz show was bland.

- The end of Labyrinth having tacked on action segments felt unnecessary and out of place.

- No Pianissimo Epilogue results screen.

wow labirynth was one of my favorite areas, loved it. I have no memory of how it worked in the original but I'm hearing those mid to late chapters are very different in the Remake, especially the prison

Labyrinth is still fantastic don't get me wrong, there was just an interstitial toward the end which felt clearly out of place and turned it too much into an action game for me.

Also Remake improves on the level structure and puzzles of each area IMO whilst remaining faithful and still feeling just like I'm in the OG. It's amazing how that somehow works.

You need to solve the coin puzzle in the lobby area. It's in the room behind the front desk where the save spot is.

Solve the puzzle and
you get the room 201 key. the three coins are all you need to complete it. just follow the riddle above the machine.

There were
5 indentions, so I thought I was missing two.
Thanks!

There's no bounce light around the windows.

RT certainly makes a huge difference in this game, as almost everything is lit by indirect lighting, so you need more precise RT to illuminate such dimly lit scenes. Without RT, some scenes just look too dark and it affects the gameplay.

Ok I have everything on hard and can’t figure out the moth/butterfly puzzle. I really can’t find the connection between the butterflies and the combination lock. Any very vague tips?

Look at the number of those icons not the number of moth types. Each moon crescent moth for example has a certain amount per each wing. Add them all up.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Just reached hospital (hard difficulty, 8 hours in).

This game is an absolute masterpiece. There was only one cutscene that really bothered me, and it was an important one that I think the Bloobs fucked up with - but everything else is... Wow.

Oh yeah turn that blood border off, so obnoxious. Play with a PS5 controller and its light will show your health level.

Also am I missing something when it comes to finding health items? I get it’s survival horror and they’re supposed to be rare but goddamn, I’ve been running on fumes in the apartments and every little hit I take feels like I should go back to my last save and try again
This was me on my first run. I actually started over once I got to the top of Woodside Apartments, as I felt like I'd made a lot of dumb mistakes (had about five bullets and one health drink). Finished Woodside the second time with 22 bullets, 7 health drinks and 3 syringes.

I think the trick is to kneecap enemies - one good shot stuns them for a a quick follow-up melee kill.

More generally, I'm loving the game. It's fantastically well designed, looks great and oozes atmosphere. Game is a masterclass in leading a player naturally through a complex maze without ever throwing annoying markers or prompt dialogue at you - somehow, you never feel like you got a clue where you're going but rarely end up lost.

So which cutscene was it?

IMO they've made things more obvious(aka less subtle) in a lot of scenes.

Just left the apartments

Had a feeling I was going to face off against “him” but didn’t expect it to be a countdown/test of avoidance, even though I still shot at him a dozen times

I didn’t think I’d be so relieved to walk back out into the desolate foggy streets🥲

I must have played the OG like 5 times, and man I find this remake tense as fuck.

Pretty surprised by the combat. Its basic, but very efficient in conveying the feeling of desperate fighting against miserable atrocities, and is still leaving you enough room to be tactical (and you must absolutely play this way on hard - which is pretty quite hard actually). I love it

Question:

Aside from the weird as fuck facial design and animations, is everything else left as is/ aka the same as the original?

I can deal with bitches with frumpy ass weird jaw faces as long as it retains SH2 plot/dialogue just with good graphics.

Questions on the franchise:

I assume SH1-3 are the original team of creators and the peak of the franchise, right?

Is SH3 going to fair well in this day and age to play on say steam deck via emulator? Or is there a better way to play if I only own a pc, ps5, and steam deck? Or should I wait and pray to play sh3 remake? I know sh1 is not going to withstand the test of time.

Inside the Apartments were dark as fuck. Scary 👀

HDR still locked to off for me. I was advised to unplug all other monitors from the PC when using my OLED. Anyone else with the issue?

Edit: could be the game optimizer settings. Will try that. It's at 120fps

At least on normal difficulty I feel stacked with bullets and health drinks. Been watching a playthrough of the original version and that too was actually pretty liberal in the way it doled out health and ammo.

Definitely on the GOTY list. Possibly #1. I’m just constantly floored. It’s the pacing that really seals it for me. It’s just so fucking tight. Not one moment wasted.

Out of any game I want on gfn, this would be it. 😒

From everything I am seeing this could be one of the best horror games ever made. Could easily see this be my goty. This game could make the pro worth it.
