Silent Hill 2 |OT| You promised you'd take me there again someday...

Im really curious about that. I still have the PS3 version but i gotta be honest, i never really enjoyed the game. The script was really off putting to me and im by no means a prude. Been meaning to revisit it to see if my opinion would change. Glad its being rereleased all the same though. If the game isnt censored, people are going to be lose their minds over it, lol.

Yeah the vulgarity is definitely pretty high up on the totem pole, but its so purposely over the top that I can't be offended or put off by it. It was one of my favorite games from that gen for sure.

Im also biased since I love anything Suda related :messenger_grinning_smiling:

This game is just SO good.....i'm having a blast. The difficulty too (im on standard) is just perfect, and they always have a great amount of ammo and health laying around if you look for it. Fighting the various enemies is just great too since you can literally dodge pretty much anything once you figure out the timing, and then counter with your pipe or a gun shot.

I hope they do remake the 1st SH too!

Nice. I'll probably finish it this weekend.

Off topic but man, this has been such a fantastic Hallowern season for me. Weather has been fantastic, SH2 remake is a joy to play, been revisiting other SH games and titles in the Fatal Frame series, watching horror movies, seeing the fall colors with leisure drives and hikes. So damn cozy! :messenger_sunglasses:
On that note I’m still trying to play Downpour. Combat is just rotten but then I get constant glitches with parts of geometry and character models „flickering”… not sure if I can do this

It’s good you’re telling me this. Sometimes I’m close to paying 60 EUR for a used PS3 copy on eBay just to see how bad/good it is.

Downpour is truly awful. I still want to master the mechanics and find something good with it but man, every time I try I am reminded why I dislike the game so much. The combat is awful, and the enemies are plenty; cop cars filled with trash mobs. Its just so dumb to me.

Sameday I will conquer it.

Here's a weird thing to notice:

I like that the game contains zero of gaming's recent obsession with "swear words = mature". Nobody curses and it makes the game feel more reserved and restrained compared to most modern "mature" gaming. I curse all the time so nothing against it but it struck me last night again and its another element that feels of another era and works in its favor imo

I bought it at launch, traded it in a few years later and i bought another copy earlier this year, japanese copy cause its cheaper. Still has english though.

it just isnt fun to play. I was really hoping my opinion would change but nah, and anyone who reads my posts should be familiar with how forgiving i can be with games, lol. Hell, im the guy that unironically defends Homecoming.

Off topic but i got the SH HD Collection the other day, morbid curiosity.

I actually think SH2 is fine for what it is, at least so far, and the inclusion of the OG vocal track is nice. Clearly the worst way to play the game but not as bad as I expected.

SH3 though, I figured that version would be more polished but 5 mins into the game, when Heather goes into the alley after climbing out of the bathroom window. Her run animation just stops, she just slides in this weird pose through the alley. Lol. So bizarre. This collection really is a complete mess.

Bruh, youre just gonna conpletely ignore the psychological masterpiece SHATTERED MEMORIES. Have you forgotten the warning at the beginning of the game?? "THIS GAME PLAYS YOU....JUST AS MUCH AS YOU PLAY IT"

Yes, im being facetious, I hate that game, lol.
I haven't played sh games after the room, and i don't remember shit from that one.

Don't do it man. Not only is the game bad, it runs like total shit on PS3. But if you have a good enough PC then try it on RPCS3, it helps a lot with the image and runs pretty well at 60fps.

Homecoming and Origins are pretty worth playing. Homecoming in particular plays a lot like this new remake, it has excellent music and solid atmospheric town design. Many people didn't like the story because it kind of copied SH2 in some parts(Pyramid Head) but I myself enjoyed it. Homecoming is in fact the reason I went back and finished Silent Hill 2 on PS2 and then played the rest of them one after the other liking the original the best and Shattered Memories the least.

I'm not really a retrogamer, i would probably hate the clunkiness and how dated they feel.

Homecoming while not as polished plays similar to SH2:R and SH2,3 and 4 recently got third person camera mods to make them feel a bit more modern. They do need a bit of tweaking and patch installings though so I would understand that being a barrier for new players.

If anything you can watch some no commentary playthrough of them if you want to at least experience their stories.

This channel is pretty good and has them all:

No, the thing in the cage that try to kiss me with his vagina (?).
Such a strange ass bossfight :lollipop_grinning_sweat:

Btw, i'm trying to use the "shoot the knee and then go melee" on the nurses but the number of projectiles for the stun is completely random, sometimes they go down woth 2 hits, sometimes they don't go down even wih 4 bullets.

I really dislike how many elements of the combat feel random, from enemy health to stuff like this.

That's a mouth!

GMG has this for $54. Which, apparently for me was enough of a discount to forgo my self imposed “you bought too much Steam shit and gotta wait to buy more” game fasting.

She’s running pretty good on FSR quality. Most settings on High. Not getting a perfect 60, but damn close. Probably gonna look for an FSR3 injector. If anyone knows of one, lemme know. On my setup I’ve actually had better luck with XeSS. 🤷‍♂️

Either way, about to descend these stairs and mope around this town.

EDIT: Fuck it I’m hitting FB marketplace and trying to get something tonight 👀

never played the originals because i thought the enemies looked dumb
love the atmosphere so far, and yeah the enemies look dumb

sound is interesting
feels like there's a lot of... volume in the world, as in a lot of space between me and world objects
bit surreal
adds to the atmosphere

love how casual the protag is about walking into some random city and meleeing everything to death
like it just comes with the territory

It took me 25 hours to complete the remake, and I knew the original very well, so I knew what to do. It seems to me that you just rushed through the game.

I was new to the game and beat it in 14. I don't think I rushed at all, I explored every room and, for what's it's worth, I was absolutely stacked with ammo and heals. I wonder what I did so differently.

Shattered memories was real good. The story is at least as good as SH2, maybe even better. The game also understood that silent Hill is scariest when you’re not killing the enemies. SH2 remake teaches you how to kill with a very first enemy and doesn’t let you run away.
Shattered memories is not even the same developers. Anything past 4 should be ignored as it’s just random developers, passing around the silent Hill title.

That's quite the combination, are you waiting for a newer generation of Nvidia cards or you just not interested in upgrading? If you don't mind sharing of course.

I was waiting to see what the 5xxx brings. The darn thing just runs games so well at 1920x1080 that I haven't been forced to. Since my post I figured out how to use FSR3.1 and Frame Generation and now it's running in the 90s. 3 series was unobtanium. I thought the 4 series had an absolutely offensive amount of vRAM, so when it came out that the 5xxx series was going to have the same amounts I gave up. Buying something used.

I just played SH2 on an emulator with a community patch/overhaul in the last year, so the memories are fresh for me. The remake is pretty great. Better than I expected at least. No clue when it turned into this considering how some of the trailers looked. Kudos to Bloob, even if there is still some jank. The thick, supple oppressiveness wears on you the longer you play. First 30 minutes you've got pep in your step and you're moving confidently, but after enough time in the fog, it wears on you. Creates a looming dread. The fights are violent and unpredictable. Enough of them in a short period of time can really produce some shell shock. That last part of the first map area really got my heart pumping. They did a great job capturing something very close to the mood of Silent Hill 2. That is probably the part they captured the best actually and it can take the rest of the pieces a long way. Look forward to playing this the next couple weekends for spooky season.

Took my time with it but finally done with my first playthrough. Yes I have an awful sense of direction.

Excellent job by Bloober Team on this remake, hopefully they get to make one for Silent Hill 1 too.

Oh no it actually tracks how many times you've checked the map. I genuinely fear it's gonna be in the thousands for me when I've done with it lol. I'm constantly checking the map after every corner even when I've no need to, just out of habit.

i guess if you played more games you’d probably see how not complex it is.
I said complex compared to the other silent hills, it's not too hard to understand buddy.

Open a poll on gaf and ask what between the first 3 sh games has the most complex/tought provoking plot and watch the results, again, it's not rocket science.

So I finally got out of the hospital. Liked what they've done with the place. But man, the combat is getting tiresome. Gonna try and finish it this weekend. Fuck do I hate 30fps, this will be the last game I play in 'quality' mode on PS/Xbox.

Bloober needs to make a game out of the cancelled Silent Hill 5 concept. From what i’ve read, they even had a story for it. Or, a direct sequel starring adult laura but make sure its not some shit like the medium

I miss the lack of swearing in most things. I feel the same with random nudity
There is very much a pre and post Game of Thrones. I'm a straight guy that swears from time to time but it's just weird half the time.

I also had the GTX1080 paired with the 7800X3D. To be honest most games from my steam library run quite well (1440p 60fps at high or console like settings, FSR2 was helpful in some games too). However, the most demanding games (like the TLOU remake, Alan Wake 2, or UE5 games) run poorly at 1440p even with FSR2. Also some games wasnt loading textures correctly due to 8GB VRAM (forspoken).

I wanted to play these demanding games at 60fps, so I decided to buy a used 2080ti because it could make my wait for the RTX50 series a lot easier. Unfortunately, the RTX2080ti I bought did not work properly (core frequency was stuck at 1440MHz and boost clocks did not work at all), so I had to return it. But even at 1350MHz that 2080ti blow away my old GTX1080 in these demading games. For example "in the last of us remake" at 1440p with FSR2 I had like 35-45fps on the GTX1080, but on the 2080ti I had 80fps at 1440p DLSSQuality instead of FSR2 quality. This game was way more enjoyable and smooth. so it was hard to go back to the old GTX1080 when I realized what I would be missing. I returned the RTX2080ti and decided not to wait for the RTX50 series anymore. I bought the RTX4080S in June and I have no regreats.

IDK which RTX50 series card you want to buy, but even the RTX5060 will blow that old GTX1080 out of the water when it comes to gaming performance.

Here's my comparsion from the witcher 3. On the GTX1080 I had around 30fps at 1440p with SSR at high in exactly the same place (the rest of the details set to uber settings), and 70fps with SSR. On the RTX2080ti I had 70fps but with SSR at high settings instead of low On the RTX4080S I now get 149fps with "SSR high", and 233fps at SSR low settings. Even with ray tracing I now get much higher fps than on my old GTX1080 running the game at SSR low settings.

I probably spent 2 hours adjusting graphics settings because I wasnt happy with my experience (stutters). I also spent a lot of time trying to find all the supplies because I was trying to kill every single monster.

Finished the game. I’m amazed. Bloober created the best horror game ever and yes I think it’s better than the original. What is crazy that it’s not only amazing because not many expected it to be this good, but it’s objectively phenomenal and is a GOTY contender and for me one of the best games ever. It’s so obvious that they treated it with respect and did their best in everything. That the visuals are on AAA level is one thing but the sound design is out of this world. Ever since I started playing videogames I have never been amazed so much by the sound of any game. It’s completely on a different level than anything else IMO. The voice actors were phenomenal as well and the cutscenes gave me that same strange dreamy feeling like the original, which was not easy I’m sure. And they added a lot to it and I loved every second. So yeah, I think nothing comes close to this game in its genre and it will be a very long time, if ever, that something will top it. It’s phenomenal.

There is no canon ending as this is a complete story so there isn't a reason for one to be a canon but some say it's the one you got as there are references in SH4 about James heading to Silent Hill and never returning. Maybe the movie will settle it.

The walk from the hospital to the prison was really good. They absolutely nailed the darkness. Now on to my favorite part... When I first played SH2 back on the OG Xbox this is where I quit, couldnt take it anymore. Didnt finish till 15 years later with the HD collection.

About 9 hours in, still in Brookhaven (after
Flesh Lip
).

I really like the majority of the game. Maybe it gets worse later on, but so far I'm not complaining about how much combat there is in the game. I would say it's even fun to spot hiding enemies and be the first one to attack them. Or be cocky and attack a single enemy and instantly regret it after being surprised by their colleagues. ;)

My only complaint are the puzzles (I have them on normal difficulty). With this game you instantly get stuck in an area until you finish a puzzle (and literally stuck in a room with one of them). I didn't feel like that in Resi games, felt like there was always more than one puzzle to tackle or some additional exploration available while trying to figure out a solution. They're also very uneven, with some of them I didn't know where to start, while some other ones pretty much give you a complete solution written on a note.

I need horror game for this October and I decided give SH2 Remake a chance. I was very critical on direction the game was going with but after playing this game on hard for good 7 hours and reaching the hospital.

I have to say this game is MUCH better than I thought, there are clear cues they get from RE2Remake but despite of that this game is very much feel like SH game especially when comes exploration and encounters.

What I really like even after killing the enemy their bodies never disappear so you always have this uneasy feeling they might comeback any time which increase tension without needing cheap loud noice or flashing jump scare in your face which Alan Wake 2 loves to do.

Henry states to a picture given to him by Frank Sunderland, "I got this photo from Sunderland, the superintendent. I heard his son and daughter-in-law disappeared in Silent Hill a few years back...". Masahiro Ito has also stated that his favorite is the water ending but all 4 endings are official canon.

I started the game even though I was going to wait for a Pro patch. Is no one else bothered by the jelly branches on the trees and the ghosting in leaves and other debris as they fly around? Quality mode doesn’t fix it. The image overall is pretty shimmery in both modes

I know I’m being a little nit-picky but many games don’t have this issue. Is it UE5?

There’s a trigger warning as soon as you fire it up. It warns about the themes and has a QR code to scan for “help.”
